Casket Sales Expanding in Alabama Now

Reason magazine reports funeral directors have lost their monopoly on casket sales in Alabama. This the result of a lawsuit by the Institute For Justice. Most states have laws restricting who can sell caskets creating a monopoly and a financial hardship for those in the unfortunate position of having to buy one.

I'm not sure of the specifics of such laws in California, but we could do worse than do the same thing here. I doubt we'd see the Democrats in Sacramento interested in making that change, though. It would likely take another lawsuit.

If Costco sells caskets, then this isn't a problem in CA. Do a little research before you post - why post something you know nothing about????

Although I've never been involved in the cost or decision making process of funeral choices, I feel sad for those who have had to do so. At this time of grief, they should not be limited to expensive choices by funeral companies. Good for the state of Alabama, and the lady who lessened the burden on the poor, and the environmentally conscious. She's a hero.

So true and courageous.

It is disgusting that a law creates a monopoly as opposed to building bridges of opportunity for others because a law should be about minimum standards and the level of economic care being evaluated and practiced should only be based upon the standards.........like so many general contractors must meet standards, not a few who get all the business opportunities.

Now, time to de-monopolize American government because monopolies don't work for those who get little to zero benefits.

I misread your heading and thought it said the CASKETs were expanding. Those ol' boys in 'Bama do drink lots of beer.
