Cop Stuff

With a new police chief being chosen for Eureka, it will be interesting to see how long he lasts. I could be wrong but it seems to me the ones Eureka hired from out of town in the past only hung around a few years.

Then again, doesn't seem like the ones we hire from within the department last all that long, either.

I don't remember who the chief was when I first moved up here in '73. The first one I have memory of is Ray Shipley who, although I forget his exact period in office, was chief when I went through the Redwoods Police Academy.

He moved on to become Chief of Police in Portland(?), Oregon, if memory serves me correct. Will this new guy end up doing the same?
*********
Interesting story on this new Eureka cop in today's Eureka Reporter. I was surprised at the statistics in the article showing only 13 out of 41 of Eureka's sworn police officers have prior military experience. I would of thought it would have been the other way around.

Let the loonies begin. I predict the "hate all cops" brigade will be digging like gophers into his background - I hope he hasn't shot somebody in his career - that's all they'll need to find out. And as an aside, aren't we going on a year and still no Cherie Moore decision from the DA?

It's because you usually can get a better job than Eureka Cop with prior military service.

Heraldo's funky bunch have already begun spewing their cop-hating bile.

The more important experience to keep in mind, Fred, is the university degree in criminology Nielsen has. If every cop around here were required to get a BA in criminology or psychology, we wouldn't have this gun-happy problem, as the neanderthals who can't get a degree couldn't get a badge in the first place.

Wrong. I'm impressed with what I've learned about Nielsen. He was chosen unanimously and made a positive impression on Councilman Glass.

Quit being so stupidly divisive.

I think trigger happy cops are just what Eureka needs these days- let's not dilly dally with meth heads. I'm thankful for the EPD.

It doesn't appear that Nielsen wants to run a department of trigger happy cops.

He sounds great to me. He wants educated people. Thats all I needed to hear. He has not just been promoted from within. I think in another year or two EPD will be the model for humco once again. Things are looking up!

Uh, and just who is going to prosecute the cases these
educated people are going to investigate? Schartz?

I really hope the usual unfounded optimism that accompanies any new face is warranted this time.

As others have observed, the real challenge for Nielsen will be to overcome the rampant ignorance and redneck mentality that pervades the electorate and is reflected in county government.

My gut feeling is he'll start off as a reformer but end up as a lap dog of the right wing authoritarians who see police as a means to preserve the existing social order rather than protecters of liberty.

Who can blame any Police Chief for leaving when your directed by a bunch of ignorant Council members on how things should be done in this town .It's not The Chief's fault for any wrong doings or not enforcing Law and Order......it's the stupid Councils ! The Council says Don't enforce this or don't do that against the Police Chiefs
wishes .
