Best Campaigner of the Season

That title goes to Frank Jager, our very own County Coroner. No mudslinging, no misleading statements, no bombarding of one ad after another all over TV and radio. If only all candidates followed his example. The Eureka Reporter gave him this much deserved interview, I suppose, because he deserves it. Good luck on Tuesday Frank!

He was unopposed! As was Gary Philp and Carolyn Crnich. Maybe a few others.

That's not fair. You know from the NoT campaign you have to pay to get your message out.

I'd vote for Geist. No negative ads, against 3 opponents.

If you read the letter in the Eureka Reporter from the Orange County DDA who happens to be the Orange County DAs wife - praising Paul and saying that their CAST unit only has one prosecutor - I suggest you look into that DA and his lovely wife... no wonder he likes Paul...

Missing Wives, Lousy Lies & Mob Ties
Exhaustive grand-jury investigation confirms DA corruption
http://www.ocweekly.com/features/features/missing-wives-lousy-lies-mob-ties/21742/

On June 26, the Orange County grand jury rocked the local legal establishment when it declared that Rackauckas routinely abuses his awesome prosecutorial powers to protect friends and punish perceived enemies. According to the grand jury’s fact-filled, 100-page report, "Office of the District Attorney: An in-depth investigation," the DA is Nixonian in the darkest sense of the word: paranoid, petty, partisan, secretive, retaliatory and arrogant. And though this was a civil proceding, it’s easy to conclude that the jury’s findings demand a criminal investigation.

To those who read the Weekly, that description is hardly news. We’ve chronicled Rackauckas’ numerous ethical lapses since he took office four years ago. What’s impressive is that the grand jury—historically a panel of 19, mostly lethargic citizens who avoid the county’s uglier controversies—had the courage to investigate the DA and then report its disturbing findings.

http://www.ocweekly.com/news/news/das-wife-missing/21824/

On March 5, while Orange County District Attorney Anthony "Tony" Rackauckas celebrated his overwhelming reelection at the Sutton Place Hotel in Newport Beach, observers noticed his wife, Kay, was nowhere to be found. Her absence, explained as a need to stay home with a sick baby, still registered as an oddity.

In fact, by then, Kay Rackauckas—a deputy DA in her husband’s controversy-plagued office—had already been absent for months. She still hasn’t reported to work, and colleagues can’t agree where she’s supposed to be.

Kay Rackauckas’ mysterious absence from the DA’s office comes at a convenient time for her and her husband. For the past six months, the Orange County grand jury—acting in concert with state Attorney General Bill Lockyer—has investigated what sources familiar with the investigation call "possible felonies" concerning Tony Rackauckas’ past four years in the DA’s office.

Neither the grand jury nor the attorney general’s office will officially comment on the direction of the probe or even whether it exists. But sources familiar with the investigation say the DA’s top officials, including Rackauckas himself, testified last month. The Republican DA also retained as his counsel prominent Democrat Tom Umberg. Umberg, a Clinton administration official, has no criminal-defense experience but is tight with Lockyer, a fellow Democrat.

Those same sources say Kay Rackauckas’ missing-in-action status coincides with the grand jury’s wish to make her testify.

"She has been subpoenaed but hasn’t appeared before the panel," said a source. "She’s MIA, and you’re not going to find her until after the grand jury disbands."... and there's more

Will this ever end?

I don't believe Gallegos has aired any negative ads, unless I missed them. Will you vote for him?

Looks like someone beat me to it - now that I am reading comments on the other posts, Fred.

Amazing amazing amazing.

Tim Stoen, Norm Vroman and now this guy "Tony" Rackauckas - Richard Salzman

The company you keep, Paul... the lies that masquerade as spin.

Let's find out just how many child abuse prosecutors are in Orange County - and whether Kay Rackauckas really wrote that letter or just signed her name to it.

Eric at 3:55 - whaaaaa

Guess you didn't pick up the Eureka Reporter or the Times Standard today, sunday and saturday. I'd darn say the ads were more than negative. They were uniquely Salzman, negative and sleazy.

And the radio ad that I heard this morning on 100.3 is as bad.

Sorry Eric - but your boy is about as negative as they come. No vote for him from me. I'm with
Worth.

Which ads? None of the ads I've seen have even mentioned Dikeman.

Then again, I don't watch a whole lot of TV, nor do I listen to much commercial radio.

I did hear an ad in which the ABA ethical standard for prosecutor independence was read, and I suppose that could be interpreted as an indirect swipe at Dikeman.

Maybe you can describe one of his negative ads to me.

At 4:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok - how about the one that looks like the Dikeman Ad that has the horrible picture of Worth on it that says that the election is all about the recall and its all about palco and has nothing to do with Paul's record.

Its about as negative as they get Eric.

Paul's whole campaign has been negative Eric.

At 4:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bit - bite me baby. You are low class for attacking someone like Worth on a personal level.

