American Kestrels?
These neat birds used to be called Sparrow Hawks. Some yuppies, twenty or thirty years ago, decided to change the name to American Kestrel.Now why would they want to go do something like that? If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it.

Fred, the American Kestrel has never correctly been called a Sparrowhawk.
"Sparrowhawk" is a broad term covering 19 species of hawk in the genus Accipiter. The American Kestrel and Nankeen Kestrel, also in the same genus, are sometimes called Sparrowhawks by people who don't know better.
Funny that you blame yuppies though.
I think sometimes the pics get hung up somehow and you have to wait a little while for them. I've had that happen on other blogs.

Didn't the bird books call them sparrow hawks thirty or so years ago? Seems to me they did, but maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Dammit, if there was a Libertarian in the White House, these sorts of things wouldn't happen. I bet it was that SOB Carter who renamed the bird.
