E/R Does Myrtletown.net

Kudos to Myrtletown.net for getting themselves on the front page of today's Eureka Reporter.

Of course, the wi- fi network they've set up in Myrtletown isn't really news to those of us who frequent the Humboldt blogosphere. Nonetheless, I did find the story of interest as it described how the network was put together. Sounds like a fun project to be involved in.

As for myself, if someone set up a wi- fi network in my neighborhood, I think I'd still prefer my trusty old hard line dsl.

The Humboldt Hotspots web site was mentioned, as well, that site being run by the folks at Myrtletown.net, if memory serves me correct. I'd been a bit disappointed in that site as it didn't seem like it was being updated very often.

Some time ago I noticed that Dave's Place, in Eureka's Henderson Center, had a sign out front saying they were a wi- fi hotspot. I'd sent notice of that to Humboldthotspots but never saw it added to the list. Just checked and I see they've added it.

Good to see the site's still active.

Thanks for the support, Fred! I want to be clear, however, that Myrtletown.net has no involvement with Humboldthotspots.com, however we do think it's an excellent idea and a great web site. I do recall, though, that I had to submit the Myrtletown hotspot to them at least twice before it was finally included on their map. I get the impression that they actually go out and confirm that the hotspot exists and works before adding it to their list, which is a good policy to have.

Also, Dave's Place rules. I don't make it over their often, but I always enjoy it when I do.

Dave's place, hmmm, funny I've never been in there but go right by it all the time. The place doesn't seem all that welcoming but from what I understand, the owners are very nice people.Seemed that it used to get a good crowd for their Monday night hotdog special,I wonder if that's still the same.Pine Hill needs a nice bar so that I can walk or bike to and fro.
And I'd wonder if Dave's place is the only hotspot in that area, when I used to have a laptop months back,I was able to connect while waiting for some laundry over at the Henderson Center laundromat.
So just how far can a connection reach?

I believe it depends on our they're set up, and what kind of equipment you use and where.

I know I've often found all kinds of wireless connections with my laptop but I can't connect to the vast majority of them.

I believe even home wireless connections go a bit outside the boundary of the home. I connected to one open one in San Francisco. It was a residential area so I couldn't imagine it being anything but someone's unsecured home network.

As far as Dave's Place, I might have been in there some thirty years ago when it was under a different owner, and that was just to deliver a pizza (at the time Sabrina's was the only place in town that delivered).

I'd love to have a nice neighborhood watering hole, but Dave's Place is another one of those dark bars with no windows, if memory serves me correct. I like well lit places with windows.

Don't know of any such places in Eureka, much less within walking distance of my house.

One place I did like was Hot Brew in Fortuna. Expensive way to drink, though.

One thing I was wondering about is hotels and motels in the county. I don't see any listed on humboldthotspots and I'm sure some local places must offer free wireless (or hard line dsl). I'm not sure that I've seen many of our local lodging places advertise such, though.

I know the Days Inn in Novato has a big banner readable from the freeway advertising it as a wireless or internet hotspot. Anyone seen any of our local places advertising?

Hey I just passed there a few minutes ago.I'll take you up at another time. This house backs up to the property which sits behind the church. The sound of those geese is something else at times. As a matter of fact I can see the newly installed cell phone tower from where I type.
And apparently Fred does(probably did,I should say) some gardening for the couple whom now used to live on the corner of Madison and Union, unfortunately they lost their home in a fire as you probably recall. We'll all have to congregate at some time.

No, I just did occasional work for the people whose house burned down (they're rebuilding now, btw).

I do the house next door to them and the one across Madison from them.
