Killer Whales Offshore Humboldt Bay

I must have missed it if any local media reported on this. The Del Norte Triplicate reports on some guys that followed a pod of the whales down to Humboldt Bay and witnessed one eating salmon.

The rumor I heard yesterday was that a killer whale breached at a local beach and grabbed a seal (from land), and there was a infant killer whale near the parent. And that this is supposedly the first time such behavior has been witnessed in North America.

I've seen video of them doing that on TV before, but don't know where it was filmed.

According to the Triplicate story, those guys were saying that killer whales can be broken into 3 categories: seal eaters, fish eaters and shark eaters. Never heard that before and doesn't really make sense to me. Seems to me they'd eat whatever was available.

And, according to the story, they saw a fish eating salmon, which would mean they wouldn't eat seals. Who knows?

The orcas pass by every year. We were out salmon fishing a few years ago and saw them hunting. The land grab was also a few years ago in Indian cove.....I did not witness that or speak to anyone who did, so who knows.

It's not a rumor, just old news.

It's been seen in North America before, just not that far south.

I talked to the person, and he insists it occurred on Saturday. If so, it's simply not the first time it's happened in North America, but also isn't regurgitated old news.
