OH, NO!!!

We're doomed! The universe might tear itself apart. At least we still have some time left.

The Big Rip is still speculation with critics. There are many hypotheses about how the universe will end. I09 isn't the place I'd turn to for science news.

Lawrence Krauss has some interesting observations about the end of the universe that don't require speculation, because they are testable (and are being tested). Long story short, we likely live in a flat universe that is expanding (moving galaxies away from each other) at faster than the speed of light. A sentient species that develops the scientific method and comes to understand everything we have, and more, about the universe is likely to be wrong about one big thing. They will view the universe as static, as containing their one galaxy surrounded by nothing because the rest of the galaxies will no longer be observable.

Perhaps by the time our universe is about to end we will have figured out how to travel to one of the "multi-verses" I hear so much about. ------ But the trouble with all these scare stories is that they neglect consciousness: a force unaccounted for by physics (although quantum mechanics pays lip service to it). As Emily Dickinson wrote: "The Brain - is wider than the Sky -/For - put them side by side -/The one the other will contain/With ease - and You beside -" (the brain = consciousness).

Physics hasn't figured out consciousness because consciousness is a matter for a biologist, neurologist and other scientific fields. As for it being "unaccounted for," you'll have to explain what you mean because human consciousness is pretty well understood.
