Left Wing Radio

I don't know how anyone could say that National Public Radio is unbiased journalism.

I listened to NPR for an hour or more while driving back up here from the Bay Area yesterday. The entire subject matter discussed during that time was hard core lefty stuff. I've heard it's like that all the time, but my experience is limited so I suppose I shouldn't make a judgement on just a few hours listening time.

Hey, I might even have agreed with some of what was being said, although it's hard to remember just what all the subjects covered were. Of course, they did have an interview with Cindy "ate up" Sheehan, who I detest, but other than that it was an interesting listen.

I just get a little fed up hearing from lefties who claim NPR "tells it the way it is...". Well, they may tell you what you want to hear, but please don't tell me they're non- biased.
**********
Along the same line, I happened to be listening to KMUD while driving up through the Avenue of the Giants yesterday. Isn't KMUD an NPR station, or maybe that was the same channel? Hard for me to tell since, as reception came and went, I kept hitting the Seek button and just listened to whatever came along that I could receive well enough to understand.

Anyway, what grabbed my attention was an announcement that, coming up, was coverage of the Measure T issue, among other things. I had to listen to that.

I was surprised to hear them give some pretty good time to the NO side of Measure T. Most of that was just recorded segments of Chris Crawford's speech before the Republican Central Committee a few days ago. Not bad.

Next came, what seemed to be, a pre- recorded interview with Kaitlin Sopoci- Belknap of Democracy Unlimited and thus YES on T fame.

Nothing much from her we haven't heard before. She was just plugging her position. I did take exception to her complaining about not being invited to present her side of the Measure T issue to the Republican Central Committee. She made some comment about how the presentation was so one sided.

Well, it might have been, Kaitlin, but to call the various YES on T meetings your side has had, with a number of YES on T folks as speakers, forums, doesn't give you much credibility on the issue of promoting even handed presentations. But, to Kaitlin's credit, I was surprised when her interview came to a close.

She urged listeners to educate themselves on the issue (I hate it when either side of an issue uses the word educate, although I'm not completely sure she used that term). She suggested listeners visit both the YES On T web site, then much to my surprise, suggested they also visit the NO On T web site.

Not bad. All in all I thought it was a fairly even handed presentation of both sides.
**********
Next, on KMUD, was coverage of a candidate forum between District Attorney Candidates, Paul Gallegos and Worth Dikeman. I didn't catch exactly when this forum took place. Pretty fair coverage of each candidate, I suppose. The problem I found was they spent a substantial amount of time interviewing audience members.

The question they asked of whether the forum changed their views on the candidates, or their decision of who they'd be voting for is a very legitimate one. In fact, the question of whether candidate forums actually change anyone's mind is an interesting one, indeed. They rarely change mine.

What concerned me was that the only audience members who gave their preference of whom they'd be voting for, said they had planned on voting for Gallegos and still felt that way. I found that rather odd. Nope, sorry Gallegos supporters. Everyone you know might well be voting for Gallegos, but I personally don't know anyone that's voting for him.

So, the D.A. forums seemed a bit tweaked, but I'll be fair and say that might have been more by accident than by design. The Measure T segment seemed ok to me. Still, overall I don't see how anyone can call NPR unbiased.

NPR is corporate-funded media propaganda. The only people who think NPR is "lefty" are right-wingers who actually believe Fox News is "fair and balanced."

I have heard people say that right wing talk radio is mean and vicious. After listening to KMUD, and right wing talk radio, I have to say that right wing talk radio doesn't hold a candle to KMUD when it comes to vicious rhetoric.

KMUD Fair and Balanced? Not even close.

As one of KMUD's tokens to balanced radio, I would have to agree with anonymous. KMUD is really the propaganda organ of protest activists in Humboldt County. I don't think they know how to do a politically balanced show anymore. The thought is so strange to them as they believe everybody who listens is just like them, anti-corporate, anti-Palco, anti-this, anti-that. KMUD is Humboldt County's primary protest station and as such it violates FCC rules all the time but no one cares. I've voiced my protest of KMUD slanted politics but as one person I haven't made a dent in their program policy.

Steve Lewis,

of the utterly famous "Steve Lewis Show", on KMUD sometimes, here and there.