And because I am not going to lower myself to your very low level, I won't make any cracks about your boys mug either

At 4:59 PM, Blogger Eric V. Kirk said...

anon - 4:46 - haven't seen it, but it sounds negative from your description.

rose - I referenced your piece, and your blog, on my own blog. I regard it as kind of a typical ad hominum attack, but there's nothing coming from the Dikeman campaign about Rackauckas’ op-ed. It's all too late to have any impact obviously, but a word of advice, you might at least slip in a little subtantive criticism of the piece.

At 5:10 PM, Blogger Eric V. Kirk said...

As for Paul's "whole campaign" being "negative" - please. Check the homepages of each candidate's website. On Paul's, you have to dig to find criticism of Dikeman. On Dikeman's, you have to dig to find praise of Dikeman. It's all about Paul.

That's why Dikeman will probably lose tomorrow.

At 5:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

trouble is eric, Paul's record is a disaster. Any criticism of Paul's record is viewed as negative by you.

Pau;'s record is his problem and the truth hurts.

At 5:42 PM, Blogger Eric V. Kirk said...

Yes, criticism is negative, whether true or false. But unfortunately for Dikeman, that's all he has to offer. He offers no vision of leadership, but rather simply promises to be a good beaurocrat. That might have sold well in Humboldt a decade ago, but it's a different county now.

At 6:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

well, eric, what happens when more people are fired or quit?

we can already see what happens when the DA can't bring himself to work with law enforcement, because in schizephrenic mind, he sees himself as separate.

we can already see what happens when he can't bring himself to work at all - that's why things are falling apart, eric

nice rhetoric, though, you're a good torch bearer for your boy, so sincere.

At 7:39 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It seems to me that an elected official such as a District Attorney should be able to count on his staff to support him, not undermine his authority and stab him in the back every chance they get. If they can't support him, and they don't have the good grace to quit, he shouldn't waste any time giving them the boot because the office isn't going to run efficiently, and that is a disservice to the community.

I don't understand why Gallegos didn't give Dikeman the heave-ho years ago, and from what I've seen I don't have any problem with Jackson's firing (whatever the reason may have been). There are plenty of experienced attorneys who would leave the hell of LA, Orange County, etc. in a nanosecond to work in the DA's office up here.

"well, eric, what happens when more people are fired or quit?"

Well, generally speaking, you hire replacements. Or do you think there are no lawyers on the planet qualified to prosecute cases other than Alison Jackson and Worth Dikeman?

I doubt Dikeman will be in the office much longer. Not after this campaign.

I oppose Measure T, but as a Libertarian I found the cereal ad annoying as hell. It smacks of the "we'll tell you what's good for you" mentality that is really at the core of what all these bleeding-heart liberals are about.

On the bright side, Gallegos is going down tomorrow!

At 12:14 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah, Paul's done such a good job hiring people so far - stoen, yougofree.com schwartz, yeah the orange coutny lawyers are dying to come up here and work for another guy who the grnad jury has found big problems with.

all this nonsensical rhetoric, false facades, no basis in reality...

Back to the subject of the recent "copycat" negative ad from the Gallegos camp . . . Memo to Richard Salzman and Alison Sterling Nichols: Next time, try to spell correctly--ARKLEY was misspelled on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Sloppiness makes a statement. This is the second time I've spotted a spelling error in your ads, plus there was a grammatical error when Paul speaks of "A district attorney" (singular) then uses the plural pronoun "their". Remind me never to hire your ad people. On top of that, your ads didn't SAY anything. But it doesn't matter now. Worth delivered the knock-out blows in the print ad department (I hardly ever have the TV on). WOW!!

At 4:42 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Once he's cleaned house?" Who's going to do the work? Empty offices? Mr. Gallegos has driven excellent people away from the office--talk to some of the former deputies yourself and get the facts. This has an impact on Humboldt County and our crime victims. The good, hardworking, experienced people have not been replaced, and the brunt of the work is now being supported by about four deputies.

anon 7:41 - he ran a very successful private practive before he was first elected. You can't do that without a work ethic, nor without skills.

As to people leaving because of the "anti-business climate," businesses have been threatening to do that in San Francisco for decades now. Yet for every business that leaves, ten more want in. Property prices haven't dropped since Gallegos came to office.

Or that the serial murderer who walked into the police with a womans severed breast from her dead body is held accountable. Or that creeps that break into little old ladies homes in the middle of the night and rape them are held accountable. Or that people that torture, beat women and then kidnap them by throwing them into the trunk and dumping them are held accountable. That makes us all safer you idiot. So Bit,

Under your theory, when a patient needs brain surgery, they should pick the surgeon with no experience, instead of the surgeon who's done the necessary surgery hundreds of times, as the surgeon with 30 years of experience stayed too long and should have left for "personal growth" just when they were beginning to get a little expertise.

With others like you running around, I can only hope that Darwin was right because the gene pool is obviously very shallow.
