A Global Warming Defector

Hal Lewis, considered one of the top scientists at the University of California has resigned his position at least in large part by the corruption (his words) involved in what he calls the global warming scam:

" It is of course, the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist."

6 year old "news" that is refuted elsewhere.

"A physicist named Hal Lewis who doesn’t know the first thing about climate science has resigned from the American Physical Society because he doesn’t know the first thing about climate science."

Another way to put it is he's made a fool of himself, and is resigning in disgrace. History will decide which interpretation sticks. But unlike many cases, in which "history is written by the victors," in this case the judgement of history is going to be largely dependent on what actually happens, climate-wise.

For a high enough pay-out -- say a thousand dollars for every dollar I put up -- I'd put a few bucks on the proposition that the vast majority of the world's climate scientists are all dead wrong, and the relative handful of climate change deniers among them are actually right. Anything's possible.

And for an even higher payout -- perhaps a million to one -- I'd put a few bucks on the idea that all or most of the climate scientists who are warning of the dangers of anthropomorphic climate change are not just mistaken, but a-fakin.'

But for even money, I'm going with the overwhelming majority of scientific opinion.

One, he's a former physics professor. lol?

Two, response: https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/201011/memberresigns.cfm

FYI, this news is from 2010.

Fred, as soon as you read " (literally) trillions of dollars " warning sirens should have gone off between your ears.

Literally, truly, trillions of dollars. Trillions.

The entire budget for the Department of Energy is around $30 billion. One trillion dollars is more than 30 years of the DOE's budget. And he says literally trillions. Plural.

I think we can see that good old Hal is now past his "use by" date.

The teabagger ignorance on global warming is truely astounding

The way they collected the data, then drew their conclusions, has always been scrutinized & refuted. Many of the top scientists have refuted the methods used. Unfortunately, the scientists don't have the use of the taxpayers money to unscrew the people. It's the same with SHS & SHV.
I see GJ, the regulate & tax happy freak has joined the team of sock it to the people with carbon taxes. It's impossible to find a surprised face over this one.

Fred, You really do a disservice to yourself and your readers by fomenting this denier mentality. You cite a retired physics professor, and not a climate scientist by the way, who cites the so-called "climategate" as his reason for leaving the APS. No scientist worth his salt would take such a position simply based on a now-debunked scandal. Indeed, in 1992 he said the risk of global climate change was worthy of action. Additionally, he compares the Military Industrial Complex (what Eisenhower warned about) with research spending on climate science (the aforementioned "trillions" of dollars). Of course he doesn't mention the millions if not billions spent by the oil companies to throw shade at climate science without producing any real science. Finally, this is 6 years old and Dr. Lewis died in 2011, not long after writing this letter. He was at least 87 years old. Climate science has come a long way in the last 6 years. Countless more scientific papers have been published supporting anthropogenic climate change and still no science refuting it. Dr. Lewis, unfortunately, seems to have made a similar, if not more egregious mistake regarding climate science as he is accusing the APS of committing; that is committing scientific fraud.