Fred: You were listening to the evening KMUD news, which often airs both sides of a story. As you said, you "thought it was a fairly even handed presentation of both sides (of the Measure T issue)." There are political opinion shows, which are not "balanced" because they are opinion shows. Steve Lewis's occasional road show on KMUD is not balanced, and that's his right.

KMUD is not part of NPR, and its surprising you don't know more about it. KMUD is a commercial-free station supported by the listeners. What a concept.

Two nights ago, KMUD aired a live 1.5 hour debate between Gallegos and Dikeman (hardly a one-sided event). The interviews you heard were conducted after the debate to get people's reactions.

KMUD is pro-community, pro-civil rights, and pro-independent media. KMUD supports lots of other things too. It humorous that Steve Lewis calls KMUD "anti-this, anti-that" since every edtorial he has ever written is anti-EPIC, anti-Watershed Council, and anti-activist.

Are we talking about the same radio network? The NPR I listened to yesterday was NOTHING but left wing, and I'm one who thinks FOX News is right wing.

11:50 wrote: "KMUD is not part of NPR, and its surprising you don't know more about it.".

I've listened to KMUD on occasion. I'll have to admit that I'd never paid much attention to what they were part of, or how they were financed.

I believe they were either doing, or had just finished, some fund raising drive, at least from what they were saying yesterday. It reminded me of the KEET TV fundraisers. Maybe that's why I assumed they were part of NPR?

At 12:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Because KMUD is commercial-free, they hold bi-annual fundraisers. Yesterday was the final day of the spring fund drive.

I wish I could say that I listen to public radio, unfortunately my 4 children keep me too busy. When we're in the car, I'm lucky if I get to listen to anything but hard rock radio. If not that, it's arguing. Silence is a rare commodity for me. I find it interesting to hear what other folks say about it.

KMUD's news is totally slanted thanks to Estelle Fennel, she puts on Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap like every week and rarely give any rebuttal time to the people she attacks for the crime of not supporting Measure T, like Chris Crawford, Nancy Flemming, Greg Allen, Rob Arkley, the Times-Standard and numerous local employers. Estelle Fennel never did consult with any legitimate constitutional law experts on the flaws in Measure T and she won't because she made her mind up before it even got on the ballot.

Anyone who heard the so-called debate on Measure T saw how the hosts constantly defended it and consistently grilled only the anti-T side. At least the Gallegos-Dikeman affair was moderated by the League of Women Voters.

KHSU has the same problem, what with Democrat shill Rob Amerman hosting a Measure T debate while listed on the votelocalcontrolfreak website as an endorser.

Name one radio station,tv station, or news pulication in the world that is unbiased or has no political slant at all.

I can't think of any. All of them have their own agendas to push, be it left wing or right wing. It is what it is.

KMUD is pro-ACTIVIST community. If you're an activist and want to protest something, you go to KMUD. I've listened to KMUD on and off, mostly off, ever since it's inception as a "community radio". It is only a "community" radio station if your politics are pro-Left, anti-this, anti-that, as the pro-Left reactionaries are. When was the last time you heard a really pro-community, meaning ALL members of the community, program on KMUD? KMUD attracts people who share it's political philosophy and that is all KMUD listeners. You don't know how hard it was for me to get any show on KMUD before they finally allowed me to be the token, ah, er, mainstream, liberal but not radical rep on KMUD.

Manys the time I've wondered how on earth KMUD is allowed to be a supposed "community" radio station with KMUD's so very obvious political slanting in favor of radical activists dominating almost all community issues. KMUD is not a balanced radio station and doesn't seem to care to be.

What does that sign in front of KMUD say? KMUD RAD..and that's exactly what the station is. It is not a community radio station for mainstream members of the SoHum community. Were that it were, then maybe some real social change might happen since protest activists haven't a clue how to go about building community for everyone, only on how to tear community apart with constant actions pitting leftist activists against this or that corporate target of the week.

I'd say at least KEET 13 never puts a local political debate on TV unless a nonpartisan, respected group like the League is the moderator. Even those Democrat worshipers at KHUM give every local candidate equal time.

While Channel 12 does have that LOCO Solutions propaganda under the cutesy "Seeking Solutions" (produced by the same woman who spits out Rob Amerman's crap for KHSU every week), the debates they hosted for North Humboldt School Board last year and Arcata Council the year before were fair.

