Near Record Chinook Run On Russian River

The Santa Rosa Press- Democrat reports on what seems to be a near record run of chinook salmon in the Russian River. They even mention how the local water authority uses information on salmon numbers to manage water releases from Lakes Mendocino and Sonoma, something they couldn't do without the dams in place as I brought up here not long ago.

Am I great, or what?

Too bad that's all water that should be left in the Eel...Damn dams! Fred, have you seen the video of the Condit Dam (White Salmon River) removal from yesterday? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9cudp1eCdc
Pretty impressive.

Water diversions are certainly a related issue.

As the article states, they have only been keeping records for 12 years. Record keeping began because the salmon in the Russian are on the brink of extinction. It is good news that this year there is a relatively high number of fall run chinook salmon returning to the Russian, in the context of this 12 years of record keeping on an endangered species. But in relation to the original abundance of salmon, and the diversity of species and runs, this years "near record numbers" are still abysmally low. There is a lot of work still to be done, dams to be removed, habitat restored, and agricultural and timber harvest practices to be improved, and consciousnesses to be raised.
