Grow and Eat Locally

Thanks to Eric for reminding me of the Redwood Times web site. I stopped by there this morning and found this article of interest.

Neat idea, I suppose; Growing all the food we need right here in Humboldt. Might or might not be a worthy goal. I'm not sure but it's hard to tell if Ms Ornelas finds the thought of exporting foodstuffs offensive. Kind of reads that way.

With a last name like that, she might well be opposed to exporting as then farming becomes more akin to industry than some nice down- home, back to the earth experience and we certainly want as little industry in this county as possible, don't we?

Neat idea. We can all go back to living like the local tribes did. They didn't have the wheel or draft animals. We could also abandon firearms, outboard motors and nylon fish nets. Incidentally, petroleum began to replace whale oil lamps in the mid 19th century. The petroleum industry has been supplying fuel and lubricants for a lot longer than 70 years (try 145). The U.S. is the ONLY nation that has placed a substantial portion of its petroleum reserves off limits and prohibited the construction of new refining capabilities with environazi regulations. Don't like to look at that ugly oil field machinery? No problem. Welcome to the wonderful world of flies circling the horse poop in the streets. This woman has obviously never visited the real Cuba.

You both are obviously reading way too much into the idea of increasing our self sufficiency with regards to food production. And you also don't know what Mrs. Ornelas thinks about industry or oil production so it's probably best not to put words into other people’s mouths lest they put words into yours...

ΛΕΟΝΙΔΑΣ has no problem with those who choose to "return to nature". The rub comes when these folks act to force their values on the rest of us. As a result of adopting her favored policies of artificially restricting efficient energy production: ..." our modern lifestyle will crash. But I see this as an exciting economic opportunity.”

Mrs Ornelas states: "Oil has only been part of our economy for the past 70 years or so. Prior to that, there were no oil products...". This is absolute nonsense as has been pointed out.

The Native people of this area, she stated: "lived [in squalor] on locally produced foodstuffs like salmon, deer, acorns, fruits and bulbs." They had no citrus, tropical fruits, sugar or other food products found in markets thanks to efficient transportation.

With regard to Cuba, Ornelas states: "They reacted by returning to pre-oil technology like hand threshing machines, use of horses and oxen, and integrating farming with animals that produce food and manure.." Also tons of food rot in the fields for lack of transport and the Cubans spend many hours in long queues with ration books in hand.

Ornelas and many in the audience aver that "growing food needs to be part of everyone’s life". Tell that to the butcher the baker and the candelstick maker.

No words were "put into" Ornelas' mouth.

Hence why so many people call the "progressives" regressives.

Anon 12:47: ΛΕΟΝΙΔΑΣ is not "from" Atlanta. He is a NATIVE Californian.

Anon 12:54: Invest in a cheap dictionary and look up the terms. As opposed to characterizing such activities as parking enforcement as "genocide " as the "progressives" in Berkley do.

The local Klamath River tribes practiced slavery as late as the first decade of the 20th century. How's that for "squalor"?