Certainly wasn't DA.

For example, based upon the documents’ first-quarter figures for 2006, there were four cases accepted by the DA’s Office — gleaned from 40 CAST interviews. Of those four cases, one was filed, two cases were rejected and one case has been received and was pending a filing decision at the end of the first quarter."

Gallegos says "… Some people, and this may sound sick to you or I, but some people actually molest out of different feelings, some times out of feelings of love.”

"Yeah Rose, we know that. The thing is - we don't care."

"We don't care."

That about sums up why Progressives are such hypocrites when they talk of representing the "community". They don't care about mainstream people's lives here. They only care about their political agenda aimed at destroying the corporate economic base in Humboldt County and replacing it with "progressive" boutique businesses that provide about zero possibilities for clerk worker advancement unless you're part of the owner family.

I'm sorry to point out the historical record of "Progressives" or really, anti-corporate capitalist Lefties, but it is atrocious. They haven't a clue how to build economic infrastructure that is self-sustaining because they always put politics first. Look at the failure of the Soviet Union and how China is switching to capitalism in order to create an economically successful China.

When you advocate overthrow of an existing economic system, you darn well better make sure you have a working alternative, which we don't because most all social change energy is sucked up in reactionary "Progressive" protest actions. Without the replacement available, protest activism is socially irresponsible--tearing down the existing support system with nothing to replace it with.

Community comes first, not politics. That's why I'm a communitarian activist.

At 11:53 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Talk about hypocrisy. Steven Lewis only wants a community that agrees with him 100% of the time. The majority of his public comments are spent complaining about and falsely lambasting other members of the Humboldt community while insisting he is a "communitarian activist." Whining and false accusations do not “build” anything, but only serve to fan the flames of division.

At 12:27 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

False accusations, like fraud. perhaps?

At least Lewis allows comments on his blog, since KMUD, Arcata Eye/Captain Buhne, and the Redwood Peace for Just Us Center are all about censorship. I usually don't agree with what Stephen says, but at least I defend his right to say it, which is more than I can say for the Democracy Unlimited gang and their anti-free speech Measure T.

At 1:07 PM, Blogger Steve Lewis said...

In my defense I will say that I try my best to put my money where my mouth is.

When I criticize environmentalists for diverting environmental protection energy away from the major culprits, too many homesteaders homesteading without virtually any environmental regulations, and towards the lesser culprit, Palco, the political target corporation, I have backed up my opinions by working for, well, now it's up to four solid years, on an alternative ownership and management plan for Palco, one that not only provides protection of every last remaining old growth tree on that land but also provides for restitution of Native American ownership in cooperative partnership with Palco worker ownership, i.e., "communitarian" solution vs. the political solution of enviros out to destroy Palco's economic viability, a tactic that doesn't save trees and most definitely harms the economic support of hundreds of Humboldt citizens forced to be pawns of enviro/Maxxam politics.

When I complain about my Democratic Party being commandeered by the special interest anti-Palco, anti-corporate coalition group known as "Progressives", I work for the best Democrat candidate despite his lack of endorsement by the Progressive-held HCDCC, which anyone can see by their candidate selection and campaign causes are virtually identical to Humboldt Greens which is the political center of Progressives here in Humboldt County.

dear 1:33 pm - sorry buddy, but KMUDS actions speak louder than your words.

As a liberal democrat I abhor censorship in any form. KMUD is ALL ABOUT CENSORSHIP. Estelle Fennel is so biased it hurts my ears - Her incessant whining about measure T, Gallegos, Salzman, etc. etc. is old and boring. She has no clue about what real journalism is about. Instead she grandstands for her obvious biases and then dares to call herself liberal.

Liberal my eye - that is offensive to true liberals.

As is measure T and Gallegos.

As a liberal I care about people who are vulnerable in our community. Gallegos' no longer prosecutes child abusers. His own statistics in the Eureka Reporter show that the cases are down to just one.

If KMUD is not about censorship - why don't they put this out there

At 9:45 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh come on, if they tell that story it will be to say that it is all just about the lame-ducking of Paul, that none of it is true, that he is the best DA in the state, Estelle will have Paul on the line spouting more platitudes, there will be no corresponding call from the other side, and she will coo that Paul is the most accessible politician in the county. It's revolting. But it's obvious what matters more.

