Easy Elections

Randy Cassingham, This Is True

I have removed the main message on this post. The guy that
runs this "This Is True" mailer, that I gave a plug to,
seems to be -a certifiable nut case. I haven't seen
anything this weird since
I've been online.

I was going to post the message he sent to our very own
Leonidas, but he seems to know how to screw up the
formatting so it can't be used, or pasted on this blog.

I'd like to see him shut down. Any suggestions?

Here's an idea. I added his name to the top of this post.
Maybe the search engines will pick up on it and when folks
do a search for him or his web site, they'll be sent here.

Better alert Local Solutions. That town is in deep do-do with the progressive fire and fury.

For a while I thought it was the same in Humboldt County as Supervisors just can't get voted out.

Hi Fred!

I read your comments in an article in the Eureka Reporter regarding the FISA vote. I agree with you, Mr. Pro-tem Libertarian Party Chair!

I'm surprised that someone who claims to be a Libertarian would steal the intellectual property of someone else. I refer to the story I wrote, which you published verbatim -- without getting, let alone even bothering to ask for, permission to do so. My copyright notice, which is included with every newsletter, is quite clear on the subject, too.

I'm not going to come in here blustering about my rights, demand that you take it down, threaten to sic lawyers on you, etc. -- even though federal law makes it clear I can do all of those things. I simply wish to call your attention to your own ideals of responsibility and respect for others that Libertarianism demands; you preach the faith, but when it comes time for you to live up to them yourself, you fail. Hypocrisy doesn't make a compelling argument for political change.

You were too lazy to go find my source (which I identify) and write your OWN summary of the story, and then write your OWN comment about it. Instead, you ignore my clear requests (and rights) and steal my work for your site. Note that linking to the source does NOT exonerate the crime of copyright infringement. But of course, you already knew that -- both because it's been the law your entire life AND because that's the Libertarian ideal.

YAY LIBERTARIANS! Respect others -- unless you're too lazy to! That IS the message you're sending.

I will, however, give you one point if you have the guts to leave it posted -- WITH this comment included.

Gee. I guess including a link to the This Is True web site isn't good enough. I didn't realize the guy was such an asshole.

Carol wrote, "I agree with you, Mr. Pro-tem Libertarian Party Chair!".

Some real hard- hitting commentary, huh?

I was beginning to think they weren't going to run that story. The reporter called me a few days ago. I thought he said they'd run it Friday or Saturday.

You replied: "Gee. I guess including a link to the This Is True web site isn't good enough."

I already covered that: "Note that linking to the source does NOT exonerate the crime of copyright infringement. But of course, you already knew that -- both because it's been the law your entire life AND because that's the Libertarian ideal." You set yourself up as an example of Libertarianism, and you don't grasp this very basic concept?

Then, realizing you were caught not living up to YOUR OWN standards, standards you expect others to live up to, you launched into name-calling. As I said: not a very compelling example of how to be a Libertarian.

Asshole, maybe. But at least I live up to my own standards. I'm astounded that you don't even TRY to practice what you preach.

For some reason I just don't see how Fred attacked any libertarian principle by doing what he did.Maybe"this is true" or Fred,or someone else could enlighten me.

Fred,
You have just been "educated" in the difference between "plagiarism" and copyright infringement. It is doubtful this guy earns much in the way of cash from his website, but publishing on the web is an invitation to infringement and obviously most "artists" are pleased to get a plug as long as you don't try to commercialize it. In this instance the most appropriate phrase he should copyright is: "I am a complete Asshole".

At 1:40 PM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

I think he's trying to say I essentially stole his property (something he researched and used in his mailer) because I didn't get his permission to use something he sent out in his mailer, in spite of the fact I didn't try to suggest it was my own piece and gave him a plug.

I suspect he's more upset that it was used on a blog owned by a libertarian since I actually plugged his web site and e-mail list in a nice manner. Most people I know WANT people to advertise their web sites and related wares. He seems to not want him or work work related in any way to a libertarian or the Libertarian Party.

