Times- Standard Endorses Gallegos

In yet another offbeat argument in one of the current local political issues of the day, the Times- Standard steps up to the plate and endorses Paul Gallegos for District Attorney.

Sorry, Gallegos fans, poor reasoning and thus poor endorsement the way I read it.

They basically say Dikeman would make a fine D.A. but instead endorse Gallegos because he's cool (my words). Hey, he surfs, and the young folks like him. Need anything else be said?

It would seem to me the main issue here is how the D.A.'s is being run but the T-S doesn't seem much concerned with that.

They suggest Gallegos' first term had too many distractions for him to be effective and that he should get four more years to show his stuff.

Ok. It seems to me, though, when you have a D.A. that seems to be universally disliked amongst anyone involved in the criminal justice system up here, we have a problem. Let's hope four more years, assuming he wins, puts the D.A.'s office back in order. I won't be holding my breath.

Four more years with Gallegos, and the District Attorney's Office will be dismantled entirely. I shudder to think about that effect on this community.

Gallegos is immature, unknowledgeable, irresponsible, and cavalier about his role.

Unfortunately, people often will go for image over substance. If they do in this case, the voters will get the government that they deserve.

Besides all the law enforcement unions not supporting Gallegos, I noticed that his own employees do not endorse him. These same employees do not jump up and down stating that the criticisms made by Dikeman are wrong and that Gallegos is a great manager.

When Terry Farmer ran, all of his employees supported his bid for DA.

You really do have to wonder when everybody who works with Gallegos is either supporting Dikeman or not saying a word.

The Times-Standard is banking on allying itself with the Progressives in an effort to distinguish itself from the Eureka Reporter which most assume is a spokes-vehicle for the Republican Right which the paper isn't as any who read it regularly can verify.

Look at today's front-page article in the T-S about Union Pacific. Now why would they dig up that info on U.P's current success story if not to play up to Progressives?

And, no one is noting the environmental protection irony of Progressive anti-Arkley Balloon Tract development groups hammering for U.P. to pay for clean-up to virgin conditions, something not asked for before in major brownfield clean-ups, that trying to force U.P. to clean up will actually be helping to defeat the less environmentally destructive railroad useage and encourage more trucking and more pollution.

Exactly. Something's not quite right. Anybody who's involved in the criminal justice system up here seems to dislike Gallegos, and we're not just talking law enforcement, as in police.

Even the probation officers came out against Gallegos and I happen to know some of them (at least if they still work there) and some are what I would consider hard to the left type of people.

As an aside, I wonder about that retired Sheriff's lieutenant- the one who gave Salzman permission to use his name for a letter. I wonder who he's backing?

Of course, he's not in the business, anymore, so not sure that would be the same as saying he's law enforcement. But I would think if he's friends with Salzman, he must be a pretty left leaning guy, to say the least.

I agree with Steven - the TS is trying to align themselves with the so called "progressives" because they have lost the mainstream because of their biases.

That is unfortunate. Unless of course they want to go out of business.

Worth is going to win because people will get out to vote in this one.

All I know is that the EPD SWAT team will do absolutely anything to get Dikeman elected. No way these guys want to have to answer to an independent DA.

But it is not just SWAT, it is everyone in power who likes that if they or their wife (are you reading this Worth? How about Roger?) are pulled over for a DUI, that they will be driven home and never charged. That is one of the clearest and most common examples of who the "good ol boys" network takes care of its own.
Not being charged for a wrongful death would be another.

Yea, a lot of people "inside" the system have worked very hard to reject the will-of-the-voters, twice now. These people have little respect for democracy and think it should be up to them alone and not the majority of those who bother to vote.

Of course most cops assume that everyone they arrest is guilty and should be put in jail. For them, the whole "system" with the innocent until proved guilty crap is a big nuisance. They wouldn't have arrested the suspect if they didn't believe him or her to be guilty, so why shouldn't they feel this way. Luckily that is not the way it works in this country, well, it wasn't before Bush took office.

The Times-Standard has no credibility now.

This is the guy who:
hired Tim Stoen
drafted a complaint in the PL suit that promptly got tossed out before trial.
went after a political foe, Debbie August, only to have the judge throw it out.
went surfing during work hours and lied about it.
fired a highly praised prosecutor who went after molesters
hired a person who's website before joining the DA's office was: www.yougofree.com.
let a molester off and then tried to blame one of his employees.
has had an mass exodus of experienced prosecutors leaving the office.
is not supported by anyone in law enforcement.
is known as a no show to department head meetings.
meets with protesters instead of victims.

