Eureka Seniors Downtrodden?

Pretty shameless guest opinion in the Times- Standard this morning from a gal(?) who doesn't think she gets the right kind government assistance. She complains about living in public housing and of landlords not accepting her because she's with Section 8. Not sure of the specifics of Section 8, but it's some government housing assistance thing.

She never mentions MediCare, social security, the Senior Center, Meals on Wheels or any of the other things old folks get. I'd suggest to her she not be looking gift horses in the mouth. I've used various forms of government assistance in my life, too. I don't believe I've ever complained because I didn't get enough.

Also, for what it's worth, pretty much all the seniors I know, maybe even myself(?), seem to be doing ok.

Speak for yourself, Fred. Try organizing a multi-billion dollar inter-tribal lottery project while facing a third eviction notice for my 215 medical marijuana usage here in my HUD rent subsidized apt. It's so ironic but unfortunately very true for me that while it's taken 19 years for this project to get some legs and potential compensation for my years of work, the reality is it's not here and won't be for awhile and I'm going under financially and facing real homelessness--my backup housing in G'ville also went anti-215 medical marijuana and I was bumped off the top of the waiting list there. So, no, from my perspective, seniors aren't doing so well. Our medical benefits keep being taken away and now medical rights for 215 patients.

So let me get this straight.

1)People I know are doing fine.

2) Someone I don't know writes about not doing OK.

Conclusion: She is shameless to complain. She is already obviously getting help, who is she to ask for more. I never did.

Don't you think you are self-selecting against knowing anyone who needs help? In other words, you are obviously going to harshly judge others that might need help, how many of the people you know are going to reach out to you to let them know they may not be "doing ok". If I was a friend of yours and "not doin' OK" you probably wouldn't be the one I told.

And btw, it's not like she is asking for things that are outrageous. Safer streets, affordable rents, a little more attention and thought given to seniors. Seems quite reasonable to me and most definitely not "shameless".

I would hope someone on the public dole would have enough pride or self respect to appreciate what they have and not complain they're not getting what they want.

I consider it shameless if only because I like to think I haven't done the same thing and that I never would.

You must be living in an alternate universe, Fred. It is impossible to exaggerate the problems of the non-rich aged, especially in this county. PS Social Security is not "the dole".

"PS Social Security is not 'the dole'."

It is to people like Fred. Can you imagine a corrupt DA prosecuting you for serious crime you did NOT commit and Fred on the jury?

Their problems aren't much different than the non- rich young. I wasn't always able to move wherever I want, either. I'm still not. The point is, seniors have all sorts of assistance. They're better taken care of than the young.

this is a hard one on one hand it's almost impossible to save up enough money to retire in this day in age on the other hand if you're receiving benefits paid for by somebody else you really shouldn't b**** about them.
on a side note I love the cometer that thinks I should pay so he can smoke dope all day if people were as worried about what's going on with our government or finding a decent job to make a good living as they were about smoking dope all day the country might be in better shape I think that's why we're seeing a nationwide push to legalize marijuana the government knows people would be too happy to sit home and smoke dope and eat Fritos all day and on top of it they will be able to collect taxes on it not that I think any drugs should be legal but I think the medical value of marijuana is way over hyped it's been proven that smoking marijuana really isn't that good for you in fact it has more cancer causing chemicals then cigarettes smoke does and about the only medical benefit is an increase in appetite and the perception of pain reduction if you truly wanted to use it as a medicine you would juice it that has been proven to fight all kinds of cancers and is a good source of vitamins minerals and protein.

51 years with marijuana as my drug of choice and still going strong at 70, interacting with heads of tribes and corporate execs, and even Google techies in their 20's and having no trouble keeping up with the latest science. The comment posted above mine reflects pure government cigarette company propaganda bombarded on U.S. citizens since the '30's Reefer Madness..

sorry to burst your bubble but independent research has proven that raw marijuana has more carcinogens in it then raw tobacco although to be fair you cannot compare marijuana to cigarettes because cigarettes have a lot of added chemicals to make them burn slower and more evenly although marijuana does have a lot more beneficial properties then tobacco if you're going to be a mouth piece for smoking marijuana you should really bone up on the most recent research I know several people that smoke two plus packs of cigarettes a day for the last 30 years and haven't developed cancer so using the fact that you smoke marijuana for a number of years and haven't been diagnosed with cancer as proof that it will not cause cancer is just asinine whatever the argument I doubt you can seriously say that smoking anything is healthy for you but it has been extensively proven that ingesting marijuana by eating it is very very beneficial for you in many ways and just so you know I smoke pot too but it is not my Lord and Savior and I do realize it has negative health effects on me and I don't smoke it because I think it's the cure all I smoke it because I like to tune out in the evenings when all my responsibilities or met

if you are so good at what you do then why are you having trouble finding housing if you're really on par with execs of big corporations and Google heads shouldn't you be rolling in dough I'm a simple carpenter and I'm able to make enough money to provide housing for me my two daughters and my wife without any assistance from the government or tax paying citizens..

