Ouch! Just noticed the Arcata Eye slammed the People Project- those folks that did that homeless encampment/ demonstration in Arcata.

That is beautifully said. And so true.
Indeed. A well written put down, without being offensive or childish as is often seen in the blogs.
Kevin Hoover is warped, frustrated, young man who craves celebrity so that maybe someday he'll be able to "get some". But he's too ugly even for the Humboldt Honeys living in a "Hooverville". so Hooover specializes in "hiting 'em when they're down". Some on this blog find his endorsement of Worthless DEichmann admirable. That event almost ended Hoover's miserable little fish wrap.
Hoover is absolutely correct. Go talk to 99% of the neighbors in the area of 11th and D or 14th and Union in Arcata where the terrorist blackmailers set up their camp. The PP (the urine analogy is fitting) blathers on about wanting to start a dialogue, but its more like a diatribe. They can find someone who will let them set up ON PRIVATE PROPERTY anywhere they want and camp their little hearts out but that wouldn't be as much fun as sticking it to the man. They want to be allowed to plop their smelly shit anywhere they want and feel special. They're all a bunch of hired out-of-the-area rabble rousers anyway. Kim Star hasn't had anything to do since the last PL protest.
The homeless are too stupid to ask private landowners to give land for a campground in exchange for services.
The anti-capitalist socialist homeless deserve what they get.
As for Hoover, I have suggested to Nick Bravo that he give an interview to the Eye regarding Charles Douglas.
They're all a bunch of hired out-of-the-area rabble rousers anyway.

So Kevin's not allowed to have his own opinion, 4:05? Seems to me it took courage for him to do what he did. He's right on this issue, too. And the real homeless are none too happy with this staged little circus, which only results in trouble for them.
I saw an old woman in Eureka today. She looked like a 'normal' old lady. Except she had a cardboard sign asking for a place to stay.
What the fuck IS going on in this society? Yeah, I think these campers are assholes. But that doesn't negate that they have a point. What are we doing in this wealthy country? Why are the poorer getting poorer and the rich even richer? We have failed as a society. And yeah, it gets much much worse than this.

Kevin only says what everyone is thinking. The silence from the town's regular homeless activists says everything. Arcatans are tired of supporting out-of-town bums. Hell, some of them plainly stated during the council meeting that they've chosen the life they live and they want us to provide them with food and shelter because it's their right. It's not just something conservatives snidely say about the homeless anymore. These folks were admitting it.
They've accomplished only one thing -- guaranteeing that Dave's Campground never gets started.
The activists lost their point before they even opened their mouths. Homeless services of any sort, let alone a campground, are a county issue, not a city issue.
Arcata is still licking its wounds from having mistakenly provided county services for quite a few years. There is a 4-1 majority (or at the very worst, 3-2) on the city council that won't run the city aground again. The activists only strengthened the resolve of voters who elected that majority and likely gained new support from fence straddlers.
Terrorists, or as the infantile Kevin Hoover put it, fascists? That's a little out of whack, don't you think?

The campground is a myth anyways. You will see health issues, rape issues and violence issues. I am sorry, but creating a ghetto with good intentions is still going to get you a ghetto.
The trully homeless like pete and Quarter Mike didn't want anything to do with that herd of unwashed protestors. Nick Bravo was even quoted as saying he didn't want them anywhere near where he sleeps.
Oppressive, dictatorial control? Sounds like fascism to me. Good call Kevin. I may have to pick up that paper sometime. Is it available in Eureka?

