HOPE Voter Guide

The Humboldt Organized for People and the Environment (HOPE) folks just released their voter guide. They do this every election to show what groups are supporting or opposing the different ballot initiatives.

They used to call me each year for the Libertarian Party recommendations but they haven't the last two times. Last time they left the LP recommendations blank. This year they didn't call me, either, but it looks like they took the LP of California recommendations from the LPC web site.

Hope the web page I put up works. I couldn't find the voter guide online anywhere so I had to figure how to make it available to everyone. It came as a .pdf file and I tried saving and uploading that to my server but that didn't work out after numerous tries.

What ended up working (at least I can see it), was copying the .pdf file and pasting it on to a blank web page. It pasted as an image and seems to work ok, at least for me.

That is a handy guide. I printed a copy, so when I sit down with my permanent abstentee ballot, I can refer to it.

Fred:

Did you watch last night's State Assembly candidate debate between Wes Chesbro and Jim Pell? Pell said he is in favor of Prop 8. He said something to the effect we need to protect America's cultural/religious traditions and Prop 8 will do that.

That's not an exact quote. It's a brief summary of like a minute-long explanation of why he thinks Prop 8 is a good idea.

Do you still support him?

Reluctantly. His opponent, Chesbro, is worse.

No surprise about Pell's support for Prop 8. An anti- homo attitude seems to be the litmus test for Republican candidates up here. I figured Pell likely supported 8 when I first heard of him.

I remember when the Reps actually ran a pretty decent candidate a few years ago, Rob Brown. Of course, a few weeks before the election the Reps had to throw a bone to the Religious Right and they made sure everybody knows that Brown supported Prop 22, the anti- homo initiative that passed earlier on. Not sure how strongly Brown supported 22, but he had to come out publicly for it to get full support from his party.

Doesn't really matter. We need to remember that Pell, even if actually elected, will be a member of the minority party in Sacramento and that's unlikely to change. His feelings toward prop 8 will be irrelevant as the Republicans have no power in the assembly except during budget negotiations.

Fred:

You pulled your support for Polly Endert when she said she supported the smoking ban on the boardwalk.

But you still support Pell, you say, even though he has said he supports Proposition 8.

You have to admit, this inconsistency makes it appear that protecting a smoker's right to spread second-hand smoke to non-smokers' lungs is a higher priority for you than protecting the right of people to marry who they want to marry.

Yep. Looks like that, except Pell won't be able to do anything in regards Prop 8. He's in a minority party.

Polly will still have her power, although she doesn't have that much. She didn't sponsor the smoking ban. Glass did. She just went along with everyone else, although her praise for the smoking ban during the forum was over the top.

Besides, I just removed Polly's sign from my lawn and put it across the street in the Matteoli's yard. I'll likely still vote for her. Better to have someone that might just vote for another smoking ban that one who will not only vote for a smoking ban but try to raise Eureka's minimum wage as well as Polly's opponent will.

I can vote for the lesser of two evils as easily as the next guy.

Fair enough, Fred. I don't totally agree with your reasoning, but I respect your opinion. Thank you for addressing it.

I might add that there is slim chance, if any, of Jim Pell beating Chesbro, so you've nothing to worry about.

It would be nice to see it be a close race, though, but I won't even hold out hope for that.

One error — Planned Parenthood has no position on 9.

Fred,
Voting NO on everything across the board is not a bad idea. I would no sooner use a party line (anyone's party line)to vote than fly to the moon. Not to say I am leaning toward a Libertarian point of view...but......

Send a message! Vote Independent!
