It's Glass, Kuhnel and Jones

Our very own Hank Sims takes home the prize money for correctly predicting the Times- Standard endorsements for Eureka City Council. I wasn't going to hazard a guess on this but I figured, of the Local Solutions gang, Kuhnel was the one most likely to get their endorsement.

I was a bit surprised at their picking Larry Glass. Not that I didn't think Local Solutions might take all three, but I figured it would be either a clean sweep of Local Solutions candidates, or Wolford, Leonard and Jones, the wild card being Kuhnel replacing Leonard, him having the best credentials among the Local Solutions bunch.

We'll also have to see who the T-S picks for Arcata City Council and some of the other races. Any other papers planning endorsements?

Of course, who comes out on top on November 7 is another issue entirely.

When it comes to the T/S the only surprise was Jones.

Larry Glass ? Come on !

Never again doubt the insight of the Times-Standard Endorsomatic Crystal Ball, people.

The source code for the Eureka Reporter Endorsomatic Crystal Ball is of course much simpler:

print '100% : Bass'
print '100% : Wolford'
print '100% : Leonard'
print '100% : Jones'

At least the logic on Kuhnel was reasonable. Larry Glass????

It seemed to me that they werent being consistent with their mayoral endorsements, i.e., in their opinion Lavelee is doing fine, and should continue. They basically said that about all three incumbents, and yet want change for two of them. Now I have no problem with them endorsing whomever they choose, but they should at least be consistent, and they should also just come out and state their real rationale for said endorsements.

How can a candidate who came forward with CREG being the sole purpose to stop the Marina Center project (and Best Buy) have an open mind to vote on the project?

Mary Beth studies the issues-things like the city budget. As far as city council meetings go, not a very popular time for public input when the budget is on the meeting agenda. Larry Glass has never even looked it over-the budget...you know that document the city uses to divide the pie.

Jeff Leonard also studies the issues and could use some pointers from Nancy Pelosi's consultant in getting to the point with less words-Ron Kuhnel also a 'talker' with the distinction of a Local Solutions endorsement which would make some people leery of a trojan horse.

Is there going to be comment on Brian Morrissey's use of the word 'tract' this morning?

Brian?

The TS has stated that they haven't formed an opinion about the Balloon Track. Then they go on to state that the reason they are endorsing Larry Glass is that he is the spokesman for CREG. Does the Times Standard believe that the folks here are that dumb? "He is not a one-pony show". Well it seems to me that he has been riding The Anti-Marina Center Pony for all he is worth. His very own poll, the forum, his unabashed views on the Best Buy, and Home Depot elements are the trappings on this pony. Clearly the TS has climbed on board this "Pony" that has become the size of a Clydsdale.

Mary Beth is in her quiet way leading the way toward the possibilites of new elements that are going to make a difference in how we actually live here in Eureka. She has actively promoted the West Side White paper that has opened up new ways in dealing with the "Slum Lords", and the permitting of New Community Care Homes in Eureka. She has been instrumental in the Creation of a New Alzheimer Center. She continues to study all sides of an issues. She actually went to Boston to find out more about the LNG issues that would have drastically changed our Port and City into an international terminal, thus providing a possible site for terrorism. She was not afraid to find out what it would actually mean to have such a facility here.
I have not heard anything from Larry Glass on any of these issues during the last three years.

This election will determine what the City of Eureka will look like for many years to come. We can have our Mayor the paid employee of an Action Agency which is a part of a National mandate to "legislate for the disabled", a welfare counselor who needs more and more "Clients" to retain her job, and a "social Justice" candidate that has stated privately that unless there is 100% cleanup on the BT he doesn't care if it sits there for 30 more years. The other choice is to keep folks on the Council that have a proven track record on Public Safety , new and better Jobs Goals and giving private industry the chance to keep Eureka moving forward into a better economic future.