Anons, what is your problems? You guys are not me and so your reactions to pot usage aren't applicable to anyone other than yourselves. I post my own life experience with pot which counters the anti-pot propaganda as far as I'm concerned.

And I'm sorry that the carpenter making a living can't understand that at 70 he might be singing a different tune after medical bills have eaten up all his savings as it does so many who think they are invulnerable to reversals of fate. I worked as an in-home caregiver for a man who had formerly run several companies and used to be a multi-millionaire--until his accident laid him up as a parapalegic and doctors and healthcare took all his money away. As it does everyone's outside the 2%. If you can't see that coming, I have and warn you that no, in our society, making a living at one point in your life is no guarantee at all it will cover you in your old age.

And for the record, as a complete pot addict most of my adult life and happy as can be with that fact, I feel have contributed enough over my lifetime to my community and to humanity in general to laugh at any attempt to link pot and loss of constructive activity.

if you're so happy with your life why do you complain so much. but if you're happy I'm happy for you and don't worry about that healthcare thing Obama gave us all free healthcare remember;-) and in all seriousness if you want to sit around and medicate yourself all day long that's fine with me just don't expect me to subsidize your income so you can do it I hope since you work hard your whole life and I'm sure paid into Social Security you're at least get enough back to live on and you should enjoy that while it lasts because when I come to retirement age Social Security will be insolvent and there won't be any left for me because the government spend the years of surplus on the Ponzi scheme that is our government instead of reinvesting back in to Social Security benefits. I guess my underlying issue is really a separate matter its just in the last 20 years or so I've seen so many people young people an old piss there life away smoking dope thinking its some kind of cure all medicine and then because of lack of ambition having not made anything of their life they expect me and other people that have to pay for their way of living this has become a dangerous epidemic in this country and is already sinking us financially its just simply unsustainable so I guess when I read your comment talking about being kicked out of your assisted living because you can't grow dope it kinda struck a nerve

OK, you see potheads in the stereotypical way, the way the gov't and liquor and cigarette industries have always promoted in order to keep pot competition away from consumers who will in the end choose the world's mildest intoxicant and despite what you say, a general panacea medicine good for all kinds of ailments including cancer. I too, react emotionally when I hear propaganda being spouted instead of rational argument. Yes, teenagers shouldn't mess with pot--it's not good for their brains just like alcohol isn't good either or any psychoactive drug on developing bodies and brains. But once adults, well, there's just no medical reason for prohibiting pot and frankly, most potheads will agree with medical science, compared to other drug use pot is not really an issue for adults.

You may follow my adventures as a pothead community organizer as hopefully our wonderful economic revival project for Humboldt County, (remember potheads dreamed this up and worked on it on and off for the last 19 years) will be in the news in the coming months. But then this could just be another pothead pipe dream. Me, I trust Divine Intervention as She makes sure Her sacrament gets spread around the world to get the world off of alcohol, heroin, cocaine, speed and gun addictions.

you must understand when I refer to dope I am referring to all drugs weather its alcohol prescription illegal or otherwise you understand that American is the most medicated society in the world with that being said marijuana is certainly one of the most benign but it is still a drug and it still had adverse effects on one's motivation and synapses and all the miraculous benefits that you talk about is from ingesting the plant not smoking it that is my argument and I just see it as a measure of control to keep us unmotivated and unorganized so that we cannot fight back to peacefully take back or democratic republic from the corporations that have taken control of it.

I have never watched reefer madness and never intend to I understand the propaganda I also understand seeing dope heads on the street with my own two eyes everyday I go to Garberville or Redway you can say I'm stereotypic but this is something I've seen with my own two eyes and it can be anything from the drooling heroin addict begging for money on the corner to the stoned out college student that doesn't even understand the world revolves around the sun. but perhaps I'm just naive maybe this has always been the case but studies and statistics seems to be conclusive that it's getting worse by the way I do not smoke cigarettes and I gave up drinking over a year ago
