Haunted Houses in Humboldt

Anybody know of any supposedly haunted houses in Humboldt? It would be interesting to see if these guys, the North Coast Ghost Hunters, have a list of houses they think are haunted. When you think about it, that might make a good book, especially if the history of the house that led to the haunting was included.

I know of one house some said was haunted, and one that might of been:

The first one was the old Scarpellino house on K street, in Eureka. Heading south, just past Hodgson, it was the third or fourth on the right. I think the number was like 3325, but I could be wrong. If anyone's interested, let me know. It wouldn't take much for me to go by and get the number.

Supposedly, the upstairs was haunted there. A number of the Scarpellino's friends used to stay up on the top floor. I believe the upstairs was actually the bedroom of Barry Scarpellino himself.

According to "legend", one of them woke up one night to see someone, or some apparition, looking down at one of the other guys while he was sleeping. I don't remember if the apparition disappeared, or what. Just telling you what I remember.

I believe there were also stories of someone being seen in the upstairs window by people on the street, except no one was upstairs at the time.

I know, not much to go on. I never saw anything weird up there myself. But I did go up there at least a couple times back in those days and got a weird feeling from that room. Don't know if I was just creeped out by the stories or maybe something really was present there.

The second one is the house I live in now. I don't know that we've felt any presence in some time, but the first few years after we moved in we did.

I'd sometimes be in the house and feel like someone was in the room with me. Sometimes I'd feel a fairly strong presence and maybe even think I saw an image of something out of the corner of my eye.

I finally mentioned it to the wifey and she said she'd also felt a presence on occasion. In fact, she told me one time, while she was upstairs, she felt someone was in the room and felt something tugging at the back of her shirt. NOW THAT'S CREEPY!

Seems to me, though, I haven't sensed anything in the house for at least ten years. The wife hasn't mentioned anything along that line for some time, either. Maybe we were just creeped out, being relative newcomers to this house, or maybe whatever it was finally left. I don't know.

Sure, I hear strange noises every now and then, but those are nearly always rats, or some other critter, but I don't know that we can attribute those early feelings of a presence to just rats. After all, if rats were tugging on the back of your shirt, wouldn't you know the rats were the ones doing it?

Anyone else know of any possible haunted houses?

I lived in a local house that was haunted severely. Enough to make this skeptic a believer. I even spoke to former tenants who confirmed my suspicions before I brought the subject up.

The house is the old Bayside post office. It's just west of the current one one Old Arcata Rd. Built as one room in 1880, and added onto ever since. The upstairs bedroom with the window facing the road and pastures is severely haunted. I lost two friends to it in less than a year. Beware renters. (the rest of the house seems ok, and we had no more problems after we locked the door and tossed the key.)

I'll post the whole story if I have time and folks are interested.

There's a house on McKinleyville Avenue where a fellow butchered some family members about 100 or so years ago.

Someone said it was haunted, so therefore it is. Right?

Uh oh. My house was started in 1880, too. Might this be a common link?

Oh, I'll have to ask Connie but, seems to me, most of the "encounters" I might of had were upstairs, as well. Perhaps another common link?

and, "I'll post the whole story if I have time and folks are interested.".

Sounds like fun to me, but if the story is real, real long, maybe you could just send it to me and I could put it up on a web page and link to it here. Otherwise, people reading the comments might have to scroll down forever to get to the later ones, should they want to.

Jack wrote, "Someone said it was haunted, so therefore it is. Right?".

Who knows?

And some say that ghosts/ spirits can be removed from houses, too, just like they say in that Eureka Reporter story. Some might well be hoaxes.

We've all seen The Amityville Horror, right. Someone was telling me they watched some TV show featuring the people that moved in to that house after the people who were spooked had fled the house. The new residents said it was just a normal house and nothing weird was going on there.

I would love to hear more about that first post of the haunted post office. This stuff just freaks me out but I'm still strangely intrigued. Great post!

Lived in a house in Myrtletown behind the wine palace. Our cat (Black) would always end up in this closet in the hallway with the light on. No way in and out.....It happened so often that we would hear the cat meowing and just open the door and turn out the light. And you could feel this persons in around the house. I was telling people at work, and it just so happened a person there was related to the people who owned the place. I guess their son died and was hanging around. Weird. And no, I did not believe in ghosts. But after letting my cat out of a closet many times and having to turn out the light, something is out there.

You and me both. It's especially interesting when it's local.

More likely a missing link, Fred.