Unbelievable.

Dear 1:56 pm - Are you high on something? What the hell does the Moore shooting have to do with the Times Standard and this blog.

You sound like that deranged lunatic Salzman - do you know him?

Why don't you guys quit making the Moore thing political. Take a hint idiot - every other DA in the state and throughout the country works with the police and seek their endorsements at election time. You are a moron if you think differently. Gallegos can't get supported by those who work day by day with him because he is incompetent and the office is in chaos. Nothing that the TS says to the contrary will change that.

Be careful Richard - Go get your own blog.

Paul didn't see the need to distance himself from that one.

In case you missed it in the debate, the only person in Humboldt County found guilty of racial bias in jury selection (a Wheeler Motion) is Paul Gallegos.

Paul Gallegos takes credit for singlehandedly reducing violent crime.

So, in the wake of five murders, two rape cases, a stabbing, and a drive by shooting in five months...who should that be attributable to?

I think if Paul Gallegos is going to take credit for what he claims is a reduced crime rate, then he needs to step up and take credit for the rash of violent crime recently.

Only seems fair.

The office has endured a much more devastating loss that goes far beyond a mere reduction in the size of

Deputy DAs. The resignations of several of the most skilled and experienced prosecutors, and the
outright dismissal of another, has robbed the department of resources that realistically cannot be replaced.

The Heartlands Project, currently staffed by two Native Americans and myself, is an economic development project benefiting Native Americans in our area.

This isn't any new stunt to thwart criticism of Dikeman but a fact that started almost a year ago. Seems to me there would be conflict aplenty in the Dikeman household if the words of Elli Bowman, herself not a Bear River tribal member, not even Native American, but a white woman married to the present Bear River Tribal Chairperson who's son was convicted of murder by D.D.A. Worth Dikeman.

This is her revenge, either instigated by pro-Gallegos people or on her own initiative to hurt Worth's political ability to remove Paul Gallegos from office.

Or, the higher crime rate could have to do with the fact that so many attorneys who were with the District Attorney's Office have left.

Even four of Gallegos own hires (not "Terry Farmer holdovers") have left or been let go. Several lasted less than a year.

There has been a brain drain at the DA's Office with Gallegos at the helm.

With very few experienced DA's, serious cases are handled by green attorneys who can't secure the best outcome for the case or the community.

I calls 'em as I seethe 'em.

I am a Democrat, for the Demos, for the people of Humboldt County, all of them, mainstream too, not just liberal-Left. Too often the Humboldt Left, the Progressives, create social division where there none should be, e.g., pitting counterculture values against mainstream ones, creating a social war situation in which one side must lose in order for the other to win.

Not my way of doing social change. If it hurts Humboldt working families it isn't social progress at all and unfortunately, that mostly what the Progressive's political agenda does, hurt Humboldt worker's livelihoods and therefore, their lives. Jobs lost with nothing to replace them, no real economic alternatives created because Progressives suck up all the available social change energy in protest actions, i.e. reactionary actions.

Progressives have yet to learn their lesson from the history of the fall of militant socialist republics, e.g., never learning to build solid social/economic infrastructure instead of siphoning the social change energy into a fruitless war with capitalists.

Communitarian activism vs. protest activism. That's what I am about. But this really is Fred's blog.

Who is Stephen Lewis? Well......

May 1, 2003 North Coast Journal

From SoHum to the Holy Land: A spiritual journey

by ANDREW EDWARDS

Standing on the stone steps leading up to the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, surrounded by a throng of singing, palm-frond-waving Palestinian Christians, long-time Humboldt County resident Stephen Lewis was in ecstasy.

Tears were streaming down his cheeks as he brandished "pax-calibur" -- a sword turned peace symbol -- in time to the music, overwhelmed.

"I was near epiphany," Lewis recalled, speaking from his home in Rio Dell. "It was the highest moment in my life and I will treasure it forever."

For him the scene was the culmination of a 14-year "vision quest" that he believes will help bring peace to the Middle East.

It all started back in 1988 when Lewis was visiting his dying father. Depressed, he occupied himself by reading romance novels that featured the crusades of Louis VII of France. From the book, he got the idea of buying a sword to "visualize empowerment" for himself.

He ordered nothing less than a full-size replica of what 1,000 years ago was the ultimate weapon: Excalibur, named for the famed sword of the legendary King Arthur. It arrived by mail on his birthday, Feb. 11, 1989. As soon as he took it from its box, Lewis, a Gnostic Christian, knew it was no ordinary blade.

