Pickering's Letter

Jake Pickering is running for that Water District seat, the one currently held by Bruce Rupp. He recently sent out the following letter to most of the local media asking them to publish this letter of his. I received it along with at least one other blogger. I see Heraldo went ahead and published it.

I wasn't going to, at first. I figured it would likely show up in the Eureka Reporter by today anyway, which it hasn't. I also felt it would not reflect very well on someone to have such a letter published in their name. But, what the heck. He wanted it published and since I don't have much else to post here today, here it is.

He really took Dave Cobb's recent letter about all the corporate candidates in the Eureka City Council race to a new (lower?) level. I don't know that this letter was such a good idea, Jake.

“WELCOME TO ARKLEYVILLE”

by Jake Pickering (of Eureka, CA)

P.O. Box 3050, Eureka, CA

- October 12, 2006 -

- Candidate for the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District (Division 4) -

If you are like most Americans, you are well aware of the fact that it is time for change on November 7th.

If you are part of that shrinking, misguided Republican minority that believes America and Eureka are “on the right track”, then go ahead and embarrass yourself by voting for the following right-wing status-quo slate of Arkley-approved politicians: Virginia Bass Jackson, Jeff Leonard, Mike Jones, Mary Beth Wolford, Bruce Rupp & Nancy Flemming.

However, if you have actually been paying attention to the real world around you and are not currently living in a Republican state of denial, then vote against these failed, right-wing snake oil salesmen and saleswomen. As the saying goes, “Think globally, act locally.” Send the Republican Party’s contingent of paid-for politicians into retirement, where they belong!

The Louisiana-based Arkley clan carpetbaggers have funneled millions of dollars into the criminally corrupt Republican Party over the years in search of favorable legislation, more tax cuts and plutocracy. The Arkleys have always been shameless and unabashed in expressing their personal philosophy that inherited wealth entitles them to make political and economic decisions for the rest of us. No wonder the Arkley clan gave George W. Bush so much money! Apparently, fascist birds of a feather flock together.

These would-be Republican dictators believe that the residents of Eureka require nothing more from their public officeholders than slick advertising and empty promises – no results necessary!

And when you vote, remember this: these same Republican profiteers and their unethical, paid-for politicians who attempted to force a Wal-Mart on the residents of Eureka (even though 61% of Eurekans soundly rejected this big-box proposal at the ballot box in 1999) are still compulsively lying to the people of our community about their half-baked schemes.

Take this into account: none of the right-wing politicians on the Arkley-approved slate (including Bruce Rupp = multimillionaire Republican slumlord and President of the Humboldt Bay Municipal Water District) have shown the least bit of concern for cleaning up the massive and deadly toxic contamination at the Balloon Tract site, which threatens to pollute Humboldt Bay and consequently destroy the livelihoods of local fishermen.

These local right-wing politicians are far too busy salivating at the prospect of collecting further campaign contributions from the filthy rich to take the needs and desires of Eureka’s residents into consideration. In fact, the Republican Arkely clan and their right-wing political tools (Virginia Bass Jackson, Jeff Leonard, Mike Jones, Mary Beth Wolford, Bruce Rupp & Nancy Flemming) prefer a Home Depot precisely because they want to avoid their legally-mandated responsibility to decontaminate the Balloon Tract site.

These local right-wing political hacks are not merely irresponsible; they are disastrously incompetent and must be defeated at the polls this November 7th.

The vote seven years ago was AGAINST Wal-mart, which was the ONLY thing proposed for the site, not necessarily against commercial development of the Balloon Tract. And while we may disagree on the Marina Center proposal, the two projects are as different as night and day and I get tired of having the Wal-mart vote thrown up again and again as if it was carved in stone, handed down from on high. The November 7th election is about the Marina Center and the future of the Balloon Tract. Talk to me on the 8th about what the people of Eureka really want.

Wow. There is a man who doesn't understand the office he is running for. I'm sure the school board is his next attempt at defeating his supposed enemies.
Frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog is not very becoming. Even Razooly had more class and tact.

When is it going to stop being about partisan politics and more about what's good for the city/county/district.

What does George W. Bush have to do with the way we operate our water district?
Oh, that's right I forgot. CIA operatives are poisoning our water supply at the Ruth Lake reservoir with mind altering substances that make us buy only from national chain stores. Too late, the vapor trails already do that.

You're right on Jake, you got my vote.

Oh, Jake's right on. Lighten up, dudes.

I'd been wondering if I'd vote for the incumbant but now my mind is made up thanks to this well written letter. Thanks for posting it Fred!

