Marina Center Strikes Again

I just noticed the Quizno's sandwich place on Broadway in Eureka closed down. Eureka loses yet another business because of Marina Center and construction on Marina Center hasn't really even started yet. Seems the mere thought of another big box coming to town is driving businesses under.

On the bright side, it's one more business to add to our list of chain stores and restaraunts that went by the wayside in Humboldt. Who's in charge of the list?

I have the list.

$100 says that another (non-subway saturated) entity will occupy the hugely profitable space within two months. How about it Fred?

Sometimes customer service and marketing play a part in business success...but then, I bet you never went there. too busy watching the History Channel with your non-fat oatmeal.

Are you joining the paranoid chorus of candle shop enthusiasts? Or do you really have an understanding of the dynamics that pertain to consumer drivers?

Dang those Arkleys. They just screwed up another opportunity for you.

Cripes....the outpatients are out in force these days.

People vote and buy with their feet.

No it wasn't due to a change in supply/demand that "Market Faith" believers attribute everything to. It just happened that last year's harvest money has been circulated through the shop and the owner has no more need of a money laundry.

Do I detect some humour Fred?

Actually, the Quizno's chain yanked the franchise from the owners (who also ownED) the store on fifth (fourth?) street.

Seems they were not using franchise approved stuff such as meats etc, not doing other things mandated by the franchisor.

Franchise chains are extremely intolerant of any deviation from the Franchise "recipie", the theory being that you should be able to get the same burger (or sandwhich, as the case here) in Eureka, Peoria, or Hong Kong.

This isnt guess work on my part. Someone very close to the situation told me (aka, ownership, past and or present)

Someone else now owns the franchise next to the starbucks on fifth street.

And actually, the Philly Cheese Steak shop is adding another restaurant there.

Seems like a tough spot for a restaraunt, though - hard to get in and out of. Never saw a lot of people getting pizza there when it was papa johns, and I think before that it was a breakfast place.

Have you lost all ability to reason ? I'm sure with a little time you'll cure"global warming" by stopping the Marina Center.

Ho ho ho! The absurdity of it all. Just let Rob rule. Believe. No need to question. We've seen what they do. They're fabulous.

Humor, on a serious issue oriented blog like this?

Agreed. Which is one reason I never went there. Oddly enough, though, I just noticed Quizno's was gone while stopping at the Taco Bell next door.

I love Taco Bell for a fast and inexpensive meal, but I rarely go to the one in Eureka because it's a hassle to get in and out of. I try my best to avoid going down Broadway, but since I had to anyway, perfect excuse to stop by Taco Bell.

It doesn't seem to bother most people though. Parking lot was full when I was there yesterday. And that was after the lunch hour.

Fred, did you write this post because you fundamentally misunderstand the issues of the Marina Center, or because you want to insult our intelligence?

Man, some people are completely unable to recognize sarcasm when it's printed. Did you people really think that Fred was blaming the yet-to-be-constructed Marina Center for Quizno's demise?

On another note, the last time I went to Taco Bell was definitely the last time. What awful, horrible, tasteless, low-quality food! Hard to believe I grew up eating that crap! It certainly has no connection to real Mexican food!

Hey! You don't be knocking my Taco Bell.

Funny thing about Taco Bell, at least the one in Willits, is how many Mexicans not only work there, but eat there.

I think Philly Cheese Steak is moving from Downtown to there. There was a big moving van outside their place this morning.

Agree with another previous post that Quisnoz by the Starbucks was sold to another owner. If you own a franchise you have to buy certain things there and play the franchise game. If you don't they pull your franchise. Has nothing to do with Marina Center, Arkley or any other business here.

Have never been to Philly Cheese Steak and probably won't go if it moves. Heart attack city in waiting.

As for Taco Bell, I don't know what is wrong with them here but I think they may be violating their franchise also. Willits Taco Bell is not like any of ours here. True it is not Mexican food, but I used to like it in the area that we lived and liked their bean burritos. Of course, I am a junk food eater so I go to some of the fast food restaurants, but now for only certain things and not every day.

I have always liked Jack In the Box tacos as I lived in San Diego where the first Jack In the Box was opened and our "group" always stopped in for tacos or hambugers before going to the drive in movie. They usually had a special on each of them for 6 for $1 and that was cheaper than any movie food that was not very good anyway.

Businesses come and go for different reasons - I read the post that Quiznos may have gone out of business because their laundry money was . . . Don't know about that. Maybe a reporter will look into to that as that could be a story if it is true. Probably just another franchise that did not follow rules. Never know though.

That's one reason I like Taco Bell. I can get two plain bean burritos for just around $2.00 and that's a meal for me. Prefer the seven layer burritos but noticed yesterday they raised the price a bit.

I ended up buying the relatively new "1/2 pound beef and bean burrito...", they have some other name for them. Just over $1.00 each, but I think they really need some work. I find them wanting. Their plain bean burritos are better, imo.

"I have always liked Jack In the Box tacos...".

Hmmm...does Jack In The Box still make those tacos? If so, I'll have to try them. I'm not too impressed with JIB. I went to the one in Eureka once and was unimpressed with their small menu. Food I ordered wasn't very impressive either.

Best tacos I've had in my life were the ones the old A&W Root Beer, corner of Myrtle and West in Eureka, made. That's where that Mexican restaraunt is now. I believe they were less than $1.00 each and were TASTY!

The Eureka A&W might have been the only one making them. After that place closed down I stopped at an A&W in Cloverdale(?) and asked if they made those tacos. They were surprised to hear that any A&W made tacos.

"I read the post that Quiznos may have gone out of business because their laundry money was".

If you're new to the Humboldt blogs, you'll find there are some people that always accuse someone else of some sort of unscrupulous activity. Not that some things might be true, but there's some people that throw out accusations as a matter of habit, or so it seems.

Man that old A&W in Myrtle was bad ass. Root beer floats. When I was really young I remember the waitresses roller skating to parked car service, I think. I could be getting memories confused with the one in Cloverdale, but I don't think so.

I loved the mash tato fake fries at A & W. Also the bacon pieces they put in their Papa Burger. Or was Mama burger? Baby Burger?

Richard you are even more obsessed with food than I am, and that is a scary thought.
