We Have A Winner!!!

Del Reddick, part time homeless guy, wins the title of Arcata's Village Idiot.

Why this guy gets front page coverage in the Times Standard is beyond me. Seemed like pretty much a non- story. The writer says Reddick's message is "something insightful". Maybe I missed it but, from the looks of the signs he's displaying, all he has to say are the same tired old anti Bush tirades. I'm no fan of Bush but I don't find signs with anti Bush slogans insightful.

Oh well, to paraphrase Lenny Bruce, "Everyone will get their fifteen minutes of fame...", even village idiots.

Not Lenny Bruce -- Warhol!

This is one of those rare cases where it's the mainstream media factchecking the blogger.

Damn, you caught me again!

Actually, I kinda wondered if I was quoting the right guy. I almost wrote "whoever it was that said...", but decided not to for some reason.

Thanks for the correction.

Yes, but those 15 minutes of fame can be a real problem. Look what happend to Andy Warhol.

village idiot?
I don't know this Del guy, but the article didn't mention anything about him driving a HumVee - or the civilian version. You know what I'm talking about, right? Those big tank-like vehicles that some folks drive around town - to the tune of less than ten miles per gallon - even though American boys and girls are killing and dying in Iraq and elsewhere to keep the prices of gasoline low.
In fact, looking at the article that your post linked to, seems like Del reads some good books. He also at seems to be a nice enough guy (from the article's depiction, noting of course the lack of credibility of the Times-Slander)and has enough sense to see through the federal propaganda line of crap.
Seems to me like there are much bigger idiots in our town than Del.

Hey plazoid, shut the hell up.

Plazoid,

Pay no attention to anonymous. There is far too little levity in the world. We need your input in order to understand the level of Marxist bullshit at work in the Arcata Soviet that can concern itself with what type of vehicles are driven and what MPG they obtain.

Fun fact leonidas, the Hybrids cause more damage to the Earth then those silly Hummers. I mean, what are we going to do with 1500 pounds of toxic waste per car when the battery packs need replacing in the next 4-5 years? And when you factor in how much more junk gets tossed into the air from making said Hybrids...well, let's just say, they aren't as clean as people think they are. If you really want a car that gets good MPG, look into a CRX HF model. Sure they may be older, but can't beat 50 MPG on a all gas engine!

I enjoy a laugh as much as the next person, I just don't find the jokes plazoid is saying to be funny, and then, some people, really think that he isn't joking, and that makes me sad.

Hey anonymous,

You got a source to go with your claims?

leonidas,

You can make fun of the "Marxist[s]" in Arcata (often rightly so) but they have better intentions than the capitalist corporations. America's addiction to automobiles has intense political and ecological consequences. The mpg's of our cars does matter. Global warming is actually happening, and car exhaust is almost certainly contributing. Our dependence on oil, and the corporate addiction to huge profits causes really bad federal policy. Reducing our consumption of fossil fuels would be wise policy, and yet we encourage more use. Here's a partial quote from this website

"...a small business owner...was entitled to deduct...almost all the $111,000 cost of the Hummer H1 in the purchase year."

Why would a lawyer or a real estate agent need a Hummer? Why did the federal government allow the cost to be written off? (the loophole was recently closed) Do you think oil and auto lobbies had anything to do with it?

Because it has a gross vehicle weight rating over 8500 lbs, the US government does not require it to meet federal fuel efficiency regulations. Hummer isn't even required to publish its fuel economy (owners indicate that they get around 10 mpg for normal use).

Why would somebody want to drive an 8500 pound vehicle around town?

Usually I don't, but I'm going to have to agree with Plazoid this time. The humvee owner is a bigger idiot that Del.

Do you see any connection between federal policy and oil profits? Do you see any connection between oil profits and the war in Iraq? Or are you to busy paying attention to the trivial power of the Arcata City Council to ponder these more important questions?

I encourage you to take a look at what United Fruit and the Dulles brothers did in 1954 in Guatemala. and let me know if you see any parallels to what's happening in Iraq? And do you see any connection between 10 mpg and Iraq?

Fred, sorry to rant on so long. I'll try to keep my lengthy displays of my own idiocy to my own blog, and keep my comments on your site shorter and relevant to your posts.

oh, where you all talking about me when you where talking about "Marxists"? Well, Mark's a nice guy and all, but as far as this whole religion thing goes...

to "anonymous"
fun fact: why don't you go drive your car home and watch some teevee.

I am aware of "shut the hell up," but it's always nice to be reminded.

You can make fun of the "Marxist[s]" in Arcata (often rightly so) but they have better intentions than the capitalist corporations.

Please specify events wherein “capitalist corporations” have forced collectivization at gunpoint and purged, executed and enslaved political opponents, all with the best of intentions.

The mpg's of our cars does matter.

Of course it does, but to whom? Did you cut the econ. 101 lecture on supply and demand? Is Jeff to decide if Joe has the choice of paying more for fuel or buying an extra sixpack, both items being a scarce commodity?

Global warming is actually happening, and car exhaust is almost certainly contributing.

Did car exhaust contribute to the previous global warming events such as the climate in Greenland that supported vineyards during the 9th century? Is it car exhausts that are causing the polar ice caps on Mars to recede due to global warming there? Does the Sun have a significant influence?

Reducing our consumption of fossil fuels would be wise policy, and yet we encourage more use.

Does the government (we) encourage more use by restricting supply thus driving up the price? The environazis have consistently fought the production of petroleum products without ever being able to demonstrate a severe negative environmental impact. By fighting the construction of pipe lines they were even heavily responsible for the Exxon Valdez tragedy. Where is the oily goo on the Gulf of Mexico beaches after several major hurricanes have impacted several hundred oil platforms

Why would a lawyer or a real estate agent need a Hummer?

Who is to decide what a lawyer, real estate agent or anyone else needs? Leonidas has no business deciding what jeff needs.

Why would somebody want to drive an 8500 pound vehicle around town?

Leonidas does not know the answer to the question of what somebody wants. That is for them to determine.

Usually I don't, but I'm going to have to agree with Plazoid this time. The humvee owner is a bigger idiot that Del.

Having conversed with both Mr. Reddick and several Humvee owners, Leonidas has to differ.

[A]re you to [sic] busy paying attention to the trivial power of the Arcata City Council to ponder these more important questions?

One of the favorite slogans of those who would take away my liberty seems to be: “think globally, act locally”.

I encourage you to take a look at what United Fruit and the Dulles brothers did in 1954 in Guatemala.

A discussion of History 135 and Poli Sci 204 is beyond the scope of this thread but Fred has my permission to supply you with my email address as I find the good natured exchange of ideas amusing

Leonidas,

I agree this is the wrong place for such discussion. I just noticed that my comment apologizing to Fred is blank, just my name is there. You're certainly welcome to contact me through my blogs:

My Rant and Rave Page

or just click on my name in my comments to get to my blogger profile.

I don't know what's going on if the comments aren't being posted. Probably just blogspot spazzing out. I had some problems posting comments on other blogs yesterday.

Fred, I'm guessing it was the ID 10 T error :)

Probably what I did was not enter the correct letters from the picture and just assumed that it had posted. And the thing about just my name...that was just me misreading the screen.

At 8:24 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Yep. I've had problems with that word verification thing. Sometimes it's hard to tell what the letters are. I've gotten them wrong three times in a row before. Now I always wait and make sure it shows up posted.

One good thing; at least you don't lose the message you post if you fail the word test and have to type it all over again.

Yeah, this blogspot service works incredibly well. And it's free. How is that possible?

Why...it's the wonderful world of capitalism, Jeff.
