Those Annoying PG&E Commercials

The wife suggested last night that I should write a letter to the editor about those tiresome PG&E commercials on television. We've both gotten quite annoyed with them. After all, we don't have any choice but to buy power from PG&E, do we?

What's the point of paying thousands of dollars for commercials telling everyone how dedicated and happy your employers are when we have no choice but to deal with them. And those commercials are paid for out of our utility bills.

I can see the cable and satellite TV companies running commercials. They compete amongst themselves for our business. PG&E doesn't. It almost seems as if they're rubbing our noses in it by using our money to tell us how great they are.

I wonder how they feel about the solar industry?

PG&E was a big supporter of AB32, I've been told. That's the greenhouse gas law that's causing energy prices to go so high.

I used to like them until they went for mandatory "smart meters". Being concerned about EMF right outside my bedroom window I now pay $10 a month for the "privilege" of keeping my old analog meter. And just HOW a smart meter is supposed to save me money is beyond me. Extortion!

I believe that you can purchase power from other suppliers, one such is Green Mountain which specializes in renewable energy. When the power industry was deregulated around 2000 (hello Enron)the option for purchasing from other suppliers was begun.

You probably might still be able to do that in some areas. Not sure how that works now. It was a big thing a few years back.

I signed up for utility.com around then. You could buy electricity but not gas from them. Or was it the other way around? They claimed you'd be buying at a 10% discount from whatever PG&E was selling it for. I forget how many months I tried them but I paid attention and didn't find it any cheaper.

I even e-mailed them saying it looked like they sold for the same as PG&E. I got an e-mail back simply repeating that they gave a 10% discount.

Didn't last too long as they stopped doing business in California due to some regulatory issue. I ended up back with PG&E.

I don't have that big an issue with PG&E. Energy prices have gone up and will continue to in California, in large part because of AB32- the greenhouse gas law- which PG&E supported.

At the very least you should sign up for the CARE program for discounted utilities based on income.

We are signed up for that program, and the one with AT&T.

I've wondered the very same thing. My question: Am I paying for PG&E to tell me how wonderful they are? I would rather not.

Seems almost cavalier, if not arrogant, to me. They have money to throw around like that?

I never perceived the latest crap, I mean crop, of PG&E commercials as trying to drum up business but rather an attempt to spread the word that they hire minorities and females. "Look at us!! We are an equal opportunity employer!!" The only thing missing is an overly outward gay! Biggest waste of our rate payers' money. Someone at work told me that PG&E budgeted $10,000,000 for this promotion. Yep, a big waste of money.
