A Boycott I Can Support

The Marijuana Policy Project is encouraging people to boycott the Kellogg's Company for the silly action they took in regards Olympic swim champion Michael Phelps having been supposedly caught on film smoking pot. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I've sent my letter to Kellog's using MPP's action center. I encourage all of you to do the same and go ahead and actually boycott Kellog's products, too. That's easy for me to say and do since I don't buy Kellog's products anyway.

Here's MPP's action alert:

Dear Fred Mangels:

As you probably know, cereal giant Kellogg's has announced that it won't renew Olympic swim champion Michael Phelps' endorsement contract because he was photographed smoking marijuana.

If Phelps had been photographed hoisting a Budweiser, no one would have said a word. In fact, Phelps was arrested for drunk driving in 2004 — which could have resulted in someone being hurt or killed — and Kellogg's never took issue with that. Alcohol is far more toxic and addictive than marijuana and tends to make users reckless, aggressive, and violent.

Would you take a minute to speak out against this hypocrisy, by adding your voice to the hundreds of thousands of people who are pledging to boycott Kellogg's products until the company changes its decision? Just visit MPP's action center here and fill out the easy online form.

Meanwhile, MPP has been all over the news to point out the hypocrisy of the situation.
For instance, check out this video of MPP's Bruce Mirken discussing the issue on CNN last week.

Please join me in rejecting the farce of the condemnation of marijuana users — one that has already long been abandoned by the general public.

Sincerely,
Kampia signature (e-mail sized)

I totally disagree with you on this one. Kellogg's markets to kids. This was an unfortunate thing for Phelps, but given who they were marketing to, it was a smart move by Kellogg.

As for the MJ folks, doing shit like this doesn't make me lean towards their issue at all. Like hitting off of the bong at the party was medicinal?

Well, seems to me we're now in an time where a lot of those kids Kellog's sells stuff to already smoke pot. Never mind our past three presidents that seem to have used drugs in the past and the current mayor of New York who admitted he's smoked pot and enjoyed it.

Kellog's reaction is hysterical, as far as I'm concerned.

Most all the population see pot smoking as something a role model shouldn't be associated with.

And if someone has done it, its considered shameful and needing an apology.

Some public figures acknowledge having used drugs. But they also didn't continue doing it and regret having done it.

The public knows that ongoing pot smokers are losers and have no respect for them.

Kellogs reaction is NORMAL, Fred, as opposed to NORML.

That was one very expensive bong hit. Probably ought to get Phelps in the Guinness Book or World Records (again).

It's kinda sad when you think about hte enormous discipline he is capable of, we shouldn't fault him for being human.

On the other hand, he knows better than any of us the value of his lungs. Smoking, of any kind, is violating the temple.

So what. The potheads will get stoned and forget about their big boycott or get the munchies and chow down on a bunch of Frosted Flakes. Idiots.

You're saying George Bush's drug use and subsequent failure as President is a GOOD REASON to approve marijuana use?

2 + 2 = ?

His pot use was the least of his problems. He should've spent more time puffing on it.

If it's a kid thing then why don't you hypocrites take a good look at your TV or take a look at billboards kids see while in the back seat going down the road regarding Amhaeuser - Busch or some drug company pushing alcohol or drugs . Kids see that & you say nothing yet , these drugs will kill you or cause you to kill others . They can cause irreversible harm to the human body . Marijuana does none of these things . At least , Michael didn't push his marijuana on TV.
Kellogs owes , Michael an aplogy for something that hurts no one , not even himself .

Rose , your not a POT smoker . If you were you would know that marijuana can be smoked using a vaporiser which causes no smoke to get to the lungs . There has been NO evidence that marijuana causes any damage to the human body which includes the lungs . Unlike the booze and presciption drugs you take so , don't tell us about any dangers associated with marijuana unless you know the facts .I can tell you though there are many dangers associated with alcohol and prescription drugs .
