Times- Standard Quitting Del Norte

The Del Norte Triplicate reports that Sunday will be the last delivery of the Times- Standard to Del Norte County. I guess I missed it when they scaled back delivery from daily to Sundays only. Now Sunday delivery will be no more.

I wonder what cutbacks we can expect for Humboldt in the near future?

Good question! I can't believe they're making money.

Yep. And the paper seems to be getting smaller and smaller over time.

I suspect it's more a result of the corporate mothership than local influences, although as the paper is forced to cut back, surely it becomes increasingly harder to sell advertising.

I predict the paper will close within 5 years and be replaced with a weekly newspaper covering only Eureka, maybe with a news sharing relationship with the Mad River Union.

I used to work for the T-S for a number of years and at other print houses. T-S pulling back is extreme cost cutting by the parent company Media News Group. They've tried to squeeze every dollar possible out by constricting and consolidating papers under their umbrella, which is damn near every paper outside of Los Angeles it seems.

The only thing local about the T-S is the press and mailroom persons and some managers to signoff on pages, stories and lock the doors. Classifieds are handled by the Chico office when you call in. Artwork and ads are handled by a large agency in India...yes INDIA that does nothing but make ads for pennies for newspapers.

MNG did a great job at consolidation of papers and shutting them all down and lay off a few thousand employees. The only way for a paper to survive in Nor CA is to start an entirely new one.

The Triplicate in CC will get the business now, and probably survive better without the T-S. Most people are getting news online now, so print is all but dead.

I appreciate the Del Norte Triplicate but, just from what I read online, I'd hate that to be the only available newspaper.
