Fish Cops Needed

A rather troubling development in the natural resources field, although nothing really new as it's been mentioned here before that game wardens are spread pretty thin around the state:

Game Warden applications in the state are at an all time low. If you've got two years of college, maybe this is the job for you?

No big deal Fred. The CHP are also hiring, and advertising jobs all over. Agencies from other states are advertising in California papers for police officers. EPD is advertising for vacancies. They can't seem to hire enough cops! But who would want the thankless job.

I have always had a great deal of respect for and admiration toward most of the individuals who enter law enforcement. That said, I can't imagine why any sane man or women would sign up in this day and age of recreational cop hating (see Heraldo.) THank goodness they do, but I don't get it.

Fred, do you know who the name of the film maker Buhne referenced a few days ago that is coming to town to do a piece on the A-team?

The big deal is that wardens are far and few between as it is. They're retiring, or taking other jobs, faster than they can replace them already.

Too add insult to injury, very few people are applying for those jobs. Of those that do apply, few are accepted.

No, 10:11, I don't know of whom Buhne speaks.

Because they get paid very good money and benefits, for one thing.

The real reason is not pay and benefits. People who go into law enforcement despite the risks and the cop-haters are better people than we are.

They take the risks every day so they can protect their fellow-citizens in concrete, practical ways.

We bloggers do our bit, too. But our contributions to the public weal are a bit removed, and sometimes somewhat abstract.

The people who serve in law enforcement give real help to real people dozens of times a day.

They also know that no matter how vocal their critics, most citizens value their work and go to them for help because they trust them to do the right thing in effective ways.

The people who enter law enforcement are human, therefore they are fallable. However, considering the non-stop nature of the challenges they face every day at work, they perform remarkably well.

I believe law enforcement is less a career than a calling.

Law enforcement is a calling for most, not just a career. And we are all safer for it.

3:05PM, did your mother have any children that lived? Do you even know who your mother is?
