Smoke Detectors

Just noticed our two smoke detectors in the house stopped working. Time for new ones.

I'm also wanting to do something I've been thinking about for some time now: I want to put at least one smoke detector out in the garage. Problem is, I likely wouldn't be able to hear it if it went off while I was in the house. So, I need a detector out there that has an alarm speaker that I can put inside the house.

Anyone know of any companies that make smoke detectors like that? I was looking online yesterday and the only thing I found was a wireless smoke detector but it costs just under $300.00. Surely some company must make a detector that has a remote alarm that's affordable?

If you don't mind a little homemade hookup..Buy 2 regular smoke detectors. Mount one in your garage and the other in the house where you want to be able to hear the garage alarm. Run stereo speaker wire from the speaker connection in the alarm unit in the garage to the speaker in the alarm unit in the house. When the alarm is activated in the garage it will sound through the unit in the house. Kind of Rube Goldberg but way cheaper than fancier alternatives.

Thanks. I might end up having to try something like that.

One thing about having a smoke detector in the kitchen, which is right next to the garage, is that it goes off all the time when cooking. I saw one when I was looking around yesterday, though, that you could turn on or off with a TV remote control. So, you could always turn it off when cooking and turn it on when you're done.

I read the first entry above. I'll admit I didn't understand the technical details. Even so, I couldn't help but think that trying to go cheap on life-saving equipment might not be the best decision. You know, like using off-brand batteries in a smoke detector.

I'll suggest you put a smoke detector in your garage and keep some windows open between the garage and your house.

Or another idea, you could buy a baby - minder and put it in the garage. Then if the smoke detector goes off in the garage, and if you have the baby-minder set on high volume, with fresh batteries all around, you should hear the garage smoke detector OK.

Unless, of course, you are hearing-impaired.

Good Luck, Fred!

Boy Oh Boy, that is exactly what I need for my hallway, which is by my kitchen.

Where can I find a smoke detector I can switch off with a TV remote control?

I use these
http://www.amazon.com/First-Alert-SA302CN-Double-Battery-Powered/dp/B000066OC9

Loud enough to hear through walls. Remote control mute. Cheap. All the good things.
