Something's Missing Here

I don't get it. Why would Fortuna and Arcata be diverting less trash from the landfills than Eureka? It says here that Arcata's been diverting over 50% since 2003 and Fortuna's been diverting 60% since 2005. Why would Eureka fall behind?

I can't help but think it's more than just the collection process in Eureka. I'm wondering if it's because more people use the Eureka transfer station for things they can't do in either Arcata or Fortuna, although I have no idea what those things might be.

I know Fortuna has Eel River Disposal to dump trash at, but don't the Arcata garbage trucks dump their loads in Eureka? Hmmm... I wonder if some statistics are being manipulated here?

MY SUGGESTION:

Make recycling a bit easier. Eureka has two disadvantages when you are comparing to Fortuna and Arcata. Fortuna has higher percentage of people who take pride in their homes and their community than Eureka. Eureka has those icky areas where no one can manage their lives. Their trash and recyclables end up all together, wherever. Also, many of my friends in Eureka just do not recycle- too lazy? It's not encouraged like Arcata? Arcata just has a green attitude, and going to the rwecycling center there or in McKinleyville are just easier than go to the dump and its (nice) recylcling area. Some people just don't go down to Broadway- don't like the area. Most of the neighborhood recycling bins have been removed also. Lastly, I would recycle more if I didn't live in the county- I don;t have pick-up here. Garbage pickup should include a day for recycling, and people should not have to separate it- who has room for 8 bins at their house? I give up occasionally and trash it all, even though it makes me feel guilty. They should only have two pickups- ALL TRASH, and ALL RECYCLING, and they can put it on conveyer belts and separate it themselves, and more accurately. Also, people throw awar good stuff that good be sold or reused. There should be a place at the dump for "good items" and people could go and get them- if they don't get picked up they could go into the regular garbage. These are ways that I see that too much soloid waste ends up in the landfill from my own home.

I really wonder just how much volume is saved by recycling. Not that it isn't saved, it just seems to me other things take up most of the space. The news article mentions building materials. That's a lot of it. I hate seeing all the lumber and such being dumped.

I believe there's some guy in Arcata, or thereabouts, that chops up stuff like old roofing material and uses it for stuff. Read about it in one of the local papers a while back. Why don't they just take all the roofing stuff to him?

And take all the old lumber to one of the wood fired power plants around here. Don't we have a few of those; Blue Lake, Scotia, Fairhaven?

I had a lot of metal piping and aluminum ceiling materials that Arcata Scrap and Salvage PAID ME for, and I was happy to have a place to dump it. They are the most amazing place, on South G, Arcata. They don't pay for everything, but will take a lot of metal items (I don't know about wood) for free or even pay, depending on the metal. Copper is high priced! I know someone who got a lot of cash for some copper wire.

Eureka's City Garbage recycling center accepts scrap metal but I don't believe they pay you for it.

And copper is expensive. So much so that people are going around stealing it.

Yes, I think all of the recycling centers will accept scrap metal, but if you have a lot from a building site like I did, they refer you to the salvage yard, where they will weigh your truck/pickup or just let you dump it off.
