A Great Idea For Selling Trinkets

The Sell- Trinkets- To- Tourists crowd is back in the news again, this time with a great idea: Let's turn Humboldt County into a National Heritage Area!

Gee, now why didn't I think of that? After all, the creation of Redwood National Park has been such an economic boon to its surrounding areas. Just ask the residents of Orick.

How about we start taking in each others laundry? Rearrange the deck chairs on the Brother Jonathan?

Fred you are such a negative person. Does anything go right in your 'libertarian' world? If we live in such a dystopian world, why arnt you organizing a resistance to our oppressive government, fighting for your life from this oppressive govt, or just killing yourself?

You just strike me as a deeply negative and critical person.

What...me negative? Didn't I suggest it was a great idea?

Redwood Natl Park is quite a tourist draw. What Orick has made of ITSELF is kinda cheesy. Aren't grants available? how about Prosperity $$-it doesn't have to look like a trailer park...

As for the National Heritage Area-with a timber museum & trains, maritime museum and this close to so many natural attractions its on the radar for more types of tourists. Who knows Fred-you might want to open a lemonaide stand.

Hey, go start your own happy, uplifting blog, but don't expect people to read it.

What, like your blog Carson?

Carson, what story have you put on your blog that either Buhne or Heraldo didn't post first? At least people actually read what Fred writes on here. And at least he isn't a pale copy of others work.

Right on! Get a fucking grant! Now there's some economic prosperity. Thank YOu RNP. Not to long ago there was a major tourist attraction at Freshwater Spit in Orick that brought in over 5 million dollars a year for the local economy. Thank the North Coast Enviromental Center for that screwing. While their glad handing for money maybe they can start their own trailer park. They really can make money but probably not with the eco-crowd in control.

At 9:21 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The NEC had nothing to do with that.

Redwood National Park has been a HUGE benefit to the county. Just ask anyone working in the tourist economy. It's a magnet. Sorry Orick, but it's been fantastic for the rest of us.

Yes! I agree whole-heartedly! I am sick of businesses which depend upon tax-payer handouts, with no reasonable liklihood of ever paying off.

How about that whole "industrial deep-water port" boon-doggle? 600 million taxpayer dollars to re-build the rail line to the South. 400 million taxpayer dollars to realign and widen 299 to accomodate longer trucks. 100 million and counting for the repeated and fruitless dredging of the bay. Where is the billion-dollar return on all of this public money supposed to come from? Does anyone really beleive that this is anything but another taxpayer handout?

We need real jobs based on our real economic strengths, not more subsidized plundering of our natural wealth.

At 12:32 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The NEC lied every day, every meeting, every chance they got and they damn well are to blame for screwing Orick and Hum.Co.at the Spit. Get another fucking grant and shut down our bay too. If you think you can live without production from our natural wealth you probably think Barry Sonds didn't use steroids.

At 1:36 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I sense some anger here.

The closure was based on enforcement of existing state and federal policy. NEC could have not existed and the there would have been the same result.

I recall that an Orick resident made a bid to buy the Freshwater Spit for more $$$ than what the Parks had agreed to pay the State for the property, and the law apparently required the State to take the higher offer -- what ever happened with that?

At 8:28 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

didn't fit the plan

At 8:40 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hum county needs an old fashioned WPA project to get people some real jobs and create some uplifting spirit thoughout this place

Maybe a new lodge in the park? On the bay?

At 9:21 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's all whine that the co-op took our fish sculpture. What else can we whine about? Orick has no community pride, so don't try to say it did back when the park took the land. It was nothing then. It's nothing now. Truth is, we like it that way and just want leverage to blame our woe on other people. Come up here before purporting to know what we think.

At 9:29 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Orick without the park? Now THAT would be depressing.

At 10:17 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No park would mean they would still have private sector jobs.

At 10:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wrong. That land would have been logged long ago and now there would be no park or jobs.

At 12:57 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:17 please pull your head out from wherever it's hidden and please stop spreading 1950's style myths.

At 1:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If the park were to be open to logging, all the redwood would flood the market for an eternity- thereby forcing the price of redwood chainsaw carvings and windmills into a nosedive, sapping orick's trinket fueled economy. They better hope that park never gets logged...

The heritage area idea is a good one. Once the tourism infrastucture is built up it will inspire more people to stay longer as they pass through. Once the infrastructure is built up, then the start up funds for creating interpretive centers won't be needed. These types of grants are only given with matching funds — that means for every dollar given, there is a dollar earned.
There is some really extraordinary history and coastline up here that isn't being used to its fullest potential. This could help that without raping the environment. (No I'm not an environmentalist so don't start) That isn't to say that there doesn't need to be other industry to keep the economy afloat. This will just give tourism a shot in the arm. Why is everyone so fucking doom and gloom all the time? What do you do for this community outside of your job and home? Maybe instead of shitting on everyone's positive, forward-thinking ideas — you could take some time to invest a little of yourself in the community at large.

