Cleaning Up Marriage

In honor of Freeman and Teresa Blake's letter against same- sex marriage in today's Times- Standard:

One of the Topix comments suggested working to end marriages of other groups not deserving of it would make more sense than fighting for marriage equality. Maybe we should start with something along the lines of what's they're working on in Minnesota?

Hat tip to CLS over at the Classically Liberal blog for the heads up on the video.

They'll come for the atheists next. After all, in their view marriage is pure nationalism, the fusion of religious covenant and government sanction, and non-believers are unworthy.

Either rename legally recognized unions to a name other than marriage, or leave us the hell alone.

I'm almost of the same view.

I keep hearing from the religious folks that marriage is a God thing. If so, government shouldn't be involved in it at all.

They probably should rename all marriages, since government is involved. Even people married in churches have to get marriage licenses, don't they? We should call them civil unions or contracts, since the church folk thinks marriage is a God thing.

Then again, if we did that, they'd claim we're destroying marriage again, wouldn't they?

So, why don't we compromise and be willing to call a civil union license a marriage license? But the government should recognize civil unions of any willing couple, not just those married in churches.

Hey, a compromise so everybody is happy.

If marriage is just for pro-creation (along the lines of the Blakes' letter in the Times-Standard), logic would merit a fertility test for all marriage license applicants. Also - women past menopause would not be eligible to get married.

I disagree. Almost half of married people have children. Therefore, almost a majority of all marriage in the US is somewhat for procreation. If they started letting gay people marry, the childless married stat would jump from 51% to 52% or some other terribly non-procreative number. Considering a full 20% of kids live in a single parent household, society needs to be helping out single parents instill core family values in children such as homophobia.
