Eureka's Economic Development Commish Proposal

The Times- Standard reports on more feel good ideas from the Eureka City Council. This time it's creation of a commission to look at, and advise, on ideas for economic development.

I don't recall any efforts to make it easier and quicker to start up a business in Eureka. I can think of at least two businesses in Eureka that took two years to get started. I suspect that might be the norm. Have any of the powers- that- be in Eureka city government ever tried to get rid of some of the obstacles that hold up business in the first place? Not that I'm aware of.

I won't be surprised if this Economic Development Commission, if approved, ends up being a part of the problem rather than part of a solution.

How would you speed up the process Fred?

Take a look at why it takes so long for businesses to get started here and remove as many of those obstacles as possible.

The main obstacle to local businesses is lack of financing. It doesn't sound like the proposed Commission will have authority to do anything about that. If you want your business to open in a reasonable timeline you have to have a city council member in your corner.

I have heard bits and pieces over the years about someone in city government pulling some strings or helping out in some way to pave the way for a business to open. My question is why they'd have to pull those strings in the first place?

Time and again we hear city council candidates say they want to bring business to Eureka and make Eureka more business friendly. I'm not sure I've ever heard of any effort towards that, aside from talk.

Admittedly, this is a fairly anti- business environment to begin with, at least among some of the more vocal. Still, seems to me they could work to streamline the process and get obstacles out of the way for the entire city as opposed to someone who happens to know the right people.

In lieu of public dollars for the Chamber of Commerce, but without the brochures?

How would a City Council member help out specifically? Fast track what in particular?