12:57 -
You are saying that if that park was still private land, private employers would not be managing it? That does not make any sense.

10:56- have you heard of 2nd & 3rd growth?

idiots

At 8:42 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

People are managing it right now, the public is allowed to enjoy it, and the ecosystem is intact. We all win, friend.

Some really do know the truth but continue the lie. The Spit was legally to go to the community of Orick first, the Park forced itself into the land swap with Cal Trans in the same corrupt way it did at Tolawa Dunes and other locations in Ca. to do three things. Close down our county to tourism and crush whats left of resource production and expand their glutttonous desire for expansion. These state land swaps are end runs around the public process with no oversites or participation that we usually enjoy. Local groups like the NEC among others were however in the loope and had great access to the development of the so called plan. Fortunatly some in Orick also new the law and forced some adhearance to other land swap requirements and forced a value to be placed on the strip. When that was done a legitimate offer to buy the spit was placed by an Orick resident. That offer still stands and the parks action on the spit are illegal. The Costal Commissions decession to allow the parks actions shows how utterly untouchable and corrupt they have become. But hey, when did legality or right and wrong for that matter, have any affect on these power plays. This an example of the many back handed ways our economy has been taken from us. Most of us would be happy to co-exhist with a park that could play nice. How do you get people to come to a venue ? Big organizations spend millions to figure out exactly what side of the street in which town to place an attraction. Without it most attempts fail. At the spit in Orick we had a historic summer tourist destination that brought in app.5 million dollars a year to the local economy. A place the public had already chosen to go. They are gone and are not comming back. Thats the problem not the idea of a heritage area. That idea is fine, just remember the failure of RNP and State Parks in their promise of increased vistor numbers. I'd suggest you contact the Cresent City Chamber of Commerce and you will see the figuers are dismal while Oregons Parks are steadly growing, because they are welcoming the people we have shunned. I don't mean to be a wet rag, your idea is good its just terribly hampered by our recient history.Don't be pissed at people working to correct this problem, help them.

8:42 - my point was private sector jobs would still be available in Orick, not public.

At 4:33 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What private sector jobs would end up in B$M F#@K Orick? How many chainsaw sculptures and bird houses could one rest stop support?? What an idiot.
But Without the parks there would be even less-the spit campers made it worse than ever like a long trailer trash, garbage dumping, shithole.
There has to be something else! Whatever happened to startup money to restore the hotel-or build something new? Did Rolfs restaurant ever find a new home or is that a memorial plaque now?
That whole place could be more than it is-pride has to start in little pieces-maybe cleaning up what they already have?
But no Spit Campers-get real, get some plumbing, get a chain campground or something...anything!

At 6:26 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No joke 4:33. Stop whining about your illegal campers being the lifeblood of the community! Show some pride and make it happen. If bitching about the campers on the spit is your only angle, perhaps the entire sh*thole should be leveled and started from scratch. The town is an eyesore.

Lets see, dumb ass 433 - how about foresters, truck drivers, biologists, maybe a mill? Plus support industries. In any case, the property would be generating property taxes, not using them. Dumb ass.

At 9:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:49 your right on. 6:26 your a dumb shit and an apologist for your eco-terrorism. I'd bet your an NEC supporter. 7:35 they don't get it because they're bottom feeders and there's always another F---ing freeloader grant.

At 10:07 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes the parks are trying to close us all down starting with tourism, then resources, then they want to expand their gluttonous appetites! Hopefully my next grant comes through or I'll have to go into the chainsaw carving/Methamphetamine problem.Sheeeit, place used to crawl with biologists and the such but now them freakin' hippies forced us to chainsaw art. Gettin a grant is easy though, like a hippie welfare check.I guess just a welfare check.

Self fullfilling prophecy-when you turn out tens of thousands of kids from university with degrees in shore bird biology, enviromental studies, water and air quality, and planning with all of the above enviromental enphises and no one gets a degree in forestry or standard engineering you have your very simple answere. You get out what you put in,and the powers to be are gonna find jobs in these fields for these young zealous converts to the entitlement, grant funded world we now inhabit. As bad as meth is its pales in comparison to this epidemic

At 7:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, self fulfilling prophecy- The more educated citizens in the work force, the more scrutiny business will receive.

At 6:34 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

and those who do not assimilate will be re-educated, starved out, or removed. Very progressive.

At 5:44 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We all want and need educated workers/citizens. Not indoctrinated ones.
