Will It Snow?

Doppler radar shows even more light snow a little ways off the coast than it did an hour and a half ago. Might we get some snow showers?

I'm guessing within three hours from now we should find out.

Be careful on exposed surfaces, especially stairs.

I just went out front to pick up the newspapers. Some guy comes out of the Matteoli's front door just then. He starts down their stairs- must be six or seven stairs there- and slips, sliding on his back and butt all the way to the sidewalk.

Looks like no harm done, him being a bit younger than me. He got in his car and drove off. If that had been me, I might have broken something.

Weird thing is how the stairs are icey, but there's not all that much frost as I would expect.

The things with water in the back yard aren't frozen as hard as they've been in the past, yet some surfaces have ice on them.

Probably not a good time to be driving, either.

Right now, Weather.com shows the temp in Eureka (I believe that's taken down at the Marina) as 29 degrees. I believe it was 27 or 28 when I got up.

Now that I can see it, our thermometer on the back patio shows it around 40, maybe 41 degrees. Wonder if that's from heat radiating from the house?

I was worried about our water pipes freezing and breaking. It was somewhat reassuring to read in this Sacramento Bee news article that pipes usually don't break unless the temperature goes below 20 degrees.

Still, I need to try and remember to wrap up some of the outside pipes today. You never know.

Ouch to the guy that fell down the stairs! I know that experience from Christmas Day. The rubber mats are working out well on the deck now. There was ice and what looked like frozen hail.

There is a dusting of snow on Bear River Ridge above Ferndale and on the mountains up the Eel River Valley. Very pretty.

Our neighbor and Greg rigged up lamps to keep the well pumps from freezing. It is suppose to be colder tonight. Will have to cover up the lemon tree and the princess bush.

Supposed to snow to sea level.

I always take off all hoses on outside faucets when it gets cold as the water will freeze in the hose and expand and can break pipes.

The coast weather report calls for scattered rain. The special weather statement calls for snow down to 500 feet. I look outside and see blue sky.

It snowed in Loleta just awhile ago. The temperature just went down from 40 degrees F to 36 degrees F in 20 minutes. There is a big system looming over Cape Mendocino. Snow is accumulating on Bear River Ridge above Ferndale.

We had snow-like drops on the windshield driving home just now, still pretty wet, but as it gets colder we could see it tonight!

If it snows people will die. Do you want people to die Carol Ann?

My understanding is that the official Eureka temperature has been taken at the same location in Old Town for about 150 years.

well, have to say that the temp on the beach at this time, 7:30pm, is 32 degrees... The coldest so far has been 28 degrees 2 weeks ago..

so, time to bundle up, grab a movie, a warm body--and enjoy---for spring is not far away--I hope...

Yes, snow will fall from the sky like daggers and piece us through the heart. Run! Run! The snow is coming! Everyone into their snowout shelters!

Carol Ann gleefully calls for snow in Eureka when she know's some missing child somewhere in Eureka will be frozen to the sidewalk and die as a result of this horrific weather.

Oh, lighten up. Nothing wrong with wanting to see snow. Bad things can happen with any kind of weather.

Late Friday morning, on a drive from Eureka to Crescent City, I saw what I had never seen before.

The branches of the tall trees in the hills just south of Crescent City were heavily layered with snow (from the night before, I would guess.) They resembled nothing so much as towering Christmas trees, flocked with white.

As I drove, in the warming air, the snow was falling lightly from the branches of those trees, landing on the roadway and windshields of cars like mine.

People who had lived there a long lifetime said they hadn't seen such a sight there before.

It was beautiful. The most beautiful, I think, in the near half-century since I first drove that stretch of road.

Sounds like a winter wonderland, 12:44.

I heard on KMUD the last two nights that the Vet's Hall in Garberville opened their doors to the homeless. It was also reported that several churches have opened their doors, too, for people.

The same thing is happening in Crescent City.