Had a friend who rented a place on Essex Lane (I think) - they had a lot of problems, and someone came to the door and told them that she was psychic and had been sent to tell them to get out. Then strange things started happening - cupboard doors opening and all the dishes being thrown around the room. That's what I remember her talking about, though there was alot more detail. They didn't stay.

That comment about the missing link was just stupid. Please delete it, Fred!

Well...I'm not sure just what he meant by it. I suspect it might have been intended as an insult, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since it's unclear what he's saying.

Maybe he was trying to be funny?
No harm done, in any case, so I'll leave it up.

#13 Fenwick in Samoa is haunted! I worked with an Electrician at LP Pulp named Randy Roberts and helped him move from this place and he told me about a young lady who roamed the house and gave negative energy. Randy was very convincing, but I was skeptical. I later worked at LP Particlebord and a fellow worker needed a ride to Samoa. I gave him a ride and he said I could drop him off on the corner of Vance and Fenwick. When I stopped to let him off on the corner I asked him what address he lived at. He told me #13 Fenwick. I must have looked weird to him as he told me, "My house is haunted isn't it!" I don't know how he came to this conclusion, but I just let him out and was suffering from the creeps for awhile afterward.

I am a part of a local group that has a very high interest in the paranormal. We have the equipment and knowledge for finding proof of a possible haunting. We would love to come and check out these hauntings as well as maybe help you with the knowledge we have. If you are interested please email me at laresad82@yahoo.com.

My grandparent's house is definitely haunted! It's the pink one on the 2000 block of H Street (two blocks away from Eureka High School)and I think it was built in the 1800's. Some of our family members as well as the housekeeper has seen some weird things there. When I was a kid in the 70's/80's we'd go over for Christmas every year and hang out in the attic, which had been turned into a sort of studio apartment which could be accessed from stairs in the bedroom just off the kitchen. We'd get finished up there, turn off the light, then start down the stairs and the light would turn on again, and nobody was up there! A couple of years ago I stayed there for a few weeks and on several nights "something" shook the bed, waking me up. Also, on one occasion, I woke up to the sound of an animal walking around and looked and saw a dog. My grandfather has a dog but it's scared of people and never leaves his side, and this dog looked nothing like his. I turned on the lamp by the bedside and it was gone. And that was pretty much the last time I ever went up there. My grandmother and a dog they used to have both died in the house so it's possible that they're part of the haunting.

Benbow Inn is haunted. This house that my parents use to own up on Kneeland is haunted too. Oh yeah, and my house is haunted. And Target is haunted too.
A maid hung herself on the fourth floor in Benbow Inn.
I was pushed by "nothing" at my parents old house.
The house I live in now, is very active. Things happen all the time, and I've learned to dismiss them. My friends daughter said she was playing patty cake with something under the kitchen sink. I saw a man standing in my hall way... Twice. The door in the kitchen likes to come unlatched and open on its own. There is a lady that likes to wake me up in the morning by talking or saying how cold she is. But hey, its home.
In Target, there is a little girl that turns on the coffee pot and turns off the dishwasher, and tonight is the first night she turned it on right in front of me. There is supposedly an old man in domestics (the section in the back of the store where the curtains and beding is). He likes to take things off the racks. Someone else had a bag of candy thrown at them.

Moved to a house On Harris street by the water tower almost 10 years ago august.

Since the first months we moved in, in my room you can hear whispers in your ear, and much more.

I have heard them, my girlfriend, and at least 4-5 friends.

Some heard there names, my girlfriend while trying to sleep was yelled at. I discovered if you acknowledge them when it happens they stop.

I say they, because I literally have heard conversations, with music and not 21st century music. I am talking wind up record player music. Freaked me out so Friggin bad.

I have had light switches literally in my room just flip on, not like a light flickering, a loose bulb, nothing like that, I literally watched and heard the switch flip outta the corner of my eye

and thats all that happened until this year. While trying to nap recently about 3 months ago.

I was awoken to the most high pitched female scream I have ever heard in my life, and these toys/collectible things I have on my TV called Dunny's were spread out in front of a door about 5-6 feet away. I literally was out of my room and on the other side of the house is 2 seconds.

But ever since then really nothing much else has happened, its really really creepy, it has turned me on to everything paranormal/well ghosts.

My girlfriend thinks w/e it is, is attached to me, That's why it messes with her when she sleeps at my house.