He might also be one of those types that gets upset with any violation of any rule, even if that violation goes against the spirit of the law.

The kind of folks that know their neighbor went on a two week vacation but call the vehicle abatement folks to haul of their car that's parked on the street for the two weeks the neighbor is gone.
"Hey....the law is the law...Vehicles can't be parked more more than 72 hours in the same spot". Never mind that such foolishness can come back to bite them in the ass sometime later on.

Not that kind of person I'd want to be hanging with. What a jerk. I should probably pull the excerpt and any reference to This Is True from this post and just use this post to bash him. I've already gone far enough with that, though.

Fred and readers,
I have sent the following comment to Mr. Cassingham's blog comment. I doubt that he will approve it for publication but here it is:

Dear Dr(?). Cassingham,
I have not applied for membership in mensa although I am technically qualified and I apologize in advance for this off topic comment. Your attack on the Libertarian Fred Mangels is justified from a de jure standpoint for his reproduction of an article from your "news letter".

I could countenance such an attack and its implied threat of civil action if Mr. Mangels was attempting to profit from said reproduction of your copy-righted material but such is not the case. You were credited and linked in this instance and for all practical purposes any sentient being would (should?) be flattered.

As that is not the case, we are forced to conclude that you are either mentally challenged or suffer from liberophobia, a common leftist malady. In any event you may rest assured that your website will neither be quoted nor recommended by either my self or my readers on Eternity Road.

Let me put your mind at ease, Fred. When those bothersome neighbors report your vehicles while you are on vacation, they can't really do you much harm.

The police department is required to issue a whole series of tickets BEFORE it has the offending vehicle towed away.

Chances are good you will have plenty of time to straighten out the police department (and your neighbor) when you return from your vacation.

That's not the point. It shouldn't have to get to this point in the first place.

The guy is a dumbass. He has ads by Google on his site and any new traffic is likely to bring him income. Your quoting him and linking to him generates traffic and new readers, some of whom may come back, and become regular readers of his, possibly even putting up links to him on their own sites... traffic boosting is the name of the game.

Besides that, though, he bills himself as a "Colorado humorist " which only goes to show you that funny guys often hide a pent up anger filled personality.

He owes you a major apology.

Randy Cassingham is a _________ fill in the blank. Dumbass, I think.

Here's a tip for Mr. True:
Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

☛ Write at least five major “pillar” articles.
☛ Write one new blog post per day minimum.
☛ Use a proper domain name.
☛ Start commenting on other blogs.
☛ Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts.
☛ Encourage comments on your own blog.
☛ Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival.
☛ Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com.
☛ Submit your articles to Ezine Articles.
☛ Write more pillar articles.

Learn more at this site: one cool site: wordpress blogging tips (Note: SHE quotes and links back to this guy... The Internet Summit - The worst kept secret on the Internet who elaborates on all of those points and says this It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called "traction", which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

And let's add one more to the list - WELCOME people who quote you and link to you. Reciprocate.

Oh. I forgot. Libertarians don't believe in law enforcement. Or do Libertarians believe each person has the right to ignore whichever laws they don't personally like? (Or is it the Anarchists who believe that?)

Now, Fred, just answer my questions. I already know you think I am an asshole, but you don't have to tell the whole world about it again!

At 5:33 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Yeah. I don't believe in law enforcement. I also love Dave Gundersen.

You know, since I live on the North Coast and have had an interest in Libertarianism (having grown weary of both Democratic and Republican free spending on my children's money), I've been coming here to learn about a rational third way.

Now I discover that you're just like any other politician: you lie, cheat, and steal, and when you're called on it you go on the attack, calling people names and further victimizing those you steal from. And then you encourage your sycophants to attack your victim more by posting off-topic comments to your victim's blog.

What a hypocrite! YOU ARE WRONG, FRED, and no blustering or obfuscation of the basic facts here will change that.