Will someone tell me why its such an easy decision after the candidates open their mouths? The incumbants have the advantage usually in elections and its now very clear why. The incumbants all sounded like they know what is going on and how to get to the next level.

The challengers all seem to have pie in the sky ideas, bad friends, or conspiracy theories going against them.

At least I only have to tax (no pun intended) my brain worrying about the propositions!

The vote seven years ago was AGAINST Wal-mart

Actually, the ballot didn't mention Wal-Mart. The special election had to do with whether the zoning should be changed.

At 11:08 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, BS, Heraldo. Everyone knew what it was about, even if it wasn't in the wording.

At 11:33 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

heraldo-everyone knows WalMart financed the ballot measure and that is why we voted it down! But you didn't get to vote did you?

It was a city of Eureka issue.

At 1:10 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone saying the ballot measure wasn't about Wal-Mart is trying to rewrite history.

What's with the obsession with Richard Salzman?
I don't think I've read much if anything from him on here, but some of you are so obsessed it makes me think you need to be adjusting your meds before you approach the keyboard. Get a life, boys and girls.

Do you really doubt that Jake Pickering can be weird all on his own?

At 4:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't know Pickering but it is obvious that he can be weird all on his own.

I don't think that there is any obsession with R. Trent...just a bunch of folks pointing out reality.

At 4:38 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, its an obsession.

Hey now, you've got your Arkley Obsession, we've got our Salzman Obsession, it's all good.

You won't read anything from Salzman on here - knowingly - because he doesn't post under his own name. But he is here. Constantly working to structure the debate (and pat himself on the back.)

What he and Pickering ignore is that the big money contributions seem to be rolling in to the left wing candidates - from Pierson. Big money, and definitely designed to sway the outcome and protect his interests.

But hey, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...

Why would someone of such evil ne'er-do-well give so much to the community? And a great majority of it anonymously. I guess to disquise his evilness. The man must have a cold, cold heart.

Ok, all of you college students who took his money in the Economic Fuel business plan contest need to give it back right now. All $125,000 of it. It's the right thing to do. Kombucha Kulture lady...that means you too. Let's storm the zoo and burn it to the ground. Let's treat the Boardwalk to the same degree as the Berlin Wall. Everyone hoist your sledgehammers. Everything with the Arkley name attached to it must be destroyed so "the people" can enjoy the freedoms they have never known. That new performing arts center...that needs to be torched too. And tear down all of the statues and posters of his likeness from the city centers and shopping plazas. "Power To The People"

He wants to own it and he feels that this is his own playgroud and backyard, screw everyone else. The Arkleys donate to commissions and various boards, then they have all of the board members whom they dislike and disagree with replaced. Look what happened when Rob Arkley's daughter didn't get a lead role in a play. Look what he did to the zoo advisory board. These donations are chump change to the Arkley's, and always comes with rewards to them through back room style deals for their deeds.

Maybe nobody ran the over-the-top Pickering letter in any newspaper because it isn't customary to give candidates any free press without giving the other candidates equal space.

At 6:45 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Considering that this Jake Pickering is not even a registered voter in the city of Eureka.

And that this individual has put out the most lame flyer complete with photos of Bruce Rupp, George Bush and a crying baby for a local water district election, he really needs to take his meds and put down the kool-aid.

All I can say is stranger things have happened in local Humboldt elections.

Arcata elected an 18-year old communist to their school board.

At 6:53 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jake, don't know how to tell you but Jeff Leonard and Mary Beth Wolford are Democrats and have not taken a dime of Arkley contributions.

You may want to check out how much Bill Pierson has contributed to the slate.

What does 1999's Measure J have to do with today's water board election?

Why am I even responding to an obvious mental case?

If this is the best the radical left has to offer, I take back all my comments on Larry Glass.

Besides, Larry is looking fairly spiffy after his Extreme Makeover.

7:23 The Boardwalk in Eureka has seen enough damage-please do not incite others to help vandalize it.

The Boardwalk in Eureka-(PUBLICLY OWNED)-is a multimillion dollar project that experienced construction overruns and came up $2 Million short when it was near completion.

The Arkley's generous donation of that $2 Million made all the difference and they are warmly thanked for their generosity.

But they didn't build the Boardwalk. It was a city project culminating over 8 years work by Mayor Nancy Flemming, the City Council and Eureka City staff.

We the people own it! And We The People of Eureka and others who visit the Boardwalk are hurt every time we run across someone's left trash, not to mention paraphernalia and graffiti. Incite your riot someplace else!

Nancy Flemming takes a lot of credit for work done by others, including Old Town development, which started many years before she arrived on the scene.

