More Bad News

Election day and the day after are nearly always full of bad news for libertarians. This election was no different. But it gets even worse, as the Sacramento Bee's, Dan Weintraub, points out.

According to Dan, California is just about in as bad of shape as it was during the Great Depression and it looks like revenues might drop even further.

We are in trouble. Not only were a couple additional bond issues passed (one commenter to the Bee notes that the cost of servicing existing state bonds is almost equal to our current operating budget), we also re- elected at least one state legislator, Wes Chesbro, that helped us get to where the state is today.

To those of you that voted for the bond measures, thanks for nothing. For those that voted for Chesbro, thanks for nothing. For those that voted for both, thanks for nothing twice. I can't help but believe you'll vote exactly the same way next time around.

I lost on every proposition,House of Reps,State Assembly,President,Water Board....but well,I didn't take a stand on 5,9,or 11.But at least McCain lost,so well,that could be a step in the right direction,and F and J passed with flying colors,which is great.

Depressed maybe. I would think most libertarians always are after an election. Bad things happen during elections.

It looks like Prop 11 won. We'll see what that does to the Dems' stranglehold on our district's state positions.

I voted for Prop 11 but, as I said earlier on, I don't expect much to change in regards the issue.

Fred, you still haven't explained how you feel Chesbro is responsible for the state's fiscal problems. Your statements to that effect are empty without specifics, facts.

Yes, I did. He was one of the many who helped put together and passed the 2000/2001 budget. That's the one where the state had more money that it ever dreamed of. They spent every penny of it and more. If they'd only increased spending to account for inflation and population growth, I've been told they would have had billions of dollars in surplus.

As it was, once the dotcom bubble burst, we ended up deeply in debt.

Certainly he wasn't the only one, but he was a sitting state senator at the time.

I might also add, as I've mentioned here before, that the 2000/2001 budget was the last time a budget was actually passed on time in this state.

Now go ahead and start your did not, did not, did not... reply like was done last time. It would be better if you could show us how fiscally responsible Chesbro is.

How can you be pro gay marriage but anti-recruiter? Seems really intellectually dishonest--aren't we for the entire Bill of Rights?

I'm sad that 8 passed, but also annoyed that F & J passed.

Am I really the only one who sees the contradiction here? Free speech is for the people we hate, not the ones we agree with.

Free association and equality--for gays but not the miltary?

Did you vote against parental notification for abortion but for F & J? Teens can make the decision to terminate a pregnancy without parental knowledge but can't even talk to a recruiter without Mom or Dad?

I can respect consistency I disagree with, but this "I like it so it's good and I hate it so it's bad" mentality sucks--whether I like your politics or not.

Still empty of facts, Fred. Just generic rhetoric. I guess that's the best we can expect from you.

Cheesebro was at the helm of Ca. budget. He will fit right in with the new Obama social structure. Don't worry be happy. Wes and Barack have a job---well sort of--spend,spend,spend/tax,tax,tax.

Fred, what is the music that is playing?

The Soviet Red Army Choir?

"Still empty of facts, Fred. Just generic rhetoric.".

No matter what I say, that's what you'll say. Can you give me some example of Chesbro demonstrating fiscal responsibility (other than proposing raising taxes)?

Oh, I believe he's also always rated an F by the gun groups. I'll have to see if there's any taxpayer groups that have given him ratings.

Fred, are you blaming Chesbro for not forseeing the Dot Com crash?

At 11:53 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Sure. I saw it coming. I believe a handful of Republicans in the state legislature back then warned of the same thing. Apparently Chesbro, and most of the rest, just brushed it off.

Fred, did you ever see The Grapes of Wrath? California was the place to be during the great depression.

Lets be honest about Libertarians, they win few elections because they promise little. Little taxes, little help, little government. Many people want something for nothing and the Libertarian platform doesn't speech to them.
