Homeless or Illegal Campers?

It took me a while to figure out why I kept seeing people being arrested for "Trespassing", when I'd read the arrest reports in the local papers. At first I assumed they were arresting anti- logging protesters.

I finally came to realize it was homeless types that were being arrested for being where they weren't supposed to be.
I'll have to admit to wondering, where are these people supposed to go? You have to sleep somewhere.

This isn't a new problem up here, for those of you that haven't lived here long. We used to have a homeless encampment out on the south spit. I can't remember if it was before or after that that we also had one up at Clam Beach. Both of those were eventually broken up and their residents sent scattering to the four winds.

I was of mixed mind even back then. On one hand I thought maybe this was the only way to do it: Give the homeless a place they could camp out and let them concentrate there, rather than in town somewhere.

Problem with that was, they still ended up in town, if for no other reason than panhandling or making their regular trip to the welfare office. They'd also make a mess of their encampents, just as happens here in town. Eventually, someone has to spend a whole lot of effort cleaning up their mess.

That's one of the questions I have about the Balloon Tract: No matter what ends up being built there, unless it remains an empty lot, where are the people camping there going to end up?

Off the topic but here it is:

Announcing creation of the new Humboldt Communitarian Forum site at: http://www.biomystic.org.

I had a forum software program not being used so I've decided to create a community forum, albeit one with my "Communitarian" slant. Blog visitors here curious about the "Communitarian" alternative to Progressive community-dividing politics, are welcome to the new Humboldt Communitarian Forum at: http://www.biomystic.org. Go to "Enter" and the link takes you to the new Forum site. If the new Forum catches on, I've posted the suggestion that Forum members transfer my forum software currently being used to another community "owned" forum platform software so that the Forum can be democratically owned and run with site administrators chosen by vote. But for now, at least we have a Humboldt community forum for people actively engaged in issues affecting Humboldt County.

Note: You have to register in order to post I believe unless posting as a "guest". Also, after posting a reply or any action on the Forum site a glitch in the software system takes you to the standard "can't find locate" page instead of going back to the Forum. You will have to press your "refresh" button at the top of your browser and then press "home" on the top of the Humboldt Communitarian Forum screen to see your post.

Ps. My Communitarian "Visions of Eutopia" are in the Creating Climax Civilization online book pages in the http://www.biomystic.org.
web site that you first enter when you go to Humboldt Communitarian Forum. These ideas collected over the years aren't doing anyone any good sitting around in file boxes so I'm "downloading" them into the community where they might inspire something good for our community's present and future health and well-being.

My psychedelic artwork can also be seen in the Kushstone Gallery pages of the website. Enjoy!

Indeed. Good luck, Steve. Hopefully it won't go the way of the Humboldt blogosphere or the forums over at Arcata.com:

Thanks, Fred. We'll see what happens. After blogging for a while, I'm not expecting the world to sit up and bark with the new Forum but who knows?

On topic, the way I remember, the clam beach encampment formed after they began pushing people off the south spit (that's how i remember it). Ann Lindsey of the County Health Department was instrumental in closing the south spit encampment due to health hazards. Not only do homeless camps leave behind a mess of trash, they also concentrate disease such as TB and hepatitis and increase the risk to the community at large. People need a place to sleep, and the community needs protection from all the problems created by homeless camps. No easy solution I know of.

The Arcata Endeavor failed to meet the criteria for renewal of its major grant funding, and only has a few months' operating expenses left. Wonder what the impact will be if/when it shuts down. I'm hopeful it will make Arcata much less attractive to the "travelers" and voluntarily "homeless" who scuz up the Plaza and Transit Center.

well, 3:32, now we know you are not Richard Salzman. That makes you either Nick Bravo or Charles Douglas. Charles seems to have the bigger axe to grind with Schultz, but it is Bravo who has been dancing up and down with fury that everyone is deleting his posts.

and jeff, the Clam Beach campers left tons of garbage, but alot of that came from well meaning people who brought the settlers food and appliances and tons of clothes. Not that they weren't capable of making a mess themselves, just look under any Arcata overpass for all the detritus they leave behind.

What was the name of the big guy, the leader, who sort of organized the Clam Beach campers, had them cleaning up and doing chores? He also took the lead when they were camped out in the Arcata forest. Some name that related to a deer, but my memory fails me.

Everyone can agree then that tax shelter housing should be limited, and homeless encampments broken up (legally) due to health consequences? >>TB, hepatitis, ecoli, typhoid, Mad Cow Disease whatever>>

Since you are posting all these notes about "white trash" Why don't you tell us who you mean. Also, is there any OTHER kind, or is ALL trash white? And by the way, what other names do you use to demean the other groups of people for whom you have no respect?

Just curious. Really curious.