"When I got the sword in my hand I got this vision to do all these rituals with the sword to sanctify it in our local waters," he said. "Sort of the opposite of forging a sword in fire."

The ceremonies, consisting of dipping the sword in the water and saying prayers over it, were to be performed on seasonal turning points, the solstices and equinoxes, and include women as well as men to give the sword "feminine energies."

The first baptism took place on the March 21, 1989, the spring equinox, at dawn near Richardson Grove. The second was performed by Lewis's friend Susan at the Redwood Monastery along the Mattole River on the summer solstice in that same year; the third, on the autumnal equinox, by his friend Bridgett in front of the naval station at Centerville beach south of Ferndale.

"I was supposed to do the fourth in the Jordan in the winter of that year," Lewis said, referring to the sacred Israeli waterway, not the considerably less lauded Jordan Creek near Pepperwood. "I was also miraculously supposed to get the money [to travel there]. And I didn't."

He was also tied up in his role in the local activist community. Lewis was one of the organizers of the famous Redwood Summer of 1990, but after an Earth First! action that he felt violated their non-violence code he abandoned the project.

Disillusioned, he did the environmentalist equivalent of selling his soul when he went to work for the Pacific Lumber Co. as their liaison with the Garberville-based Environmental Protection Information Center. In 1995, he left that job to work for the Bear River tribe in Rohnerville, which was attempting to hold a lottery to buy the Headwaters forest. He became so consumed with that issue that he decided to do the fourth ritual there, in the midst of the old-growth, in the winter of `95.

Still, he kept waiting for the money he would need to take his trip to the Holy Land. Events kept getting in the way. Two small inheritances were wiped out when Lewis totalled his car and then lost his apartment. Twice, while working in "the underground economy," Lewis raised significant sums only to loan them away. He even tried gambling, once losing over $800.

But this March, he decided to try one last time. He played $75 on an internet casino all the way up to $1,300 and immediately bought a ticket for a six-day, there-and-back dash to Israel at Easter time.

"I count that to God's providence," Lewis said. "Because I'm not a gambler and when I do gamble I usually lose."

But there was still the problem of taking the sword with him.

The final stage of the plan, after baptism in the Jordan, had always been to turn turn the sword into a plowshare, as described in the Bible in the second chapter of Isaiah. But Lewis had learned a few years back that Israeli customs officials wouldn't let a sword into the country. So with his trip looming, he had a local metalsmith reshape the bottom half of the blade into the peace symbol; it was then mounted on a chunk of polished redwood burl. No longer a weapon -- and therefore no longer unacceptable to Israeli customs -- it was now "pax-calibur."

He flew into Tel Aviv, arriving on April 18, Good Friday. He had arranged to stay with an Israeli peace activist named Hagit Ra'anaan. The next day they both drove to the Jordan to complete the ceremony, 14 years after his original vision. [above photo: Stephen Lewis holds paxcalibur aloft standing in the Jordan River]

Afterwards, he and Hagit discussed where he could store it so that one day, perhaps, a Palestinian-Israeli peace group might come along and turn it into a plowshare. A church seemed appropriate and Ra'anaan knew a Catholic priest at St. Stephen's in Nazareth, so off they went.

The priest, or Abbuna, as Lewis called him, was impressed when Lewis related his story and presented the transfigured sword. So impressed, in fact, that he took pax-calibur and invited Lewis back for the Easter celebration the next day.

That morning Lewis took the bus to Tel Aviv, riding through across the Holy Land next to a nervous Filipino woman, who worried about suicide bombers.

St. Stephen's is a small, opulently decorated church in a shabby, Arab neighborhood of Nazareth. As he came through the door he was "propelled" through the crowded interior up to the front, where Abbuna was delivering the service.

At the end, the parishioners filed out, picking up palm fronds and olive branches from a pile near the door to wave as they proceeded down the street. At the bottom of the stack was pax-calibur. Lewis picked it up, and along with the father led the noisy march down the street accompanied by drums and bugle blasts as the Muslims in houses above the street showered them in flower petals and candy.

Nobody questioned why he, a middle-aged American, was there, or what he was holding.

"It just speaks for itself," Lewis said. "I didn't have to say a word."

The march ended on the steps of the basilica, and when Abbuna explained its significance and the crowd cheered, Lewis wept. He flew home two days later.

Lewis said he hoped that in some small way his visit and pax-calibur would improve the chances for peace. But he said the impression he got from peace activists was one of despair at even the possibility of an end to hostilities.

"They've given up on the peace process," Lewis said. "They don't think they can do anything until the Israeli people themselves wake up to the horror of too many deaths."

