Healdsburg Puts Fluoridation on Ballot

The Santa Rosa Press- Democrat reports the Healdsburg City Council has agreed to put the city's 60 year old practice of water fluoridation on the ballot in November. Some on the city council feel the city should provide an argument for continuing the practice. There seems to be more than enough residents opposed to provide the argument against.

A question: Should the city provide the argument in favor of fluoridation if there aren't any residents willing to get together and make an argument of their own? Maybe so. Nice to have two sides presented, but something about the city making the argument rubs me the wrong way.

This will be interesting depending on the outcome. I'll be happy if the anti- fluoride forces prevail, but what exactly would that mean? Is it a victory for individual choice, the supposed science being touted against fluoridation, or both?

It is illegal for a doctor or a dentist to force anyone to take a drug or a chemical.
It should be illegal for the government as well. Fluoride should not be added to drinking water, which forces everyone to consume it against their will.

Agreed. Water should be water, not a medical treatment. Why stop at flouride. If that's ok, what else could they cook up to put in the water. If poor kids get cavities, there are better ways to work with that problem.

Well what if I want chlorine out too? I want nothing added, just give it to me as it comes out of the river. I want nothing done to it.

And you know, I don't appreciate that sidewalks are made out of concrete. I don't like walking on concrete! They are forcing me to walk on concrete!

What about my individual rights?

And here I thought Kirk had some respect for individual choice. I guess not.

If you don't want chlorine in your water, it's a simple matter to let water sit in a container for a few hours to let the chlorine evaporate. Not so with fluoride. People shouldn't have to buy expensive water filters to get away from fluoride (and I'm not sure filters can remove commercial fluoride, although I read the reverse osmosis filters can).

If government is going to be in the water business- and I have no problem if it is- they should provide potable water, and that's it. They shouldn't medicate water any more than they should add flavoring to it should 50.5% of the people vote to make it taste like lemonade or coffee straight from the tap.

Anything special the consumer wants done to their water can be done by the consumers themselves, to their individual water supply.

The solution for the fluoridation issue is very simple.
SIMPLE SOLUTION:
1. Take the toxic waste fluoride chemical out of the drinking water.
2. It is still legal and available, so those who wish to take it can then put fluoride in their own glass of water (as much as they wish).
3. Leave the rest of us out of it, giving everyone the freedom of choice.
PROBLEM SOLVED.
