Sticking With Windows XP?

Some of you might have heard that Microsoft is dropping support for its Windows XP operating system in April. They're recommending users upgrade to a more current operating system. Gee, who'da thunk?

XP works fine for me and I don't want to venture into the mess that newer operating systems involve. Never mind I have some incompatibilities on my current system with the newer versions. My screen resolution, for instance. I downloaded a compatibility program and says I need a different screen resolution. Problem is, my screen settings says this is the highest I can go. Is that a monitor thing? Would I need a different monitor?

Nope. I ain't gonna do it! I'll be one of the holdouts and will be sticking with XP for at least another year, unless unforeseen circumstances develop. Will you be upgrading?

Will you be leaving behind Windows XP next month?

Support for Microsoft Security Essentials (the free anti-virus/anti-malware program) will continue for another year.

So, there's really no reason to upgrade until next year.

I believe Avast firewall and anti- virus will still work with XP, too. I read something yesterday in some news article where one "expert" was saying there shouldn't be any problem for at least a year or so. The others- all whom seemed to be Microsoft guys- where predicting all sorts of problems for those who didn't upgrade. I ain't gonna do it!

It's not the program compatibility that is the issue, everything that works with XP now should keep working. The problem is they will no longer release security updates for XP, so you are at risk of being hacked a lot easier after the deadline.
Personally I hated to see XP discontinued, but I was lucky enough to get a computer with Win 7 instead of Win 8. If you can find one of those then you will be better off than sticking with XP and or getting Win 8.

Windows 7 is wonderful.

Can you still buy copies of Windows 7?

My husband researched a new computer for me, and ended up getting a Gateway, with Windows 7 installed in it. The answer to your question is "yes".

P.S. to my previous comment: We were replacing a 9-year-old computer that ran on the XP operating system. You may need to replace your computer with one installed with Windows 7.

I a retired old fart who has taken up computers as a hobby to keep brain cells busy. I'm told that, if they get bored, they self-destruct. I am self-taught and I am currently running 14 computers in a "Dropbox" network. Two are Macs. Of the remaining 12, one runs Win7 (64bit) and another is an XP machine that can dual-boot into Win7 (32 bit) if it feels the urge. That leaves 10 XP machines that I have no intention of upgrading. I don't like Win7, they disabled Outlook Express, don't let you run DOS, and added a message system that harasses and demeans you. I don't like MSE based on the notion that any program that can't uninstall itself should not be installed in the first place. Also MSE "phones home" each morning to see if MSFT still likes your serial number. For security, I use a third-party firewall, a free virus checker and run Housecall periodically. My Firefox browser uses Keyscrambler, HTTPS Anywhere, Ghostery, and Disconnect. I also have a VPN account (PIA) when traveling. For suspicious email attachments, I deploy private proprietary bioware (me!) to analyze before opening. I have Sandboxie for testing, if needed. All the "experts" say I am crazy. Thing is, I stopped the security updates in XP years ago ANYWAY after a bad update trashed my system, and yet I have never been infected, although online for hours each day. So, crazy though I be, I am sticking with XP.