At 10:33 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Its very nice that a variety of people have been involved in Old Town Restoration. There are many private developers who have rebuilt, refaced or preserved buidings all over Eureka. Sad to see they are overlooked by all the attention the Arkley family gets-both negative and positive.

More attention should be paid to ALL those who invest in this community.

At 10:39 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nancy Flemming lives close to the land-and water on Humboldt Bay. She is an accompished member of the art community. She made the 'mistake' of making friends with some that other despise.

Which makes it more convenient to pick on her-seemingly spreading this attack against Security National out over more territory.

Do you despise the Arkley's for sharing their wealth with the community?

Do you despise them for providing good paying jobs to several hundred local people?

Do you despise them for bringing money in from the accounts they process from all over the country?

Or do you despise them for just having a nice house in the center of Eureka and walking their own dogs, shopping in our same stores, raising a family here the way they themselves were raised here?

The Arkleys are LOCALS.

Fred, I disagree with most of your political observations, but I'll tell ya right now:

Humboldt Lib Blog is WAY better than that useless egotistical jackass site - buhne tribune.

Why does BT get so much attention when the buhne tribune site is so godawful lame?

It's not a funny site... it's not an informative site... it's not even interesting...

So why does it get attention?

Oh yeah.... rob arkley runs it.

I'd like to see some turf wars.... maybe you could set up a discussion about BT and we could get some feedback.

Like I said, I don't agree with a lot here on Humboldt Lib Blog, but at least it seems like a real forum.

BT is a useless sophomoric wank session.

Ditto for little Leonard.

They are plenty happy to attend the parties, take the free trips, take the bundled donations from those who are beholden to him, sell him tickets by the hundreds, basically drink the kool-aid. And they don't even admit how much they have been accepting. I wouldn't be surprised if some local papers (no, not the ER, of course) have some choice headlines about certain elected officials not noting all their donations.

What a sad life you must lead.
To think of so much that you despise, and not thing of the beauty in life.

There is a lot to love here in Eureka:

I love when the sun shines brightly in the middle of October.

I love being able to buy organic produce from my local market.

I love having parks within walking distance of my home.

I love going to Arts Alive and showing my son there is diversity in the world.

I love whipping into Shafer's and having someone helping me find exactly what I need. In and out in less than 15 minutes.

I love Fred's blog, where people vent their opinions....whether I agree with them or not!

I love the variety of restaurants with delicious food.

Lots more.........

Were you referring to Bill Pierson and his massive financial contributions to the "slate", the so-called unbiased candidates?

The one thing that no one has mentioned yet is that if one single "slate" candidate actually gets elected to the Eureka City Council, they will have to recuse themselves from any vote on the Balloon Tract.

Just the same if Flemming is elected and gets on the Coastal Commission. Nancy would have to recuse herself voting on the Balloon Tract project.

Same goes for Bonnie after taking almost $20,000 from Pierson (so far).

As for candidates not noting all of their donations, check the Paul Gallegos 460s. A certain political consultant from Trinidad tries to use his P.O. Box, an FPCC no-no, instead of his Edwards Street physical address.

Also many of Gallegos contributor's employers are shown as “pending”, another FPCC no-no. Technically a political candidate has 30 days to correct the 460s or they must return the financial contribution.

At 5:52 PM, Blogger Rose said...

I noticed that, too, as I've been working on entering those onto a post. I didn't realize 'pending' was a no-no.

What I noticed most was the numerous large contributions from out of the area.

Should have at least a partial post up soon.

I'm surprised that right-wing fool Fred had the courage to publish Jake Pickering's "Welcome To Arkleyville." I wonder why I haven't seen Pickering's article elsewhere? No other "journalists" in Humboldt County with the backbone to give a truthteller like Pickering a forum, apparently? Why can't the other local Democrats just tell it like it is, like Jake does? The Eureka good 'ol boys (and girls) network is not only detrimental to our community, it is embarrassing. Just look at Nancy Flemming.......

I read about the Arkleys actually residing legally in Louisiana (for tax purposes and because Humboldt County is now "socialist", according to that spoiled rich idiot Robin, Jr.) in The Humboldt Advocate. So why are they trying to tell us in Eureka what to do? Maybe the Arkleys should just go to hell along with their hero George Bush, Jr.

Did I say I disliked Jake Pickering? I've never met him. If I said anything it was that the sort of rhetoric he offers in his letters is not the kind of thing that wins the hearts and minds of the vast majority of people.

I don't know about that, Fred. I agree with Jake Pickering on this one. The local good ol' boys network in Eureka is a flipping disgrace. Not a brain amongst the whole bunch of those rich bastards, if you ask me Fred.