Mary Beth also studied the city budget, which Larry Glass stated he has never read. He proposed raises for law enforcement personnel and confided he had attended a police academy, commendable, yet he has no idea how the city will pay for his great ideas. Larry knows the budget is available online as an executive summary yet even this Cliffs noted version has put him off. How could he possibly replace Mary Beth? He can't!

I met Richard Salzmann in Ron Kuhnel's home. This was during Chris Kerrigan's reelection bid. Can't say that I liked him then, nothing I've read of Hank Sim's writing has led me to change that opinion.

I think the TS endorsments were well-reasoned. Just to establish my middle-of-the-road objectivity, I would note that the biggest problem in this election is that the two best candidates, Kuhnel and Leonard, are campaigning for the same ward. It's too bad that they can't both be on the Council, but that is the problem with the ward system.

Given that, I think it is clear that Kuhnel is by far the best candidate. If Leonard were not the incumbent, he would have nothing on paper to recommend him. His only real qualifications are what he has shown in office. Kuhnel has more experience than Leonard, plus a great deal of professional background.

The endorsement of Glass is probably more of a non-endorsement for Wolford. She has consistently been an also-ran on the Council, provding no leadership to speak of. From my personal conversations with her, I can say that I have found her depth of knowledge and her grasp of issues to be seriously lacking. Glass may be more of a polarizing figure, and more likely to speak his mind (kind of a Roger Rodoni of the left), but he is also more likely to actually lead.

Neither Jones nor Abrams are particularly compelling candidates, as evidenced by the fact that neither one was really seeking the job. Jones' only qualification is that he is the incumbent, and Abrams' only qualification is that she is not Jones. In such a case, I believe the nod should go to the incumbent.

Track record on public safety= Cherie Moore shot 9 times after a 2 and a half hour standoff, because she possessed a flair gun.Track record on public safety= mail in reports on vehicle break-in's and other infractions. Meaning Saturday night to Monday morning is a free for all for aspiring burglars.
And 11:12,sometime take a look at who works for an insurance company which provides insurance for RCAA financed buildings.
And ask any members of the white paper committee what they think of Mary Beth's effort put into the committee.
My guess is,you have no idea what Larry was going through personally 3 years ago.

11:56 I agree with your points about Wolford, having also worked with her and found her wanting.

She has also been happy to take credit for other peoples’ efforts, which I don’t respect, and the Whitepaper is just the latest instance.

I agree, the best two candidates, on the whole, are Leonard and Kuhnel. Unfortunately, Kuhnel has linked himself with the Local Solutions slate, and has accepted $4500 from Pierson. No matter how reasonable he sounds, I can't get over the fact that he willingly lined himself up with the "slate"

Who I'm more interested in is the endorsements from the second tier publications like Humboldt County Lines and Emerald Coast Herald.
Although, the Trinity Baptist Church bulletin and Sierra Cascade Girl Scouts monthly newsletter are good bets on the outcome of the elections too. Pay special attention to the endorsements of the Longs Drugs October sales insert. They tend to have a pulse on the voting whims of the electorate.

Point taken about Kuhnel in August, but Kuhnel in October has been doing his damndest to distance himself from the David Cobb albatross, same goes for Nan. That's also why these folks have been declining Loco dollars. Maybe Cobb should cough up some of his Phony Phoenix funny money from DUHC instead, after all David can't pay his mortgage with "community currency" he needs the greenbacks he leeches from the local activist community instead.

Just stumbled across this little blogspot-nice!

Does anyone remember the 70's?
Larry Glass wasn't too big on living wage jobs back in the day...

He put Eureka Stereo out of business with an interesting practice-trading albumns to kids willing to work it off in his store all day. Not quite min. wage I believe the minimum was about $2.60 at that time.

What do you have to say to that Local Solutions?

At 7:01 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

5:39 said: "Point taken about Kuhnel in August, but Kuhnel in October has been doing his damndest to distance himself from the David Cobb albatross, same goes for Nan. That's also why these folks have been declining Loco dollars."

