Libya
I don't normally comment on international issues here if only because there's more than enough people doing that. I've made a few comments regarding Egypt on at least one other blog. I'll mention Libya here if only because of this Reason Magazine commentary that pretty much echoes my feelings. Something not often brought up in much of the discussion I've seen in the blogs.
Anyway, great minds often think alike. An excerpt from the Reason commentary:
"Do we even know that the insurgency we propel to victory will be successful in liberalizing Libya? Foreign policy is infested with black swans. When The New York Times asked Paul Sullivan, a Libya expert at Georgetown University, what we should expect, he answered: "It is a very important question that is terribly near impossible to answer. It could be a very big surprise when Gadhafi leaves and we find out who we are really dealing with." Comforting, no?".
Yep. We may end up finding out we backed the wrong horse. Remember Russian occupied Afghanistan? After this first round of this Libya conflict is over, we may find the new folks in power are as bad or worse than the current regime.

It couldn't go any worse than Iraq and Afghanistan. At least we don't have ground forces there.
Regardless of the party affiliations the people filling suits in Congress and the White House, the US is a global military empire and will continue to act like one.

I saw an article the other day featuring Bill Kristol, of the Project for a New American Century, insisting we place troops on the ground in Libya ASAP.
Keep in mind both Iraq and Afghanistan are costing us billions each day with no end in sight.
Now we've added Libya to the mix.
Fred, we have a military economy. If we don't use the weapons, we don't need more, we don't buy more, and our economy gets worse. I know you're Libtertarian, but you usually side with Republicans. You should sit down, shut up and be happy a Democrat ignored his base and started another war. It's patriotic. Wave your flag. Don't burn it.
Half a billion dollars has been spent on Libya in one week. That money could be better used creating jobs here at home making something besides weapons.
Add mine to that great list of minds that think alike.
I remember when the US backed Fidel Castro and Che Geuvara to overthrow Batista. They told us that they were trying to form a "Democracy" with free elections. What really happened is Castro invited Russia to set up a nuclear missile base aimed at the US, and put us one red button push away from nuclear war. Kennedy backed Russia down and forced them out of the western hemisphere. If Russia hadn't blinked first, this would be a much different world today.
Remember the Ayatollah Khomeini? He deceived Regan into supplying him weapons by pretending to be friendly to the west.

"back Castro"?
Kruchev did NOT "blink". He got JFK to remove intermediate range missiles (the same kind he had in Cuba) from Turkey.
Iran received weapons and spare parts for its air force from the US as ransom for Western hostages (not from the US Embassy) and agreed to "share" some of the weapons with the Nicaraguan Contras.
As for choosing "friends" in Libya; we don't have any.
God bless the troops and there mission. We can be proud that our nation is liberating a land where Jesus preached the good word. It has now been taken over by those who worship a false idol, having been deceived.
