Humboldt Needs A Morning Commute Report

Just something fun that came to mind when we're staying at motels in the Bay Area. John Chiv's recent post about slow traffic reminded me of it: We usually wake up and turn on the TV to watch the Bay Area commute coverage. Station KRON has a news helicopter showing traffic on the freeway and lately they have coded digital maps of the freeways showing which ones are backed up and which ones are free flowing.

Why can't we have something like that up here? I realize KIEM-TV can't afford a helicopter, but maybe the Coast Guard would allow them to ride along and film the freeways?

KIEM reporter: We're over Highway 299 with the Coast Guard.  Highway 299 is clear all the way to Willow Creek with the exception of one car in the fast lane slowing everyone down up by Berry Summit.

The safety corridor between Eureka and Arcata has traffic running smooth except for a slow down at the Ryan Slough bridge as you enter Eureka from the north. Looks like a small traffic accident just to the south of the bridge. Commuters may want to take the Indianola or Bayside cutoffs to avoid that tie- up. Back to you at the station, Dave...

Wouldn't that be fun to watch each morning? It would give KIEM- TV more viewers and put them on par with he Bay Area stations

here's some webcams for Caltrans District 1:
http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist1/d1tmc/index.htm
Loco and (I think) RHBB have the scanners...
but it would take someone (or plural) to be the contact for that info.
I remember when everyone used CBs and other drivers provided the alerts.
LA has both Sigalert (private) and 511 (municipal).. with some areas in the county shown in a different site, different map.
Problem with the traffic coverage in a big city is it kinda makes you not want to get in a car...

Fred,

Cal Trans has cameras being ibstalled more and more.

Cal Trans has digital billboards being erected as HOJ pubescently writes this.....

Locals already know what the tradfic report tends to be in the safety corridor during the known rush hours.....outsiders wouldnt pay attention enough, given alternative routes for travelers is.......non existent......

Here is a list of needed projects Cal Trans turns a blind eye toward while it underdevelops yet again HWY 101....

1. Develop 6 lanes between South Fortuna and North McKinleyville.

2. Bypass Eureka

3. Replace 299/101 interchange with pedestrian access/crossing improvements for Valleywest/Valleyeast residents, users.....pop through behind Pacific Union School and MR Hospital + a route more south to subdivision at the intersection of "H" @ "Bottoms"(???).(where last years fire burnt down old asbestos filled store across from gas station)

If these projects were done NOW, driving in the greater humboldt bay area would be so pleasant all the time.....no backups, clogging, accidents are minimalized, road rage is lowered, economics is increased, transportation and delivery times reduced, carbon loads reduced on all the logjams, etc....

Plus, nothing needed to be improved ever again because hover crafts will take over......in other words,

6 lanes will serve the maximum loads this area should ever have.....and the current maxed out loads justify a major 6 lane project.

Charlie Fielder needs to do this NOW!

I agree with bypassing Eureka. With an offramp to Old Town for the tourists and what would be old 101 less congested, blight might actually be lessened.