At 11:50 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I bet it took a lot of guts for them to do it, but they are at least protected by AFSCME. Still the NCJ portrayed them as fearing reprisal. What an ungodly way to have to work. And to think - the nice progressive TS editors think that this is a "progressive" way to run that office.

TS - this stinks.

At 3:35 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The NCJ writes:

What happens, according to the first staff member quoted above, is that long-term members of the clerical staff end up guiding the new recruits in their transformation from law-school students to prosecutors.

"Clerical is not supposed to train the attorneys, but that's what happens," the staff member said. "The vets, they're in the courtrooms -- they're busy up to here."

Underlying the poor organization and management of the office, they say, is the feeling of job insecurity felt by the deputy prosecutors. Gallegos, in his initial run for the office, had pledged to institute civil service protections for deputy prosecutors, so that they could not be fired unless the boss could show good cause. He abandoned that pledge shortly after taking office. Now, according to staff members interviewed, deputies feel they have to keep their mouth shut and their heads down if they want to keep their jobs -- no protests about working conditions, or about the priorities of the office (which one staff member described as "Just get something" -- just get some sort of penalty in plea-bargain arrangements, so long as it goes down as a win).

Another staff member interviewed said that the patience and good will of the office as a whole was just about worn out.

"We're still giving him everything we can, but it doesn't feel like a two-way street," the staff member said. All staff members interviewed were certain that despite Gallegos' statements to the contrary, the overwhelming majority of the office -- from the lowest file clerk all the way on up -- supported Dikeman.

Oh Yeah - this is running the office ok? I think not T-S.

Then Sims writes:

Gallegos, 44, is handsome, well-dressed and well-spoken. Unlike his opponent, he is not a man of few words -- though he is famous for the long, awkward pauses that sometimes punctuate his conversations, he nearly always emerges from them with a decently formed sentence.

Man - thats a hell of a thing. The guy can emerge with a decently formed sentence. WOW

Actually - OUCH!

At 7:01 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You call this a decently formed sentence?

“One is that I do everything to make people happy which means I don’t stand for anything except for just something,” he said. “The other is I stand for something and I try to be a leader and take some people, a group of people, a community someplace and I say guess what folks, this is who I am. I stand for your beliefs. We share these beliefs or we don’t. You get the option to judge that. This is who I am and I am committed to leading us this place, wherever it is...."

That's why they always have Sterling Nichols speak for him. She's a little brighter.

Would you hire Gallegos to work for you?

They don't "always have Sterling Nichols speak for him." In fact she seems to have been pretty low-profile during this campaign. But despite this, the Dikeman camp finds it necessary to call her "sleazy."

Gee, Worth, so glad you are running a "clean campaign." Liar.

let's see $10,000 from Bear River, the woman in front of the courthouse spouting Salzman's lies is wearing a Bear River jacket, and married to the Bear River casino guy, yeah, I think Dikeman called it like it is.

Oh, you mean when Dikeman said Native Americans were criminals who molest children?

it will be a good day when salzman is run out of town on a rail

the kind of divisive politics he brought with him is getting really old and tiresome

There is no rail to be ran out on! Duh!

you can't compare Salzman to Arkley. Salzman owns nothing, has no family, no vested interest in the community except perpetrating his agenda, by hook or by crook, and that includes trying to paint Arkley as the anti-christ. what did Salzman do that go him on Arkley's bad side? This is like a movie/DVD with the option of choosing multiple endings, if he hadn't pissed Arkley of, would he be campaigning FOR Marina Center and against Measure T?

10:38 - are there laws against casinos getting involved in politics? a tribe is a separate nation unto themselves, they don't have to, well, what, follow our laws...

It's funny that you channel your embarrassment over statement made by Dikeman by attacking Salzman.

what's funny is gallegos can't run on his record so he has resorted to making up lies and twisting the truth.

it's not so funny that he recruited a murderer's mother to do the dirty work (the murderer of a native american, no less), while he collects $10,000 from the tribe - i guess you think it is ok if a member of one tribe murders a member of another tribe - or is Bowman's son even a native american?

it's despicable.

the bear river tribe ought to be ashamed to be being used by such a craven politician.

it's so slazman - chompers cook, a fake judge, using a guy in uniform, fake letters to the editor, every thing a lie, and now this.

i guess it is ok with you because the end justifies the means.

it's like the old adage of the medical student who cheats to get good grades - and you know it, and then you end up about to be operated on by him - do you feel good?

Conspiracy theories abound. No one is astute enough be offended by what they see and hear; they have to approached by some dang Gallegos supporter before they voice their opinion.