At 12:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gosh darnit, why can't every media outlet in the county be like the Eureka Reporter? It's just senseless to go against what the Arkleys want. They are obviously the better educated, qualified and monied to make decisions for the people of this county. Such contrary opinions, like those expressed on KMUD, should not be tolerated.

At 2:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The ER seems to lean a bit to the left to me. More right than the TS and certainly more than KMUD, but I'd hardly call them right wing. Journalists by their nature tend to lean left. Why is that?

At 2:14 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

One would hope that it is due to a predilection for freedom of speech and the press rather than the dictatorial policies of the extreme right wing. Did you see the report that neo-con government is tracking the phone calls made by journalists, supposedly to stop leaks? Outrageous.

But really, the press's lack of diligence in the lead up to the illegal war in Iraq, and the pandering to Team Bush makes me sick. This is why so many people loved Stephen Colbert's speech at the annual press corps dinner. The media needs to get their noses rubbed in the quagmire they helped create.

At 9:59 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The journalists (right or left) here take everything gallegos says at face value and never ask any questions. They don't seem to mind that he lies to them and their journalistic hairs should, but don't, stand up on the back of their necks when he gives them a wordy but meaningless answer. Analyze his statements, and there is no there there, just air and fluff. Those aren't fine robes. The guys is stark nekked, and it ain't a pretty sight. It should offend every fiber of your being. Why doesn't it?

This is truly sickening.

At 10:31 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, you people are truly sickening. The election cycle appears to be the time you sickos pant and drool to the thought of children getting molested. Otherwise it is a non-issue to you. That's why child sexual abuse is such an epidemic.

The vast majority of children (and women) are raped by people they know, not some boogie man in the bushes. So many people are afraid to deal with that uncomfortable fact. Why is it that so many fathers, uncles and brothers sexually abuse the children in their family? That is a far more difficult question to face. So instead, you use the election to make disgusting accusations against Paul Gallegos. Shame on you.

I would much rather have a DA that understands the truth of the situation than a DA who panders to the cops. Too many cops fail to investigate reports of abuse because they are abusers themselves.

10:31 said "I would rather have a DA that understands the truth of the situation..." What truth is that? I've only heard glittering generalities in the face of very disturbing statistics about child abuse cases. He's happy to cite statistics, but he has yet to give a plaustible explanation about the child abuse statistics.

As for "pandering to the cops," Gallegos has a badge just like they do, and just like the Attorney General, who would be charged with investigating Gallegos, if he broke the law.
Yet Gallegos has no problem seeking the Attorny General's endorsement.

Gallegos's campaign manager and friend, Richard Salzman, was invetigated, and Gallegos declared a conflict. Couldn't he do the same thing if an officer was charged with wrongdoing? How are the officers different than other endorsers who might find themselves involved in a criminal case?

"Too many cops fail to investigate child abuse because they are the abusers themselves"---this statement is completely uncredible. Cite a specific case where a child has been abused, and the officer did not take a report because he/she was an abuser. It's easy to make such generalized statements, as Gallegos does, with nothing concrete to back it up.

Unprecedented Million Dollar Settlement:
Sheriff Held Accountable in Domestic Violence Homicide of Maria Teresa Macias

On June 18, 2002, in the first ever monetary award by law enforcement for their failure to protect a domestic violence victim leading up to her homicide, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department agreed to pay a million dollar settlement in the landmark federal civil rights lawsuit of “Maria Teresa Macias vs. Sonoma County Sheriff Mark Ihde.”

The announcement came mid-trial at the close of dramatic testimony by Sara Rubio Hernandez detailing more than 20 attempts by her daughter, Maria Teresa Macias, to get help with her violent estranged husband, Avelino.

Hernandez outlined her daughter's repeated reports to the Sheriff Dept. of Avelino’s multiple felony crimes including his sexual assaults of Teresa and her children, his constant obsessive stalking, repeated threats to kill and restraining order violations. The Sheriff's Department never once arrested or cited Avelino Macias. After deputies ignored more than twenty reports in just the last few months of her life, Avelino fatally shot Teresa, then shot and seriously wounded her mother, Sara, on April 15, 1996.
