Eureka Gas Highest?

Just noticed this story in the business section of the Times- Standard. It quotes a AAA press release and says we're tied with Chicago for having the highest gas prices in the country.

What I don't get is, using the AAA's own gas price finder web site, I find San Francisco gas ranges between $3.18 to $3.90 a gallon with an average price of $3.51. Compared to Eureka's average of $3.42, I'd say San Francisco's looks more expensive than ours, on average.
*******
Hmm... I just went to the gas finder web site again to get the url and noticed the prices had changed just in the time I wrote the above. Now the higher price has dropped to $3.80 and the average price is $3.46. That's still higher than what the Times- Standard reported for Eureka but the price for Eureka gas might well have changed on the AAA site since the story was written.

Durng the early to mid 90's the Humboldt County DA's Office did a "price fixing" investigation against local (Humboldt) gas providers ...... a local judge tossed the case ! The case had merit but .......... corruption? The "good ole boy" system ?

This is Humboldt County, what can you expect.

When we were on the east coast, folks were complaining about gas prices being $2.99/gallon. I shut them up by telling them we have been paying close to $3.50/gallon in California.

It's $2.95 at Safeway in Redding.

One attempt was made to prosecute gasoline distributors in Fortuna who were pretty obviously not the main problem around here. The case collapsed, but the DA at the time got credit for trying. Hmmm.

Not one politician or DA has attempted to prosecute the local (Eureka) gasoline distribution cartel that has kept our prices too high for too long. And for some reason, We the People have not held anybody accountable for this ongoing highway robbery.

There's your problem in a nutshell. Nobody will go to the source of the problem (price-fixing) and fix it by prosecuting the price-fixers.

I imagine we Eurekans will be bitching and moaning about our highest-in-the-nation gasoline prices for a hundred years because it doesn't look as if anything is ever going to change.

I don't know about that. Seems to me Congressdude Mike Thompson tried to do something about "zone pricing"- that practice of charging some areas higher prices than others. I read something about him saying it didn't go anywhere. I assume the powers- that- be told him that was ground he dare not tread on.

I think that might be more of an issue, as opposed to some local conspiracy. Back when I had a retirement account, my stock dude at Dean Witter commented that Renner could buy gasoline from some other source but for some reason wouldn't. The stock dude knew about such business stuff.

I also ran into a guy at the Renner card lock station who told me knew Renner and asked him himself about it. Renner explained it was something along the line of a cartel where, if you were in certain areas, you bought your gas from certain sources and that's just the way it was.

Sounded like it wasn't so much that local sources were fixing prices but their source was setting a high price and it wasn't considered right, in the gas business anyway, to go to a different source.
Strange things going on there.

Yes. Strange indeed how whichever way Renner explains it, it always puts more money into his pocket.

Isn't gasoline brought to Humboldt by barge?

At 9:10 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

I just called Renner Petroleum and they confirmed that it usually is brought in by barge. The exception being if seas are too rough or the tide too low. The Coast Guard has restrictions on the conditions that gasoline can be brought into Humboldt Bay.

When it's too rough, or whatever, gas is trucked in.

Costco trucks its gas here. The week before Costco opened its tanks, gas prices in Eureka dropped 25 cents... but Costco's price still undercut the competition by another 25 cents.

The way I see it, Costco's presence saves all Eurekans 25 cents a gallon, and Costco members effectively save 50 cents a gallon over how we would be bilked if Costco didn't exist.

That there's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.

If you watch closely, you'll see Colvin oil trucks picking up gas in Eureka. They truck it all the way to Grants Pass and Medford. They then sell it for 35 to 50 cents a gallon less than what we pay.

10:46 had the REAL point.

Just like the rest of the USA and the war, health care, etc.

They keep doing it to us because they CAN!- and we arent making enough noise to make them change.

Time to step on some politicians people!

Why would they do that? The fuel blend is different from California fuel and Oregon fuel.

And don't you know it. King has followed those trucks to Medford and seen the gas sold for ".35-.50 cents below what we pay." Only a "progressive" idiot would buy that bulls**t without coroberation.

Only a duped conservative would misspell corroboration.

If you can't spend five minutes to compose a thoughtful message, why should I give you my precious time?

Corroboration.

Be serious, or don't talk to me.

Oregon gas taxes are 15.3 cents less than California, according to the API, 3/07. I'd guess Oregon wages, property taxes and employee benefits cost less than California, although not much lower than HumCo's.

9:52, your time certainly must not be too terribly "precious" as you seem to be spending your time blogging with the rest of us.

However, from your post, which is not really laced with anything resembling a "thoughtful message", It's tough to see exactly who you are trying to insult, which should lead you to look straight into the mirror.

OK 7:41, take your blogspam and go home. Stop spending your time insulting people.

What's wrong 6:47, a little to close to the truth there?

Go ahead. Misspell all your words. You may not think it diminishes the effectiveness of your writing, but it does. A person who points that out to you is doing you a favor. People who don't give a damn about you won't say a thing when they notice spelling and grammar errors that make you appear uneducated.

Dude, MY orginal point, (and I am not the original offending misspeller) was that if you are going to hold spelling as a big ticket item as to veracity and effectiveness of posts in the blogosphere, while ignoring points made, then you will at some point or another, be ignoring EVERYONE, including yourself.

The blogosphere is a rapid, thread based form of discourse, and as points are quickly made, spelling sometimes go by the wayside.

Trying to discount the question originally made, in which the poster was asking for corroboration
of the wild claim that the same gas was being shipped up to Oregon and being sold much more cheaply than here, just because the word was misspelled, shows a much greater lack of intelligence than a simple misspelling...

(and yes, I realize that thar are probably some misspelled wurdz heare)...but you know what, the point has been validly made, lack of spelling corrections notwithstanding.