Rose, Hoover is entitled to an opinion and I'm entitled to call him a a miserable little sycophant and his rag a worthless piece of fish wrap.
Hoover needs to be given money for his opinion, and since his rag isn't widely circulated he has to select from a small audience. In the little bitty town of Arcata he chooses to appeal to the NIMBYs, but almost lost it when he believed his own rhetoric and endorsed Worthless DEichmann.
Ha! Supporting Gallegos after everything we've learned post-election? Now I know how to evaluate your opinion. I don't know a progressive who is still hot on Gallegos. Give us ANY Democrat to oppose him in the next election and he's outta there. As is, I wish we had Dikeman.
As for the homeless, I loved the guy who spoke before the council, talking at length about how his living houseless was his CHOICE and it was Arcata's responsibility to provide him free food and a free place to sleep.
Umm, no. That's what being houseless means. You chose to have no place to sleep and no food. Deal with your choices. If you find that untenable, try living by society's rules. You're able-bodied and able-minded. You made a choice. We choose not to enable your lifestyle choice. That's called common sense, not NIMBYism. And as far as NIMBY goes, 99% of Arcatans don't want a homeless camp as a neighbor. The few loons who welcome it will be NIMBYers within a year of its establishment. But again, it won't happen. This little publicity stunt sank any chance of a dignity village. Arcata's real homeless advocates are fuming at the destruction brought to their cause.

Rose, don't bother. When all someone can do is sling schoolyard insults, they aren't worth your time, or anyone's time.
All I know is that I was gone for awhile, I come back to Arcata, and there was a pile of homeless bums on the city council building's yard telling me that I should give them money to live the life they want to live.

interesting Eye article...K pooh-poohs the idea that Arcata's anti-camping ban violates the constitutional rights of those who have no legal place to sleep, even though federal court (9th Circuit court of Appeals) has ruled that it is indeed unconstituitonal to prevent those who don't have a legal place to sleep from sleeping on public land (see Jones v. Los Angeles, April 2006). I know that Kevin knows about this federal court decision, he did a brief article about it some time after it happened. Yet he simply leaves out any mention this inconvenient truth. There are other cases, even two local instances where the anti-sleeping in public ordinance has been succesfully challenged on constituional grounds in Arcata.
I hope that one of the so-called protestors does sue Arcata and make them stop abusing the constitutional rights of the shelterless.
and by the way, this is not just an Arcata thing.

Kevin Hoover did a very good job on this issue. Personal responsibility is not just for the other guy. As a concerned member of a truly caring and compassionate community I try every day to do a good job at my work and help others in many different ways. So does the vast majority of us. I have no respect or sympathy for people who rip us all off for their own selfish interests. Worse than that is the waist of resources that I want to go to people who not only need but deserve our help. The travelers who are living the life can only continue their destructive path if we continue to enable them. That must stop. On this one Kevin your spot on. Dennis Mayo

They do such an inept job of advocating on behalf of the homless you'd almost think they were thought up by some right-wing property right group in some clandestine operation to undermine public support for the homeless.

to fred: you said " So...people should be able to sleep wherever they want?" ...well, that was never the issue. The issue is, first of all, about public property (the city's property in this case). But more importantly, it is about the allocation of resources and the priorities of public-money decision makers all over. Why do we get newer fancier baseball fields and golf courses while some people have nowhere to sleep? Why do we throw away so much food everyday while people go hungry? Why do federal grant monies intended to help the poor and homeless end up paying for SUV's and homes in gated communities?
If the goal of activism is to win people over to your side, Then the People Project is a disaster. They alienated far more people than they won over. Lots of people in Arcata were inclined to be sympathetic to the cause , However the Putrid Project just crapped on them , literally.
The organizers of this boondoogle are idiots.
The cops didn't play along and beat the shit out of them as they'd hoped. No lawsuit for you!

I agree with Bravo the antics Panhandling Plazoid Posturing Pajama Party Project has probably made things more difficult for the truly needy in Arcata.

Most developmentally disabled people are admirable enough.
While they may not be blessed with formidble intellectuall gifts, they do the best they can within the context of their limitations.
They certainly don't deserve to be slurred by being compared to those obnoxius sluggards camping at City Hall last week.

This possibility ran through my mind when I read Kevin's well-written article. It seemed so staged.