I literally gobble up everything i hear about ghosts, documentary, everything ever since....its kinda wierd

I know people read this stuff and don't believe it, but I promise you all this was one of the craziest moments of my life, I will never forget it

Fairly recently, late October of 2009, I was at the former Longs Drugs, now CVS Pharmacy, with my mother. We were standing in the first or second check out line when a man walked up to me. He had a shaved head and a medical gown and mask on. He was very pale and he had bloodshot eyes, he looked really sick. He was standing a few feet away from me and was picking things off the ground. I was throughly freaked out and pretended not to see him. Here's the cliche, when I asked my mom about it, she claimed to see nothing.

Update to the pink house on the 2000 block of H Street in Eureka...it burned down April of 2009 and a new house is being built (although my grandfather, due to his dementia, likely won't be returning). I'm interested in finding out if the new place will have the same strange activity as the old place since it's the same location. I'm curious if ghostly activity is tied in with just the house, or if it's the grounds themselves. House should be finished by April 2010 at the very latest.

Orick School. I was messing around one night when I was younger, and wandered into the open area of the school. I heard foot steps running around the corner, when I rounded the corner no one was there. I turned to leave and was told to get out by nothing I could see.

I lived at 1776 Waters Ave in McKinleyville- a little old house, and I don't know the history of it, but would be very interested. I would wake up to see images of a person floating up and away from me. However, the only actual physical thing that ever happened was 1 day I was sitting on the edge of my bed and the doorknob of the bathroom started turning back and forth...I stared at it...thinking "hmmm....that is really weird"...I really want to go back there and ask the people who live there now if they experienced any strange happenings. I would love to talk to any 'ghost hunters' in the Humboldt area...contact my email if you are willing to talk to me. schaefer@sisqtel.net. Thanks!

When I lived in Arcata, I had an office in the building over the Golden Harvest Cafe, which is very haunted by a ghost who hates loud music. Doors would open and close by themselves (locked doors!), and the kitchen crew were terrorized by flying cutlery when the techno music was played after the customers went home. I was sometimes working in there at night, and my office door open and I would feel and presence in the room, and then it would open the door again and depart. I got used to it, but one man had an office there and left all his stuff behind in it, he was too scared to come back again.

Silverside Motel in Fields Landing is said to be haunted. I stayed there for several nights a while back and there was conversation about the Motel being haunted and multiple people passing away at the location, I found the stories believable and interesting, does anyone have details regarding haunting at the Silverside or in Fields Landing? Thank You. It seems there are a lot of spirits active in this county.

Hi all, I own and operate Old Town Eureka Haunted History Tours. We have many stories describing the Haunted History of Old Town. So many in fact that I wonder if per capita Eureka may be one of the most haunted places on the West Coast.

I have a friend in Eureka who lives on the corner of Hodgson and O st. From what he knows, his grandfather is a survivor from the woodley island massacre. in their house, he and his friends have had weird paranormal experiences. they have recordings of voices and noises that they had not been able to hear themselves. they have seen a figure of a man get up in the middle of the room and walk through the wall where a door used to be. They all decided to go into separate rooms of the basement as well... in the back room of the basement our friend's name was being called while he was back there. The recording caught it, but he could not hear it himself. Then things started being moved around and he became frightened and left the room. In another room there were quite a few native dolls, possibly voodoo, found buried behind what it looks to be another wall, or a half wall. My boyfriend said he had seen a creature figure that was tall and HUGE. I can't remember how he described it, but it was freaky. Then when they left the camera down stairs and left the basement to go upstairs, the camera (fully charged) started dying rapidly. There was a ticking noise and the sound of heavy footsteps running super quickly up and down the basement stairs.

I was staying at the Benbow Inn during this last week of February 2013 and taking photos outside when my camera lost its charge only after a few shots of the Full Moon the night before(the batteries were newly put in)
The next morning I wanted to take some more.. I immediately put in new batteries and took a couple photos of the early morning fog sitting in the basin with the sunrise...when the camera's batteries went dead AGAIN! I was really looking forward to taking some of the lobby etc.. to possibly catch some orbs or something, but obviously the ghosts had another idea. No more pics for me.

I used to work at the Benbow Inn in the early 90s. The 3rd and 4th floors are indeed haunted. I was cleaning a bathroom once, when an older man in a striped button up and glasses walked into the hotel room and past the bathroom. I saw him in the mirror so I walked out into the main part of the room to speak to him, and there was no one there. No one in the hall, or even anywhere on the 3rd floor at that time...On two separate occasions, my vacuum turned on without being plugged in. Something fought with me when I tried to open the door that the carts hide behind in the hallway of the 3rd floor. In the 90s the 4th floor had already been abandoned as hotel rooms and was being used as storage. There was always noise up there even though no one was known to be up there....
