Hacker With An Arcata Past?

Anyone ever met Adrian Lamo? He's the guy that supposedly hacked the New York Times computer network and, more recently, turned in a U.S. soldier leaking classified information.

Near the end of this Sacramento Bee story, it says the only newspaper he reads online regularly is the Arcata Eye. I can't imagine why he'd be interested in the Eye if he hadn't spent some time up here.

Maybe, but I can't imagine myself regularly reading the police logs from some obscure place like Alexandria, Nebraska, even if they were as fun as the Arcata Eyes'. I'd need to have some connection to the place for it to interest me.

There are a lot of Arcata expatriates. Also, some people who don't or have never lived here have a fascination with Arcata either as some sort of Ecotopia or a commie dystopia. Arcata is a shapeshifting tabula rasa onto which people project all their wonderful political and cultural theories and then go, "A-ha! See?"

It's sort of like reading The Onion every week. You bookmark it and check it now and then... no deep familiarity required so long as it keeps you smiling.
