A large percentage of the costs of a packet of cigarettes in the US are taxes. Some of these taxes are punitive to try and force the smoker into quitting. If tobacco is as large as a threat to health as is claimed then cigarettes should not be sold or manufactured. Yet the states and the federal governments continue to allow sales because they enjoy the tax profit from their sale. They can't have it both ways...
As long as people feel they are being ripped off by state and federal governments through the use of taxes there will be a market for tax less cigarettes, i.e. black market.
Personally, I believe its an individual's right to choose whether or not they smoke and the use of all of these taxes infringes on that right.

So... Why did you quit? Health, taxes, or did you get tired of being shunned and ignored?
