Loneliest Guy In The World?

Sometimes I think I must be the loneliest guy in the world.

I don't seem to have the same interests and pleasures others do. Like sports: Couldn't care less about sports. TV shows: Sure, I probably like some shows others do, but it seems when there's some show I really like, not enough others do and it gets taken off the air. The list goes on.

Then, there's the weather. It was real warm yesterday- hot, by my standards. Everybody seems to be loving it, but me. It wasn't just yesterday. It happens all the time.

There's this one girl that used to work at Rite- Aid. Won't mention any names, but I haven't seen her there in some time. I'd go in there on a hot summer day. My face beet red from working in the hot sun and my t- shirt damp with sweat. I'm hating it.

She'd always have to say something. Weather was the usual comment: "Isn't it just gorgeous out there today...?". That used to really irk me. I finally had to tell her I wasn't a sun lover and I'd hardly call warm, sunny days gorgeous. She'd sympathize, but next time you'd see her she still say the same thing.

Most everyone else is the same way. On a day like yesterday, it seems most people are walking around commenting about how great the weather is. Whatever.
*************
That said, yesterday did have its bright side, no pun intended. I ran into Babs Francis (of Babbetta's restaurant fame) yesterday. First time I'd seen her in a while.

I was just done mowing a lawn and she was picking up her daughter, Sabrina, next door. It was a pleasure seeing Babs again. Even more of a pleasure when I mentioned that the weather was too hot for me and I was thinking of calling it a day.

She agreed and said she didn't like the warm weather either. We got to talking and she seemed about as bothered by hot weather as I am. I remembered then that her hubby, Stan, is the same way.

How cool (pun intended). Maybe I'm not the loneliest guy in the world.

Well, Fred, you live in the right place, because this hot weather won't last for long. We had some light fog this morning in Loleta. The fog bank will probably be drawn in to Humboldt Bay soon to cool you off. Drink lots of water!

Fred, there's always Little House on the Prairie.

And I'll take fog over sun almost any day.

The fog, overcast, or whatever it was , moved in right as I finished writing the post.

One thing I never understood is why Babetta's is popular. I can't say I like their food or think its special. Yet the parking lot is always packed, and a fair number of people seem to go.

Well, no accounting for tastes, as far as food goes.

I suspect there's two reasons for their popularity: First, Babs, Stan, Sabrina...heck, the whole family is very popular around town and the county. I suspect a lot of people go there just to seem them. Wouldn't you want to go somewhere where everybody knows your name?

Second, I've heard a lot of people say they like to go there for the live music, assuming they still have live music. I haven't been there for some time so I don't know.

I'm not crazy for hot weather either. Some folks think I live in Rio Dell because I don't like SoHum anymore but actually it's escaping the heat and finding rent subsidized housing that landed me in Rio Dell. Hot weather makes me irritable like wasps get when the temperature goes over 95 F. Wanna sting somebody..maybe a Prog or two..

The funny thing is it is never really very hot here. It's a rare day when it goes over 80 degrees. Try the valley where it is 110 for long stretches, like weeks long. Or try new york, where it is 90 through the summer but feels like the most disgusting weather imaginable.

The whole humboldt region actually has very varied weather. Its usually around 70-75 on a good summers day in Eureka, Arcata or Mckinleyville. But go to Blue lake and you will probably be pushing triple digits.

I will have to say that yesterday was the nicest day we have had in Humboldt in a long time...

Nothing like having a beach day for a change...

We all remember last winter so very well, for it is still in our bones.

So people, lets quit complaining all the time and rejoice the sun god for a change.

Great wonders do happen once in a while even though you are expecting the same old song and dance.......

I'm not sure I would want to go where everyone knew my name actually. To a bar? For sure. But sometimes I just want to eat without having to gladhand everyone.

Fred, sounds like you have clinical depression, which is understandable considering the way you live. Take your MediCAL card and get the highest dose available of Prozac or Zoloft. You should feel much better in a few weeks. If you don't, get electroconvulsive shock treatment.

If you are looking for fine Italian food its gotta be Abruzzi's in Arcata.

Thought yesterday was hot but we were going to be gone most of the day so opened a lot of windows and got house aired out and still didn't have to run heat since we got home while it was still about 76 outside and closed up windows. Don't like hot weather.

Neighbor was watering potted plants and said she had to give up on garden work and weeding as it was too hot in the sun to do it.

You are not alone in not liking hot weather. We may not be in the majority but who cares.

2:39 could always turn on oven and sit in front of it and enjoy the hot air blast.

Fred, your blog seems like some sort of cry for help.

Babetta's is also a reflection on Myrtletown. Predominantly working class. When Dennis Bass was well and running Dennis & Geri's Myrtletowne House you could see the same thing. Packed houses nearly every night. I believe the same crowd now dines at Babetta's.

Sometimes the food doesn't matter. But, the social faction matters greatly.

Babetta's crowd is not the Abruzzi clientle. For the same token you won't see Abruzzi's clientle mingling with Babetta's crowd.

Ah, Humboldt.

Growing up in Eastern Humboldt, I saw my share of heat. I prefer to be a fogcrawler or mossback anyday.
I'm with you, Fred. Redding can keep the sun worshipers.

Fred, try this. 4am...outside when its 35 degrees and its starting to drizzle. Its just jou in your sleeping bag and a tarp over that.

That's lonely. You not liking sunny weather? Not so much.

At 12:40 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh good grief - we now have Nick Bravo ---

From what he said SOME ONE could be homless. 35 degrees at 4 AM and its starting to drizzle.

Answer to Nick Bravo:
Hasen't been 35 degrees for a while. Are you sleepig in a cooler? Or maybe you just woke up and crawled out from under your cool rock

Maybe you should go to other blogs as they were talking about "movie stars" and you could join in on those (or not). Duh, I haven't seen your screen rest so . . . Saw someof your U Tubes - get over being a star in Bollywood -

I think Nick was trying to prove a point which you obviously missed.

Nick, try this:

Get A Job or Move to a Warmer Climate. Then you wouldn't have to sleep in the cold.

But then again, most of the homeless are there by personal choice.

At 5:12 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Because Stan is a route driver for Dreyer's Ice Cream.

"Whats with all the removed postings?".

Because they were more irrelevant posts about Nick Bravo, sex and such.
