LInkedin, FB Friends, etc: Friend Requests

Just a short rant about something I've been annoyed with for some time. On all these social networks like Linkedin and Facebook you get these requests to be Friends or whatever. I don't believe they ever give a reason why you would want to add them. I don't know about Linkedin but Facebook doesn't have a space to add a reason.

Why would anyone, especially someone you don't otherwise know, expect you to just add them if they don't give you a reason or tell you who they are? Stupid.

Rant over.

It's like mass marketing. A 3% response rate is consdered "successful".

On Facebook, click the requester's name to view their full details. Someone trying to become your friend gives you access to see their posts, friends list, etc... personal information that might otherwise be private.

Most out-of-the-blue mystery friend requests are spammers and scammers trying to build up a list of friends so it looks like there's a real person behind the Facebook account. And, of course, once you're a friend, they can sometimes post spam to your wall or simply write posts on their own wall and have them show up in your fiend.

A not-so-quick test for spotting spammers is to grab their profile photo and then do a reverse image search on Google Images (and also tineye.com) to see where the photo really came from. If the photo is attributed to someone else's name, then bingo!

Way-back-when, Facebook would let you include a note about why you want to be a friend. Oh well.