I was particularly amazed by your contention that Mr. Cassingham's work is not worth anything because surely he doesn't make any money from his web site. What a self-serving load of crap: the thief doesn't set the price of what he steals, the rightful owner does. The guy has been written up by the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, and dozens of other national and international publications. I doubt your site has been mentioned even by the Times-Standard. I think I can guess which one of you is actually making an honest living off his web site. But that's not the point: your ridiculous and transparent justification of your theft is. You've left me with zero respect for you and the Humboldt County Libertarian Party.

Rather than be swayed by your typical-politician spin efforts, I actually went to Mr. Cassingham's site last night and spent some time reading what he had to say (thanks, at least, for the link!). When I finally looked up again, more than four hours had passed. His clear and logical presentation of various issues (such as gun rights, religious freedom, and his amazing dissection of PETA) are right on -- exactly the Libertarian ideal as I understand them. Yet you have the gall to insinuate that Mr. Cassingham is some sort of pinko anti-Libertarian, and you've been reading his work for some time?! What a disgusting liar you are: I have no interest in EVER reading your site again. I not only have subscribed to Mr. Cassingham's newsletter, I've gone for the paid edition to help make up for how you have wronged him, and I will work hard to promote his work for the same reason.

And NOW you are working to "have him shut down"? Because he had the gall to call you on your theft?

You have stained the Libertarian ideal with your selfish, self-serving, illegal, immoral, and reprehensible conduct. You should be ashamed -- and so should your non-thinking supporters. I'm re-registering as an Independent. I want nothing to do with your kind again.

Interesting we got a visit from a certain someone in Denver, Colorado about the same time that last comment came in.

At 2:23 PM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Ok,maybe some of you that are hip to internet id addresses can help me with this:

The message above supposedly from "James" has, in the header of the e-mail: xOriginating- IP: 64.233.184.240

The original message from Randy Cassingham has, in the header of the e-mail: xOriginating- IP:
64.233.184.250

They're almost exactly the same but running those IP addresses it shows the location is New York.

Am I using the wrong IP addresses? There's a number of them listed in the header, but the two above keep reappearing throughout the header.

At 2:32 PM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Then, the IP address my hit counter shows, that came from Denver at the time the comment was posted (actually sent for moderation) is 70.219.186 but when I run that one it shows it as being in Harbor City, CA. Is this like the Topix forums where they only show the home location of the service provider?

At 3:19 PM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

I think I'm following a false trail with the two different "e- mail address IP#s". Since those e-mails were comments forwarded to me from Google for moderating, I'm thinking the IP address is some Google server?

So, taking another look at my Sitemeter stats and keeping in mind the IP address supposedly from Denver came back as Harbor City, CA.; I see the Denver hit went straight to the Easy Elections thread, stayed 1min 54secs, and left on the Post a Comment page.

Also about that time- next entry to the Denver one- Sitemeter shows someone from Long Beach, CA showing up here. Isn't there a Harbor City in or around Long Beach?

The Long Beach fellow came from Leonidas' blog and left after viewing the comments. He spent a little more time than Denver but they were here at roughly the same time.

Can't help but wonder if that's just a coincidence with the Denver IP showing up as from Harbor City, or not. Could be two people working together on the same project.

But, seems to me that our infuriated friend James, who supposedly wrote that comment is very likely Randy Cassingham himself. Sure sounds like him.

Fred, these dudes or dude, sure make libertarianism seem quite authoritarian.I don't see how most libertarians would agree with the obey laws and the state or die attitude presented here.

At 9:24 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Yep, probably not. The more I look at James' comment, and taking into consideration Cassingham visited the blog at the time the comment was made, I think it's fairly obvious the two guys are one and the same, or, Cassingham enlisted the help of someone else to post the letter, but but did the writing himself.

The guy's a certifiable nut case.

Fred,
I have family in Long Beach that occasionally reads my blog. Email me the IP address And I can probably confirm or exclude it.
