Put Down That Knife!

Is it just me? It sure seems there's been a lot of stabbings around here lately. This one occuring a couple days ago and this one occuring a few days before that. I seem to remember some others not too long ago, including the stabbing at The Shanty and the murder of that Davenport guy before that.

Wonder if we'll hear any cries for knife control from any of the local gadflies or political groups?

And the one after Davenport, the 50 some year old parolee that got killed by being stabbed.

Seems kind of suspicious since knives are not really dangerous. I wonder what Ken, Margie, Heraldo, and Noel have to say about this?

On another note gun control is working. Although it's not impossible for criminals to get guns it is more difficult due to the new/recent laws and regulation.

Tell the people in the Bay Area cities, that are screaming about their large homicide rates, that.

Any examples ? Links ?

Freddy it's a fact that cops are seizing fewer guns over the past ten years. partly because of gun laws and partly because of enhancements for using a gun in a crime (if the DA will file them).

It's true, guns are a big problem to society.

I'm all for gun control and control of certain types of extreme knives that people have no business carrying around with them for day-to-day business. Of course, a certain blogger thinks it's normal to be carrying a switchblade around on the street, as if you're going to hunt and gut a dear on the streets of Eureka.

Humm. Not a bad idea if you substitute bed wetting, gun fearing progressive for "deer" :o)

No stupid lefty commentary so far, eh Fred?

Well I sure hope that all the gun control advocates don't believe that the war on drugs has worked.

When dope is outlawed, only dopes will have... what was that again?

We could solve a lot of problems by requiring all knives to be thick enough so the police can shoot them out of the bad guys' hands.

Maybe we can pass a law that all knives will be dull from now on. That should take care of the problem!

Or we could pass a law to ban all bad guys from owning knives. We'll need a catchy slogan. How about "No knives for knaves."

Simple, easy, direct methods of fighting knife crime. I am so smart. It would take a legislature twenty years to come up with such bright ideas. And I came up with mine in about two minutes flat!

11:25 asks, "Any examples ? Links ?".

There's all kinds of stuff out there. For starters, see if you can find a copy of John Lott's book, More Guns, Less Crime. He did some research on the subject. If you can't find the book for free, the Amazon reviews may be of interest, although I haven't read all of them.

I'm sure you're going to suggest he's some gun lobby hack. In fact, according to him, when he started his paper on the subject, he thought he would find that gun control laws do work. He felt differently after looking into it.

I try not to deal with gun control issues too much here, so don't follow them much anymore. I do, however, regularly run in to items in the news regarding gun control. I'll try and remember and find room for them here in the future.

In the meantime, whatever his name is over at the Nobody's Business blog, gives us a fun heads up on guns from a government gun buy- back program in Australia ending up being used in crime again.

Switchblades are probably the most worthless knives around, if you've ever seen one. I seen hundreds and owned a few, since they're sold all over the place south of the border.

They're nearly always cheaply made and the steel on the ones I've owned were pretty much unsharpenable. I can't imagine anyone actually wanting a switchblade for any purpose, legal or illegal.

I'm sure you're actually referring to "lockback knives", which we dealt with here in the aftermath of the Burgess shooting. Lockback knives, if I'm correct in what the law considers such, consist of probably the majority of commercially available folding knives today.

They're safer for the user than a regular folding knife as the blade can't close unless you unlock it. And yes, myself (and I assume most people up here) don't care if people carry around folding knives, whatever the type.

I know what you're getting at, 7:18. I wrote over on Heraldo's blog that if stupid, infantile comments are made on the blogs, they usually come from the Left, which isn't to say that lefties can make intelligent comments as well.

I don't know that I'll go so far as to withdraw that statement, but I'll give the Left the prize on this thread for the hardest hitting commentary, at least so far, to 1:34 who wrote,

"Fred, you are one ignorant fuck.".

Boy, good thing I only have to deal with him on the blogs where I have time to formulate responses to him. I'd hate to debate him in person. I'd lose for sure.

Burgess did not have a folding knife.

And after reading the paper this morning I saw that a knife was used in a robbery at a local motel.

A knife can be an ugly weapon, and create ugly wonds.

As for the war on drugs. Who knows how many kids didn't use drugs because of the War on Drugs effort? I don't know and neither do you. But all the effort had to produce some positive things. The drug problem is still here, no one thing can cure it. Especially not legalization.

I didn't say Burgess had a folding knife when he was killed. He was arrested years earlier at school for having a lockback knife. Some here apparently think lock back knives should be banned.

You can't blame this on the Boy Scouts or peaceful whittelin'.It's the damn Swiss, its all their fault,I saw it comming,I've spoken out aganist them,I've tried to allert the public ,the media, the government, all to no avail. I even tried to enact tariffs to slow down the onslaught of this evil spreading over our country ,enslaving our children, our campers, and survivalist. Oh, yes I saw through the cheep trick of spoons, tooth picks, finger nail trimmers, and cork screws. No matter how you candy coat it, this is an evil that we can no longer ignore and must be controled. We must go back to the source. The Swiss. Support the House Bill,"SOSAN",it's our only chance to turn this horor around and make the streets, back yards and camp sites of America safe again. Call your Senators immediatly and ask them to support "Stamp Out Swiss Army Knives" Please!,it's for the children. Dennis Mayo

Hey Fred, maybe it has something to do with your infantile comments on Heraldo's blog. Y'know, the one where you go on and on about 11 year olds enjoying molestation.

At 6:05 PM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

No. Maybe it has something to do with certain commentors- mostly from the left- making stupid comments, long before Heraldo even broached that subject?