So he's changing his tune now that he doesn't think it will play well with voters. That is so disingenuous. FROM HIS OWN WEBSITE he says:

”I'm pleased to receive the endorsement of an organization such as Local Solutions, an organization that I think I share common values with,”

So have his values changed? I think not. He's just trying to play them down so he can get elected. Then once he's elected he can sing his "Local Solutions" tune again.

At 9:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anonymous 8:51 comments are perhaps understandable but also way off the mark. I know Ron well and he has not even met, let alone shared strategy with, the local solutions group. If his acceptance of the local solutions endorsement means that he does not want LNG on the bay and he believes in the public process and that unlimited big box retail may not be appropriate for the city then I think he is being true to his word. Given his integrity he is not going to deny those shared common values. Hence the statement in the brochure. Local solutions has unfortunately been tarred with a negative image, predominantly because they show up in Eureka to voice their opinions and a lot of old guard Eurekans are, lets say, a bit intolerant of outsiders. It is just smart political strategy to avoid the controversy by diving in further.

I also know that Bill Pierson is going to be very disappointed if he thinks he has purchased a vote. Ron will follow the letter of the law. Unless the EIR and the coastal commission raise concerns that cannot be easily mitigated, I cannot imagine Ron not voting to approve the zoning change required for the Marina Center. Where Ron differs
from his opponent, I believe, is that he would have done some work up front with the city in control as opposed to on the back end with Security National in the driver’s seat.

At 8:10 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

9:23 Are you really thinking anyone is going to believe your statement that Ron Kuhnel doesn't know Local Solutions-has never 'met them'?? What a load of B.S.! I met Richard Salzman in Ron Kuhnel's kitchen during a Chris Kerrigan fundraiser. Local Solutions = Richard Salzman.

9:23 PM - You bring up some interesting points.

However Union Pacific owned a piece of PRIVATE property. Now Security National owns this private property.

What could the City of Eureka have done to this private property? Nothing!

And of course, who would have paid for the City of Eureka to have anything done with this private property?

Bottom line is that Union Pacific could legally have left the Balloon Track sit an empty, polluted, blighted, property for another 100 years.

And there is nothing that you or I could have done about this.

9:23 pm and 8:11 am:

There is plenty an alert and active council could have done, just as they do with other slumlords. Floyd Squires' name ring any bells?

There is a difference between abating blight and dictating development. The council could have addressed the blight issue long ago but they preferred to complain instead.

Keeping the Master Plan process on track instead of killing it as Leonard did (at least Jones had the honesty to admit why) would have allowed us to be further down the line (still with Arkley driving development) but with more community buy-in. The current controversy is more due to the incumbents than to Arkley, in many ways.

Excuse me YOU brought up Floyd Squires!

Go down to city hall and pull up some of Floyd Squires property files-they are in the public domain. These are the thick files in the stack-the ones with all the nuisance abatement letters. City depts: Fire, police, building departments and Humboldt County Environmental Health.

Letters and more letters-Floyd's response? He picks up a building permit, writes a nice letter but mainly he avoids doing anything at all. His property on the corner of 9th and I Sts has an open building permit from 2003-nothing has been done, period.

This city council has worked hard on a nuisance abatement ordinance and hired an attorney willing to enforce municiple and civil codes-our last city attorney was not.

I will be posting leads to any documentation I can get my hands on. Last I checked it isn't Rose's specialty-guess again.

Rose is a private, unpaid activist who is hell bent on getting our DA Paul Gallegos indicted. I support her in this and so do many others.

Dick, Dickie, Richard are one in the same but not because Mr Richard Salzman tries to unite his multiple personalities-he write letters under assumed names R. Trent, whatever his dog's name is, other people's names without permission. The District Attorney couldn't actually prosecute this misdemeanor since R. Trent was like his campaign swami.
